That’s A Rap #158: Rookies rule, Gary’s scary, and candy convos

For a team that has little-to-no championship aspirations, the Raptors have a number of young players that beg to differ.

Dalano & Barnes — the Toronto Raptors rookies, not the lawyers — have kicked off their inaugural campaigns in excellent fashion. They each bring an excitement to the floor that fans like us, who’re returning to Scotiabank Arena for the first time in almost two years, can really enjoy!

Gary Trent Jr. may be in his fourth season, but GTJ has been a scary proposition for every opposing guard so far.

Last week’s discussion about the NBA’s 75 Greatest pales in comparison to this week’s hot debate: Are Mike & Ike and Aero the worst Halloween candies?

Jason and I had a ghoulishly fun time recording on Halloween. Let us know your favourite (and least favourite) Halloween treats!

In This Episode:

4:10 — We Back (at least Jason and I were)

Whether it’s working as part of the Fan Patrol, or as media, or attending as a fan, there’s a special buzz that’s indescribable at Scotiabank Arena. It’s a feeling that’s been sorely missed for almost two years and, as the season wears on, more fans get to re-live the vibe of the NBA’s best homecourt advantage!

15:00 — Rooks impressing early

Regardless of the year or class, getting drafted #4 carries a lot of expectations. Suffice it to say, Scottie Barnes has lived up to — and exceeded — everyone’s expectations thus far. His game-changing play on both ends of the floor should be the talk of the town. Not to be outdone, Rexdale’s finest, Dalano Banton has crashed the rookie party and is making a name for himself.

29:10 — When deflecting is acceptable

Nick Nurse’s hyper aggressive defense has been his calling card since entering the league. Masai Ujiri and Bobby Webster made it a focus of emphasis to build a roster that fits Nurse’s system. At first glance, you wouldn’t expect Trent Jr. to fit the mold, but he’s been a defensive dynamo since the season tipped off. Paired with last year’s league leader in deflections per game, VanVleet, the duo is primed to wreak havoc on opposing guards all season long.

40:00 — The sweetest segment

We recorded on Halloween so it was only fitting that we discussed costumes, candies, and chocolates. Is there a costume you wish a certain Raptor would wear? What’s your favourite Halloween treat to steal from your kid’s bucket eat? Do you remember the best costume you’ve ever worn on Halloween? Share your thoughts (and maybe some Reese peanut butter cups too) below!
