The Raptors signed backup centre Greg Stiemsma earlier today, increasing their roster size to 17 going into training camp which begins later this month.
With the addition of Stiemsma, it is apparent that the team will have some choices to make regarding the recently signed Jordan Hamilton and Will Cherry. It should be noted that Stiemsma, Hamilton and Cherry are all on non- or partially guaranteed contracts.
With the roster lacking depth at centre behind Jonas Valanciunas, the signing of Stiemsma could allow Bebe Nogueira to develop at his own pace if he's not ready to contribute in a bench role to start off the season.
Stiemsma isn't a threat on the offensive end, but brings some shot blocking ability, as well as toughness and tenacity on defense. Coincidentally, he will wear number 34, just like former Raptors tough guy Charles Oakley:
Greg Stiemsma will wear #34. The @Raptors currently at 17 players heading into the opening of camp Sept. 30. #rtz

Stiemsma started 20 of the 55 games he appeared in with the New Orleans Pelicans last season and grabbed 4.1 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game.
Raptors fans might better remember him for his dust up with Valanciunas in February:
Stiemsma is potentially a long shot to make the roster, but will provide some depth should he make the team.
