Raptors Waive Point Guard D.J. Augustin

The Toronto Raptors have made a bit more room on their roster to accommodate the impending Rudy Gay trade.

Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY Sport

While the Rudy Gay trade still hasn't been made official (lots of paperwork on these seven-player type deals I'm guessing), it looks like the Toronto Raptors are making room for the bevy of players they'd reportedly be acquiring in said deal.  The three for four trade would have put the Dinos over the NBA's roster limit of 15 players, so when the trade was announced last night, it was obvious that someone had to go.

The most likely options were the back-up point guards including Dwight Buycks, Julyan Stone and D.J. Augustin.  My money was on Buycks for a variety of reasons but it seems that D.J. Augustin in fact will be the casualty here.  From the Raptors PR folks:

The Toronto Raptors announced Monday they have waived guard D.J. Augustin. Augustin was signed by the club as a free agent July 22.

Augustin appeared in 10 games, averaging 2.1 points, 1.0 assists and 8.2 minutes.

This makes way then for the trade and continues the free-fall of Augustin of late.  A one-time lottery pick Augustin has struggled in recent seasons and may find himself out of the NBA completely next season at this rate.
