Raptors Start Summer League at 2-1

Friday July 8 - Win - Raptors 118, Mavericks 117 in OT

The Raptors won their first summer league game with an all around effort. Shooting nearly 52% from the field and 88% from the free throw line, the Raptors snuck out the win in overtime. Charlie Villanueva was the game star pouring in 21 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Pape Sow had a solid debut as well with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Other bright spots for the Raptors in the win were Omar Cook's 5 assists and only 1 turnover and Joey Graham and Canadian Olu Famutimi pouring in 12 points each. David Logan of Indianapolis and Scott Merritt of Marquette led Dallas with 22 and 21 points respectively.

Saturday July 9 - Win - Raptors 97, Heat 89

The Raptors kept the momentum going from their win the night before by beating the Heat 97 to 89. Some of the usual suspects had solid games including Joey Graham with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists and Charlie Villanueva with 16 points and 5 assists. However it was the Raptors 58th pick overall this year Uros Slokar who stole the show pinning 20 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks on the Heat. The Raptors didn't have as good a shooting game hitting only 41.8% from the field and 67% from the free throw line but Miami was nearly as bad going 43% and 68% respectively. Miami's first round pick this year Wayne Simien led the Heat with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Undrafted Canadian Juan Mendez who chose Miami's summer league team over the Raptors' had 4 points and 4 rebounds in 18 minutes of action.

Sunday July 10 - Loss - Grizzlies 103, Raptors 81

After a 2-0 start, the Raptors summer squad were brought back to earth last night against an experienced Grizzlies team. The Grizz pounded the Raptors on the glass, outrebounding the team 50 to 32 and got to the free throw line for 52 shots hitting 92% of them. The Raptors in contrast only got to the line for 30 attempts and only hit 76.7% of them. Charlie Villanueva (15 points, 4 rebounds) and Joey Graham (16 points, 6 rebounds) had strong games again and Levell Blanchard continued his consistent summer league play with 13 points. The Grizzlies team figures to be one of the stronger league teams with experienced NBA'ers and college players like Antonio Burks, Hakim Warrick, Andre Emmett and Dahntay Jones suiting up for them in addition to scoring machines like Kennedy Winston and Anthony Roberson. Warrick had 18 points and 9 rebounds in the win.
