Raptors 2012 Free Agents - Who to Keep, Trade or Dump

Unrestricted

Aaron Gray

Leandro Barbosa

Jamaal Magloire

Anthony Carter

Rasual Butler

Restricted

Jerryd Bayless QO of $4.2 million

I would like them to keep Gray, Barbosa and Bayless if the numbers are right. My guess is that the Raptors will have a good chance to keep Gray, offer Barbosa a something under $5 million and extend the QO to Bayless. Gray would be the one most likely to stay. I think Barbosa and Bayless will try and get a better offer from another team.

I would really like

to keep Barbosa and Bayless too. Like you said, price is everything at this point because Raps will be hopefully getting a veteran FA next season.

Gray

and maybe Bayless.

Gray will be cheap backup centre. Not that old for a C.
Bayless could be a scoring guard off the bench in the guise of Jason Terry. But you can’t overpay for Bayless because he seems to have an ankle issue and he’s unproven. If he’s cheap yes. My guess is someone may offer more than he is worth and we will have to let him go, but if he’s available cheap, he’s worth a contract.

Barbosa

He needs to be traded soon if we can get anything with potential in return. He’s a good player on the wrong team. He does not fit into our future plans unless he took a large salary deduction and kept buying into Casey’s system. I would guess he will be too expensive and I am not sure if Casey likes him or not. He sure is instant offence and seems like a nice guy. I wish him all the best if he leaves.

At 3 million per I would keep him but I think he will demand 5-7 million and its too much at this time.

I Don't Know If He Would Take $3 MIllion

He can more money than that playing in Brazil when you include endorsements etc. According to what I read his wife would prefer him playing in Brazil

However, I agree that I would not offer him much more than that. $3 million appears reasonable though I doubt it would be enough to keep him..

There's a few easy decisions, at least

Magloire, Carter, Butler – good luck in retirement. Is Jamaal a coach in waiting?

Barbosa we need; for him I’d overpay. Bayless – Keep if his salary is reasonable.
Gray – whatever the going rate is for a backup centre, and not a penny more. His rebounding is OK, but he can’t create his own shot, and I haven’t seen a lot of passing skill.

We don’t need a chucking two guard who likes to turn the ball over. Overpaying for one is an even bigger mistake. Let Barbosa walk (if you cannot trade him). He is just taking valuable minutes from the other bad 2’s we have.

I like keeping Gray around.

Sadly it seems he may offer more going forwards than Alibi, which is a shame because of the potential much better basketball minds than I believed he had.

I think the Bayless experiment is ready to peter out. I’d rather we stick with Jose and continue auditions for his replacement – hopefully with players more similar to him, acquiring them through a low first round draft pick or from the bench of a contender who wants Barbosa on their bench instead.

I think the Bayless experiment was a smashing success...

He is an excellent reserve to use when points / defence are lacking from the starters…

He isn’t our future starting PG but is very useful in the reserve role created by moving Barbosa for a pick…

I don’t think the role you’ve identified, regardless how effective Bayless is at executing it, is something he will want to stay in town for.

Listening to him talk, he has acknowledged he needs to do whatever is asked of him in order to maintain minutes...

I also don’t think he is opposed to trying for Sixth Man of the Year awards ala. Jason Terry and Barbosa…

I think he has figured out he won’t be a starter anywhere but can get significant playing time and length of contract here…

I don’t see him leaving unless some other team overpays him. Which isn’t impossible given the shallowness of the Free Agent pool this off season. But I don’t see it happening.

He Could Start In The Right Situation

For example I can see him replacing Fisher in Los Angeles though LA. Gridlock is looking like Fisher’s heir apparent.
