Marquee Match Up
7:00pm Detroit @ Syracuse
This is a game that has my attention for a few reasons. One, it’s a Syracuse game and I’m a big fan of any team from the Big East. Two, I want to see what the big deal is about this Fab Melo kid. And three, I want to see Kris Joseph play early in the season. The first two games of the year, forward Rick Jackson has been the star of the team which is what most people may have thought Joseph would be immediately. Joseph has averaged 12 pts, 6 rbs and 2 asts in 28 minutes which is good but not what you would expect from a pre season All Conference, let alone All American. How Kris Joseph performs in this game may be an indication of how the rest of the season may go.
8:00am Robert Morris @ Kent State
10:00am Northeastern @ Southern Illinois
4:00pm Virginia Tech @ Kansas State
7:00pm IPFW @ Xavier
8:00pm Boston University @ George Washington
8:00pm Long Island @ Texas State – Kyle Johnson has been quietly doing his thing for three years playing behind some talented players. He’s been steady as a scorer and rebounder from the guard spot so it would be worth checking him out.
8:00pm UMKC @ Central Arkansas
8:00pm Georgia State @ McNeese State
8:30pm Western Carolina @ DePaul – Harouna Mutumbo is on the rebound from a disappointing season as a sophomore season. He had 12 pts, hitting 4 threes, and 5 rbs in the team’s loss to Clemson to start the year and we should expect that Harouna will be hungry for this one in Chicago.
9:30pm Belmont @ Tennessee
10:00pm Arizona State @ New Mexico
10:00pm Idaho @ Washington State – Djim Bandoumel was a mystery at the Development Team camp and is still largely a mystery now. I’m not sure what kind of role he is expected to have on this Vandals team but in his 13 very efficient minutes against Eastern Oregon Djim had 14 pts in 13 minutes while throwing in 6 rbs for good measure. I’m just curious to see if he can replicate that effort against a good team.
10:30pm Cal-Northridge @ Cal
11:00pm San Diego State @ Gonzaga – Here is a game that will likely be a game that is telling of the early Zags. The Toreros will be a competitive team for sure this season and while roles are still being finalized for Gonzaga, the Canadian trio of Olynyk, Sacre and Arop need to put their stamp on. I mean, the point guard is out rebounding all three of them! Sacre and Olynyk in particular need to start playing to their size especially in the middle where the Bulldogs are thin. Arop will likely get more minutes in this one I think but primarily as the stopper.
