Game Day Thread: Washington Wizards vs. Toronto Raptors
Washington Wizards at Toronto Raptors, Feb 3, 2012 7:00 PM EST
While I was interested to see how the Toronto Raptors would do against the Boston Celtics, I'm even more interested to see how they AFTER the Boston Celtics.
That's of course because the Dinos got crushed just two days ago by said Celts and now have to rebound tonight to get back on track.
In many ways the beleaguered Wiz are the perfect team to rebound against considering their record and play this season, but the same thought crossed Raptors' fans minds last month...and Toronto promptly lost to Washington, giving the Wizards their lone road win of the season to date.
And that was with Andrea Bargnani and maybe Leandro Barbosa, Barbosa, a game-time decision after missing practice with the flu.
Considering how tough it's been for the team to score down only one of the two, tonight could be a major challenge, even against the Wiz.
GO RAPS!

A question
So thought I’d start this game-thread tonight off with a question; if you were choosing right now, who would you take in a draft; John Wall or DeMar DeRozan?
Wall is younger, has more “appeal” one could argue, but faces many of the same challenges as DeMar in terms of fundamentals and development.
Hmm…

Really?
I would be shocked if it is not 100% wall.
Nick Young vs. DeRozan is barely a conversation at this point… let alone Wall.

Here's a real question...
Do the Raptors have a chance since Adam is doing this game.
Gray with 2 fouls
Second call was terrible – big loss for TO here as Gray was playing well.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
unbelievable
how horrid was that…a foul on the guy in front
Colangelo...
… with the State of Valanciunas address in the 1st quarter.
They’re going to regret going to that so early when this game starts to get away from the Raptors. The Valanciunas mention is a staple of the Devlin repetoire when the opponent’s lead has ballooned to 20+ pts.
There’s hope people! Hope is on the way!

LOL
Love it – the State of Valanciunas.
Was thinking the same thing but the Wiz are so bad they’re trying to give it away.

Sick ...
Casey has his initials on the cuff on his shirt
Colangelo on Bargs
Maybe we need to control the minutes a bit better on his return.
No sh!t, Sherlock.

obvious statement of the year.
Very interesting….
It sounds more like they are trying to trade Jose more than Barbosa.
Think that was a bit of a dig?
BC’s a master at that…maybe he’s not so keen on Casey’s rotations.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
I hope it was a dig. Your supposed centrepiece comes back from a nagging calf injury and your first move is to play him 40+ minutes per night during a back-to-back?! There are elementary school children who’d be able to make more competent personnel decisions.

i remember Bulls GM
getting into Vinnie DelNegros face for playing a somebody more than was agreed to in a meeting over his return from ingury…
raelly got hot in the lockerrom and press
didn't sound happy with Amir as well
and everybody sounds tradeable…as they all should be…
BC
Some little tidbits there of interest…especially around the rebuild. Like that he said anyone on the roster could be moved because the team wasn’t good enough as is. Seems obvious, but the old BC never would have been that transparent.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
Yikes
Everyone glued to their seats right now? Crawford hits the 3 to tie it at the buzzer but neither team playing well. This truly looks like the lottery bowl.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
adam...isn't that what they do to relax
at practice?
shouldn’t this be easy?
Nice to hear teams have already called regarding Barbosa
So ummm…. Get ’er done Colangelo
by MAS11 on Feb 3, 2012 7:44 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Yeah, Barbosa needed to be traded yesterday.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Feb 3, 2012 7:46 PM EST up reply actions
We’ve all heard the “teams call all the time about him…” lines from BC before. This time it better be followed by action.

fell like i walked into the perfect storm of basketball
this year with the raps
lockout.
inguries,
schedule.
refs
Seriously – welcome aboard!
Although it could have been worse…you could have been watching Andrea in years 1 through 5.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
but i understand big men take 4 to 5 years to mature in the NBA
he is about that time
personally...keep playing amir
toight as long as we stay ahead and things are good.
he really needs the work and hopefully something good happens
Wow
Move over Blake and LeBron.
OK, maybe not THAT good – but nice work Amir!

HUGE DUNK
But yeah, gotta keep it going inside. Team is doing that so far because of Washington’s lack of size, and that’s key for them to milk for the rest of this one.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
ya...well
we take whatever we get.
amir could use a little luck and opportunity
his hand must be good?????
personal problems solved last night????
What the hell kinda name is Shelvin?!?!?
by MAS11 on Feb 3, 2012 7:55 PM EST via mobile reply actions
A tough one.
I don’t know. Always liked the kid in college though.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
lets not go love nuts on amir
i mean..it is the second unit he is doing this against.
i just need him to do this night after night
the announcers seem like they just met Jasus!
i mean, slow down horsie
mcgee only had 13 minutes
gray had 5…amir only has 11
the point is when amir went nuts...
mcgee out of the game…well, most of it
just saying slow down on the sainthood
i understand its their job to get emotional
its my job to remark on it being a little much
we complain but our offence
but can someone tell me what is the defensive philosophy of the washington wizards.
Washington – you suck! We’re trying to tank up in here!
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Feb 3, 2012 8:14 PM EST reply actions
I feel like they have no system on defence and play strictly isolation basketball.
They have no ball movement, spacing or post up play.
On top of that their defence is pressure but they rotate horribly usually sending 2 or 3 defenders and are exposed to easy kick out passes and offesnive rebounding.
Time for Demar to light it up in the second half! Yes, we will likely be competing with Washington for ping pong balls so this is a game we should lose if we want to tank successfully.
why does....
someone who is encouraging tanking…
A) watch the game
b) chat about it.
right i forgot..
u want to free bayless and fire casey.
Better question for you
How does someone who is NOT encouraging tanking and wants the Raptors to win, put themselves through the torture of watching this team play “basketball” night after night?
And for nearly 7 years ha ha.
Plus, I’m sneakily hoping they tank…shhhh.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
No shame in my game...
TAAAAAAAAANNNNNNKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!
by best i mean getting some wins and getting lucky and getting the 3rd pick. i don’t think we will get a top 3 pick, we aren’t that bad.
Tough to say that...
After back to back 30+ pt losses… But ya, agree… Don’t think the Raps are WIZARDS bad.
Halftime Thoughts
Wow – this Wizards team is AWFUL. Seriously, Raps suck but this Washington team is brutal.
They’ve got enough streaky shooters though to hang around, but as long as the Raps keep going inside, this, unfortunately, should be a W.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
I was saying to D Stance the other night that I even love blowout losses like against Boston. Gives me a chance to really sit back and analyze things instead of focusing mainly on Twitter and the game-thread.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
I know we knock this team, but the lack of star power is the key, these guys are just forced t oplay above their abilities because of the lack of star power.
Remember the Spurs were the last place team in the NBA when Robinson went down, that allowed them to draft Duncan, and a dynasty was born. Two players turned a team from worst to a dynasty. Yes pieces were added along the way, but they were complimentary pieces.
jjsy worried about our free throws
just bugs me
Its over...
Washington remembered Derozan was on the floor.
wouldn’t you?
When is the last time you saw Lewis demand the ball and teammates look for him.
Btw….you seen Demar’s 3 point shooting over the last 17 games.
Wall
Tough to watch Wall play. He’s so fast, but…that’s about it. Can’t shoot, can’t lead, can’t run an offense…and his D seems sporatic. Like DeMar, think people expected more from him at this point.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
Even as a Duke fan i agree. Imagine if the Raps had taken him over DeMar?
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
this announce pisses me off
a drive in by K and the he blaims the Raps fall on Gray being in?
Oh please!
What did Devlin just mumble?
“Not as fast as you?”
Wow ha ha.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
How scary is this thought?
Demar might be a poor man’s Nick Younge…
#shudder
by MAS11 on Feb 3, 2012 8:52 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Think we had this discussion last year didn’t we? And I caught a ton of heat for saying something similar.
Now?
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
Don’t recall, but last year DeRozan was better and Younge was worse.
by MAS11 on Feb 3, 2012 8:57 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Meaning DeRozan was a better player last year and Younge (unbelievably) was a worse than he is this year. Not a good sign for Demar…
by MAS11 on Feb 3, 2012 8:59 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Wizards
Man I’d hate to have most of these guys on my team. It’s like the Wizards drafted Stephon Marbury’s cousins at every position or something.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
the nba should have the NIP
Not in playoffs.
How would a washington/raptors best of 7 series not get national attention.
you really think amir changed the game?
um…i liked his game and am happy for him…and this was the wizards…but still don’t think he changed the game.
i really need to have, I insist upon a little reality.
Wow, the Raptors spanking another team and outrebounding them by a 21-rebound margin. feels good for a change
Nick Young
Wow. Nothing like getting the ball after a jump situation, and launching a 3 immediately, missing everything.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
Now, now now!
Huge night for Jose but in all seriousness, yikes the Wizards are bad.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
very fun night...
i had to take an important telephone call so I could not talk but was watching with sound down…
really fun….
i hope we see this again next time…
Final Thoughts
Hard to know what to take from this game except that the Raptors made sure they didn’t play down to their level of competition and laid a beating on the Wiz.
Who are a terrible, terrible basketball team.
But lots of positives individually for TO, from Jose’s 15 assists to Amir’s bounce-back game and hopefully these carry over to Sunday’s match against…gulp…the Heat.
Thanks for chatting all!

this will be a stark reality check...
any chance at all bargs will be back?
