Since the firing of "TV" Tom Sterner and Bill Bayno, there's been speculation around what the new staffing around head coach Dwane Casey would look like. That picture gets a little clearer today with the report from Yahoo's famously reliable Adrian Wojnarowski that the Raptors will hire Rex Kalamian as an assistant coach.
Yahoo Sources: Toronto is finalizing an agreement to hire Rex Kalamian as an assistant coach. He had been on OKC's staff for six seasons.— Adrian Wojnarowski (@WojYahooNBA) June 29, 2015
With the Thunder, he was chiefly responsible for player development, specifically on the offensive end. In his six years working under the Scott Brooks regime, the Thunder averaged on offensive rating of 110 and, in 2013, Kalamian was promoted to lead assistant. With Brooks gone and Billy Donovan entering, Oklahoma City elected in May not to keep Kalamian on board.
Not much else is known about this guy, but reading between the lines, he's developed plenty of offensive studs on the Thunder and has an existing relationship with Kevin Durant, who the Raptors are still expected to target in free agency next summer. Before that, his presence could be good for the offensive refinement of the young guys and could leave Casey to focus more on executing team defence - which, believe it or not by last season's results - is what he was hired to do.
What are your thoughts on the hiring?
