As expected, the Raptors announced today that they've officially signed their two newest rookies, Jakob Poeltl and Pascal Siakam. Both players will be under contract until 2017-18, with two team option years after that carrying them (potentially) to 2019-2020.

As a refresher: Poeltl is a 7', 248 pound centre coming into the NBA after two seasons in Utah. He's also the first NBA player of Austrian descent. In his last collegiate season, Poeltl averaged 17.2 points and 9.1 rebounds. Last night, in his debut with the Raptors Summer League team, he showed flashes of his promise: great hands around the basket, good mobility for a guy his size, and a confidence that seemed to grow as the game went along. Poeltl's contract (according to Basketball Insiders) will pay him $2.25 million in the first year, though as is the standard, he'll likely sign for 120 percent of that value at $2.7 million.
Meanwhile, Siakam joins the team as a 6'9'', 230 pound forward with two seasons at New Mexico State under his belt. He averaged 20.3 points, 11.6 rebounds and 2.2 blocks last season for that squad. Last night in Vegas, Siakam put up an energetic 12 points, mostly on fastbreaks and strong cutting plays, before spraining his left knee. (It was just a precautionary measure, please keep this in mind.) The Cameroon native looked generally comfortable with the speed of the NBA game, which is a good sign. Siakam's contract (again, according to Basketball Insiders) will play him $996,000 in its first year (or $1.2 mil at the 120% value).
Though it's still unclear what roles Poeltl and Siakam will have with the Raptors next season, both seem energized to be playing NBA-level basketball. And, more importantly, both are already showing the skills that earned them a spot in the league to begin with.
The Raptors next Summer League opponent is the Minnesota Timberwolves, who they play on Sunday, July 10th at 6pm EST.
Welcome Jakob and Pascal!
