The 905 will reportedly get their big man, and G-League Defensive Player of the Year, back to start the season.

The Raptors 905 got some good news today as according to Gigantes Del Basket, and later reported by Chris Reichert, Walter “Edy” Tavares will return to Mississauga and the G-League this season after being waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Last season with the 905, Tavares played in 48 games while starting 41 in the regular season and averaged 10.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks in just 23.6 minutes per game. Tavares was one of the 905’s best players last season and won the G-League Defensive Player of the Year, which was what earned him a spot on the Cavaliers in the first place.

In the NBA, Tavares played in one game with Cleveland before breaking his hand. He chipped in with six points and 10 rebounds in 24 minutes. However, Tavares was cut in training camp by the Cavaliers, and he now finds his way back to the G-League.

Having Tavares back in coach Jerry Stackhouse’s rotation will be huge for the 905, with most of the core players from their title-winning season gone. Tavares will undoubtedly step in as the 905’s starting centre once again, acting as a solid rim protector and defensive anchor.

Of course, like last season, it won’t be surprising if Tavares returns to the NBA again. He’s still a dominant 7’2” centre, and even in a league that is moving to smaller and more versatile players: you can’t teach height.
