Game Day Thread: Toronto Raptors vs. Boston Celtics
This one should be interesting.
Normally I'd say the Raps would be in tough against the C's but Boston hasn't exactly been setting the East on fire this year.
Plus, it sounds like Rajon Rondo is on the shelf for the Celtics one more game.
So win/win right?
On the other hand, if may not matter who plays for Boston if the version of the Raptors that "showed up" last night against the Hawks, takes the floor again. This to me is one of those "litmus test" matches for the Dinos, to see if indeed progress is being made, or the club's success has been more due to their schedule than anything else.
GO RAPS!

No Kleiza either...
Sounds like the Raps will be down another weapon. And also, Casey going big with the starters tonight.

DeRozan and James Johnson back at the 2-3
Aaron Gray in at the 5 and Ed Davis at the 4.

Interesting Test
As I noted in the blurb above, it’s going to be interesting to see which Raptors team shows up here tonight.

Avery Bradley
Also curious to get a close-up of the player many assumed would be a Toronto Raptor…

Trying to figure out how Casey chooses the starters
Do you think he throws darts? Randomly selects names from a hat? Asks Doug Smith for his expert advice? I’m at a loss…

He was saying he wanted to go big tonight so put Gray at the 5.

One night too late on that move, methinks.

Matt Devlin kills me
He mentions James Johnson using quickness on that ‘and 1’… Meanwhile, I’m watching on tv thinking “wow that was a slow ass move”.

just like to see trying to go inside and
that makes my night…no matter who starts
again, adam
its not just gray’s play…but that they be agressive inside.
use the attack game and find open men instead of selfish ball.
but not using gray at all does make me feel nuts!
No totally agree and the team struggles with that on a nightly basis. They just fall in love with the jump shot.

Thats where Jump Shooters R US came from. I have always hated all the jump shooting

Here we go again...
…as Devlin just noted, first quarter troubles.
Thank you Matt.
Raps 1 of 6 from the FT line ain’t helping, neither is 4 of 12 shooting or 5 TO’s.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
now really...
what in hell happened?
unbelievable missed shots and now turnovers….
this team is killing me!
He shows up occasionally but most of the time sleepwalks through games and lacks aggressiveness. That’s what’s wrong with DeMar.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Feb 1, 2012 8:05 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions
The C’s are smothering him at every opp. And his weaknesses as a result (ball-handling, shooting) are showing.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
Bad first Q
Raps didn’t get much O as usual, but man, terrible D. Celtics shooting 60% after 1, and getting WAY too many easy looks.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
one thing about really good nba teams
if you take away the inside..they somehow find guys that can hit from the outside.
US?
Please…these guys are pros…why do they miss in such horrid jiant periods?
is it like a group mentality thing?
Chance for the Raps to make a run
C’s second unit struggling again here tonight.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
ya know...kind of like this line up
on the floor right now…
gray and amir
Why does the first unit always get blown away in 1st quarters?
I think its about time Casey made some change in regards to the 1st unit, playing catch up basketball is killing this team
I actually agree with Leo here.
The lack of Andrea is hurting Amir on the offensive end.
That being said, I still expect him to be a major factor on the glass, which hasn’t been the case either.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
well...everybody
is effected badly by Andrea out.
He opens it up for everybody
Boston held orlando to 56pts
I wonder if we’re gonna say the same again tonight
Was just tweeting that Boston’s D deserves a ton of credit here tonight. They’re closing out on everything.

Our best offensive player Bayless is on the bench, im all for starting him over DeMar although hes undersized
Barbosa over DeMar every day of the week for me. I like DeMar’s potential and work habits, but I feel that way about some of the 6 year olds at my school, and I am not about to skip them into one of my middle school classes.

10 to 3 run....!
i had to take care of a small emergency and i come back….
but missed nothing, really.
same o same o
wow we fall down all by ourself!
god…the turnovers are almost sad.
I like Gray. He is big/young/tough. Good bench player going forward. Not many guys his size that can play a bit…

was trying to explain this in another posting
most do not understand that IF used properly, Gray can be an effective center.
but…ya, shots do need to be made and shooting 33 percent will never win ball games
never.
just cannot understand the group shooting hell that happens with this team.
I think they need a shrink.
tell the truth...20 minuts to me is a max I ever wanted gray to play
any more and you really must have a problem with the team.
exactly!
thats why I get upset when people say gray isn’t part of this teams future!
who are they to say such nonesense?
Gray would be fantastic not only backing this guy up…but helping him learn the NBA routine.
he would be a 5 year guy next year,,,thats about when big men come into their own in the NBA
Have to agree, and if the team could just get some top tier talent, imagine how effective he could be off the pine?
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
Amir is probably my favourite Raptor, but I think he is highly tradable. I like Gray to back up Bargs/Val with James Johnson and Kleiza playing a little 4, if Ed Davis does not earn some minutes…

Amir would be a great back up on Memphis, LA Lakers and a few other squads…

Halftime Thoughts
When KG is hitting a 3 like that, it doesn’t bode well for the rest of the game.
Toronto now down 57 to 35 at the half with nothing much going well.
Bayless, DeRozan and Gray have been ok in spots, but not much from anyone else.
Calderon in particular struggling. 37% shooting over last seven games, 0 of 5 tonight.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
now that is the second time in 2 minutes that
an idiot kept driving for his shot when gray was right there for a dunk
selfish stupid ball
i know, sorry
but i did just open a fantasic Pale Ale!
Paul Pierce=Magic Johnson
Dishing all those assist unreal
I've been sent here by the NBA.
To congratulate you for using the words “point forward” and “Melo” in one line, without using a single negative.
Congratulations.
- Just call me Dirk!
Twitter: @4Hoopz
need to get over this
and simply understand and accept that THIS Raptor team cannot shoot.
it has to be one of the worst shooting teams I can remember.
the missed jumpers simply are unreal
Soooooo.....
Anyone seen Andre Drummond in action? I haven’t seen him play live yet and curious to get feedback.
by MAS11 on Feb 1, 2012 9:12 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Got a bunch of touches, offensive fouled a lot, got frustrated and made more mistakes...
"the Truth"
He looks really green to me. Great body, I see upside there, but I’d be hard-pressed to say he’ll be a stud at this point. Plus UCONN looks a mess lately.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
Do you take him if you’re the Raps and you have the 2nd pick? (draft express has him ranked 2nd)
by MAS11 on Feb 1, 2012 9:19 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I think he’s a better prospect than Davis. I see some Amar’e in him because of his bulk and athleticism, and that’s the stuff scouts fall in love with. As for basketball IQ though or leadership skills…not much there yet.
Also, much like Perry Jones, he just doesn’t dominate 24-7 the way you expect someone with his body and skillset to.

We need a Scorer.
Wish we had Paul George on this team.
by VancouverIslandRapsFan on Feb 1, 2012 9:25 PM EST up reply actions
Um wasn't Ron Harper an All star before he joined th bulls?
Not many people remember but he was a big time scorer before he joined MJ and the Bulls and was asked to be a defender.
by MAS11 on Feb 1, 2012 9:31 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
True, he was very good before he was third fiddle...I have no idea about All Star...
Actually Rodman was a good scorer in his early years too…
"the Truth"
He has the potential to be the next amare. Id rather potentially have the next amare vs the next Camby. Henry Sims game has looked nice tonite for the hoyas.
by VancouverIslandRapsFan on Feb 1, 2012 9:24 PM EST up reply actions
Yep, that’s my take too as noted above. Davis though to me just competes ALL the time. Watched him get beat up by TENN last Saturday and he kept coming back for more.

MKG vs Barnes vs Wilson Chandler
I am afraid Barnes will be like Demar. Great body athletic, nicer jumper though. But not the greatest handles or great at seeing the floor and creating for teamates.
by VancouverIslandRapsFan on Feb 1, 2012 9:29 PM EST up reply actions
We’re on the same page tonight VanRapsFan.
I like Barnes…but LOVE MKG for those same reasons.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
Well lets we win the lottery and get this team moving up for years to come. Havent see much of MKG, just that other posters have mentioned hes like a James Johnson clone? Opinion?
by VancouverIslandRapsFan on Feb 1, 2012 9:34 PM EST up reply actions
Ya I’m assuming your referencing Anthony Davis with the Camby comment and I kind of agree. He dominates defensively, but not much of an offensive game. For a draft that’s so deep, I’m beginning to think there may not be a Kobe/LeBraun/Howard like gamechanger.
by MAS11 on Feb 1, 2012 9:29 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Completely agree
Think it will be more like the 98 draft with Jamison, Carter, Nowitzki, Pierce. Some top tier guys, but not players (maybe Dirk) who carry teams consistently by themselves. We remember Pierce when his running mates didn’t include Rondo, KG and Ray Allen.
Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com
You might be right. But def some solid starters with allstar potential.
by VancouverIslandRapsFan on Feb 1, 2012 9:36 PM EST up reply actions
are the announcers different tonight?
what happened to thet whinny, high pitched fellow?
LOL
I think Matt forgot he’s got another quarter to go here.
by MAS11 on Feb 1, 2012 9:15 PM EST via mobile reply actions
When the Raptors' opponent extends their lead to more than 20...
… is Matt Devlin contractually obligated to mention Jonas Valanciunas? LOL

He made our “all-black hole team” for the Raptors last year:

How much time does ALabi have left on this team? Shorter or longer then Loren woods career?
by VancouverIslandRapsFan on Feb 1, 2012 9:37 PM EST reply actions
Raptors need to sign one of Shawn Kemp’s kids. Surely one or two of those guys must be draft eligible at this point, right?
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Feb 1, 2012 9:38 PM EST reply actions
From what I have seen of his son on the huskies he didnt get daddys hops and the huskies almost pulled his scholarship till the rainman stepped in. Not sure of the other 8 kids.

Final Thoughts
Not sure I have any right now. Still in shock over the complete and utter destruction at the hands of the C’s. Nothing positive from that one really except maybe the play of Aaron Gray.
But watching that one, you gotta feel like without Bargs, there could be plenty more of these to come.
