After watching the Lithuanian team at the Fiba tournament this month, a worrying trend has emerged that has me concerned about Jonas.
He has trouble guarding bigs with a proficiency for pump fakes and post moves. (which is nearly every nba center) Against Puerto Rico he played 6 minutes and committed 5 fouls. In the entire tourney he has only played 38 minutes, in 3 games, committing 12 fouls! I know some of you will hate to hear this, but Andrea is a better post defender than Jonas. My hope is he can learn to defend the post the right way. The coach has even decided to go small, and leave JV on the bench most of the time. The sooner he gets on the summer league team the better. Amir had shown the same problems early in his career as well, and is improving. The good news is, our big white hope, is hitting 75% of his FGs.
So there is hope, but dont be surprised if you see his rookie year plagued by stat lines like: 5 mins, 4 fouls, 1/1 FGs.
Poll
What would be the best scenario be for Jonas' growth as an NBA center?
For Lithuania to succeed on the international stage, so he learns how to win. (35 votes)
For Jonas to enter camp early and work against real NBA centers and learn NBA officiating. (77 votes)
For the Raps to hire a big man coach, like other teams did with Patrick Ewing, Olajuwon, Kareem etc. (132 votes)
