Game Day Thread: Toronto Raptors vs. Boston Celtics

Raps_medium Celtics_medium

February 1, 2012

Sportsnet One - 7:30 PM EST

This one should be interesting.

Normally I'd say the Raps would be in tough against the C's but Boston hasn't exactly been setting the East on fire this year.

Plus, it sounds like Rajon Rondo is on the shelf for the Celtics one more game.

So win/win right?

On the other hand, if may not matter who plays for Boston if the version of the Raptors that "showed up" last night against the Hawks, takes the floor again. This to me is one of those "litmus test" matches for the Dinos, to see if indeed progress is being made, or the club's success has been more due to their schedule than anything else.

GO RAPS!

No Kleiza either...

Sounds like the Raps will be down another weapon. And also, Casey going big with the starters tonight.

DeRozan and James Johnson back at the 2-3

Aaron Gray in at the 5 and Ed Davis at the 4.

Interesting Test

As I noted in the blurb above, it’s going to be interesting to see which Raptors team shows up here tonight.

Avery Bradley

Also curious to get a close-up of the player many assumed would be a Toronto Raptor…

Trying to figure out how Casey chooses the starters

Do you think he throws darts? Randomly selects names from a hat? Asks Doug Smith for his expert advice? I’m at a loss…

He was saying he wanted to go big tonight so put Gray at the 5.

One night too late on that move, methinks.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Feb 1, 2012 7:49 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

Yep…think he was trying to ride that small-ball style that was good against Jersey. Problem is…the Hawks aren’t the Nets.

Matt Devlin kills me

He mentions James Johnson using quickness on that ‘and 1’… Meanwhile, I’m watching on tv thinking “wow that was a slow ass move”.

again, adam

its not just gray’s play…but that they be agressive inside.
use the attack game and find open men instead of selfish ball.

but not using gray at all does make me feel nuts!

No totally agree and the team struggles with that on a nightly basis. They just fall in love with the jump shot.

Here we go again...

…as Devlin just noted, first quarter troubles.

Thank you Matt.

Raps 1 of 6 from the FT line ain’t helping, neither is 4 of 12 shooting or 5 TO’s.

what in hell happened?
unbelievable missed shots and now turnovers….

He shows up occasionally but most of the time sleepwalks through games and lacks aggressiveness. That’s what’s wrong with DeMar.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Feb 1, 2012 8:05 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

The C’s are smothering him at every opp. And his weaknesses as a result (ball-handling, shooting) are showing.

Why do we have a shooting guard who doesn’t handle the ball well or shoot well again?

Doesn’t defend well or rebound or pass well either. Basically hes a hockey player.

Bad first Q

Raps didn’t get much O as usual, but man, terrible D. Celtics shooting 60% after 1, and getting WAY too many easy looks.

one thing about really good nba teams

if you take away the inside..they somehow find guys that can hit from the outside.

US?
Please…these guys are pros…why do they miss in such horrid jiant periods?
is it like a group mentality thing?

I think a big piece is the type of players on the team. But nice find by Barbosa there for Gray.

I think its about time Casey made some change in regards to the 1st unit, playing catch up basketball is killing this team

I actually agree with Leo here.

The lack of Andrea is hurting Amir on the offensive end.

Barbosa over DeMar every day of the week for me. I like DeMar’s potential and work habits, but I feel that way about some of the 6 year olds at my school, and I am not about to skip them into one of my middle school classes.

was trying to explain this in another posting

most do not understand that IF used properly, Gray can be an effective center.

but…ya, shots do need to be made and shooting 33 percent will never win ball games
never.
just cannot understand the group shooting hell that happens with this team.
I think they need a shrink.

by ppellico on Feb 1, 2012 8:41 PM EST reply actions

exactly!

thats why I get upset when people say gray isn’t part of this teams future!
who are they to say such nonesense?
Gray would be fantastic not only backing this guy up…but helping him learn the NBA routine.
he would be a 5 year guy next year,,,thats about when big men come into their own in the NBA

by ppellico on Feb 1, 2012 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

Have to agree, and if the team could just get some top tier talent, imagine how effective he could be off the pine?

Amir is probably my favourite Raptor, but I think he is highly tradable. I like Gray to back up Bargs/Val with James Johnson and Kleiza playing a little 4, if Ed Davis does not earn some minutes…

Halftime Thoughts

When KG is hitting a 3 like that, it doesn’t bode well for the rest of the game.

Toronto now down 57 to 35 at the half with nothing much going well.

Bayless, DeRozan and Gray have been ok in spots, but not much from anyone else.

Calderon in particular struggling. 37% shooting over last seven games, 0 of 5 tonight.

To congratulate you for using the words “point forward” and “Melo” in one line, without using a single negative.

Congratulations.

need to get over this

and simply understand and accept that THIS Raptor team cannot shoot.
it has to be one of the worst shooting teams I can remember.
the missed jumpers simply are unreal

by ppellico on Feb 1, 2012 9:10 PM EST reply actions

It’s funny, and refreshing, to hear your take as an outside observer who recently started watching the team. Because it’s quite true. A team of jump-shooters who can’t shoot.

35% on the night, and only 42% from the FT line.

by MAS11 on Feb 1, 2012 9:16 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

He looks really green to me. Great body, I see upside there, but I’d be hard-pressed to say he’ll be a stud at this point. Plus UCONN looks a mess lately.

by Adam Francis on Feb 1, 2012 9:16 PM EST up reply actions

Do you take him if you’re the Raps and you have the 2nd pick? (draft express has him ranked 2nd)

by MAS11 on Feb 1, 2012 9:19 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I think he’s a better prospect than Davis. I see some Amar’e in him because of his bulk and athleticism, and that’s the stuff scouts fall in love with. As for basketball IQ though or leadership skills…not much there yet.

Also, much like Perry Jones, he just doesn’t dominate 24-7 the way you expect someone with his body and skillset to.

MKG vs Barnes vs Wilson Chandler

I am afraid Barnes will be like Demar. Great body athletic, nicer jumper though. But not the greatest handles or great at seeing the floor and creating for teamates.

by VancouverIslandRapsFan on Feb 1, 2012 9:29 PM EST up reply actions

Well lets we win the lottery and get this team moving up for years to come. Havent see much of MKG, just that other posters have mentioned hes like a James Johnson clone? Opinion?

by VancouverIslandRapsFan on Feb 1, 2012 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

Ya I’m assuming your referencing Anthony Davis with the Camby comment and I kind of agree. He dominates defensively, but not much of an offensive game. For a draft that’s so deep, I’m beginning to think there may not be a Kobe/LeBraun/Howard like gamechanger.

by MAS11 on Feb 1, 2012 9:29 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Completely agree

Think it will be more like the 98 draft with Jamison, Carter, Nowitzki, Pierce. Some top tier guys, but not players (maybe Dirk) who carry teams consistently by themselves. We remember Pierce when his running mates didn’t include Rondo, KG and Ray Allen.

Not sure I have any right now. Still in shock over the complete and utter destruction at the hands of the C’s. Nothing positive from that one really except maybe the play of Aaron Gray.

But watching that one, you gotta feel like without Bargs, there could be plenty more of these to come.
