Charles Barkley is embarrassed by the state of the NBA. And after watching the Raptors struggle to put up 64 points last night against the Boston Celtics, can you blame him?
Of course, the logical next step when you are putting an inferior product on the floor would be to raise the average ticket price for the first time in three years.
The first time I played ESPN's 2012 NBA Lottery Mock Draft, Chad Ford had the Raptors selecting Indiana's Cody Zeller. I promptly found a quiet corner in my office and wept.
Of course, Ford redeemed himself by imagining a world where the Dinos win the lottery and select Kentucky's Anthony Davis with the first overall pick. Davis, Andrea Bargnani and Jonas Valanciunas could form one of the best young front lines in basketball, according to Ford.
Charles Oakley and Anthony Mason used some colourful language to describe the earliest incarnation of the Raptors' uniform.

Cody Zeller. LOL. That is funny! They gotta get a star with their pick next draft or all the suffering has been a waste.
What’s almost more depressing than the obliterations is the fact that the Raptors have won 7 games and are on a pace that will see them likely remain outside the top 5 draft picks. It’s almost a worst-case scenario so far: horrible performances against good teams to remind us how far away we are, but enough victories against bad teams to make sure we don’t get a top pick.
It’s upsetting to me that the Raptors can lose more than twice as often as they win and still not get a top-five pick. They’re already so bad as to be almost unwatchable. There isn’t anything like the “competitive balance” Deadspin seems to think exists.

raps have
a .304 record.
In 2010 that would have left them 6th in the league
in 2009 3rd
2008 6th
2007 7th
so being 6th with their record isn’t abnormal (although thats not going too far back).
That said the reason they are doing it, is as Barflies mentioned, is because they are beating bad teams. (1 win of a +500 team and that was Utah). And I think January was probably their toughest month.

If their are any games that the Raptors need to lose they are the ones against their lottery “rivals”.

It’s abnormal for sports leagues. Looking at the last five seasons, .304 would have been last in MLB all five times. In the NHL (even generously counting OTL as full losses) .304 would have been last four times and second-last the fifth time.

you are talking about
significantly different sports though. Much lower scoring means its alot easier to win/lose games. One player in those sports don’t have as big of an impact as they do in basketball either.
Competitive balance will never exist in basketball. Lebron James was the difference between the best and worst record in the league…. I can’t think of any other sport where that would ever happen

Rest Amir
The guy has already shown what he can do when healthy. The Raptors need to put him on IR for a while to get him healed up. In the meantime, we can give Ed and Gray minutes to see what they can offer and maybe even throw Alabi out there a bit more often.

Nice up-date on the European leagues. While Jonas is our main area of concentration, Giorgios leading the Greek league in PER is, well, a surprise. I forget if we still ahve his rights or did we dish him off recently?

BOSTON – Due to the lockout and the late start of the NBA season, Bryan Colangelo had not had a chance to see and talk live with top prospect Jonas Valanciunas since last summer.
Toronto’s president and general manager rectified that situation recently by having productive meetings with Valanciunas, Lietuvos Rytas head coach Aleksandar Dzikic, its owner and Lithuanian national team head coach Kestutis Kemzura.
"It was just more than anything, an expression that all of our interests are aligned. We want what’s best for Jonas, want him to be as prepared as possible to make the best possible entrance into the NBA," Colangelo said before his Raptors took on the Celtics on Wednesday night.
"Everybody now is certainly on the same page."
Colangelo insisted there were no issues before and definitely aren’t any now.
"We had a chance to learn a little bit more about the situation, which is always good. Bridge a little bit of communication between all the parties, which is equally important when the buyout is concerned (the Raptors will buy Valanciunas out after Rytas concludes its season) … more than anything, making sure everybody had the same vision and I think that is very much the case."
Colangelo and executive vice-president of basketball operations Ed Stefanski watched Valanciunas put up a strong outing against Bennetton Treviso (17 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks by his count) and saw him go through a spirited practice, despite being tired.
"He had a spectacular game when we were there and also a very solid practice. They had just come in from playing a game in the Czech Republic," he said.
This summer, Lithuania will be playing in a last-chance Olympic qualifying tournament in Venezuela. If the team qualifies for London, Valanciunas will not be able to attend NBA summer league, alongside whoever Toronto selects in the 2012 draft.
The tournament goes from July 2-9, while summer league should start about a week later.
"It’s safe to say, if they qualify, he’s going right back into training at the Olympics. If they don’t qualify, he’ll be in a better position to join us," Colangelo said.
Considering how good Lithuania is, a trip to Las Vegas doesn’t seem to be in Valanciunas’ future this summer.

The best rookies are not dunkers so I don’t see anyone getting hyped as much as BG did last year.
I say he should go for it.
