Game Day Thread: Atlanta Hawks vs. Toronto Raptors
Atlanta Hawks at Toronto Raptors, Jan 31, 2012 7:00 PM EST
No Bargnani for this one but Barbosa is good to go as the Toronto Raptors host the Atlanta Hawks tonight at the ACC.
The Raps of course are coming off a nice win over the New Jersey Nets, and are unbelievably looking for their fourth win in five games. The Hawks, as we mentioned in this morning's preview, are one of the top teams in the East and will be a very tough test tonight for the Dinos.
Toronto needs to keep Atlanta's 3-point shooting in check and hopefully get another big game for DeMar DeRozan.
Oh...and maybe keep Josh Smith in check this time?
GO RAPS!

Man, I don't see how they'll get this one
Not sure how the Raptors will beat this club. Josh Smith should just decimate our guys

again
pushing the ball.
When the Raps set up an offense its a Derozan missed jumper

quick fun fact
Raps with 7 fgs made. The last 5 of those came with 14secs or more left on the shot clock.

fun fact
Raps on pace for 32 turnovers and 0 fts!

Not watching right now...
… so fill me in:
Who is Joe Johnson lighting up? DeMar?
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Jan 31, 2012 7:34 PM EST reply actions
line up has been weird
Bayless on teague
Derozan on Johnson
Jose on Williams
to start, but its been switched around a bit.
Tons of fast break points on the Raps though
by Not so Friendly Stranger on Jan 31, 2012 7:36 PM EST up reply actions
looks good so far
regardless of score.
But Atlanta has screwed up some nice oportunities after passing the ball around a ton.. Score could have been worse.
I missed the start, but it sounded like Marvin failed to capitalize on Jose. Smart to put Jose on their worse offensive option and see what he does. Unconventional, but could be effective at times

Only really works if you play bayless next to jose

For sure. I like it. Bayless and Barbosa are the best 2 guards we have. Play DeRozan at the 3. Undersized or not, he does not operate out of the post as a 2 man anyway..Speed on the court should get DeMar the easy buckets that he is capable of…

I just don't thiink it's a long term solution
unless you think bayless is a SG when bargs gets back

If Bayless earns his keep. I see him as a combo guard off the pine. I am all for starting him this year though to see if he is worth keeping around? If it does not go well, I do not care that much.

we have less than they do...
but maybe because they pass the ball so much more…
i know....broken record here
but i hate seeing them get inside as often as they do.
i am really bothered by this style of basketball
You shouldn't be
Because really, the raptors aren’t disciplined enough to play inside ball.

well eventually they better fix this
playoff ball is all inside brutal
BTW…why no more Gray these days???
I am a little surprised we haven’t seen Gray at all in the first half
by Scott Campsall on Jan 31, 2012 8:10 PM EST up reply actions
kinf of felt it was going to happen when
i saw all their turnovers wer from gambles and lots of passing.
it just felt dangerous…they were getting inside and turning it over…but still getting inside
um... a little late to recognize
you got killed inside.
in 1 minute he has more rebounds than Amir in the first half…
now…if everybody lets amir off cause he is hurt…why keep him in?
very confused fan here
I think this year might be a throwaway year for him. He has had his moments, but at the end of the day he isn’t a center, and he isn’t going to excel playing center all season
+1 on to what Scott said about Amir…
He can not play center for long stretches. He gets worn down and is over matched. With James Johnson out gritting him and capable of playing some 4, and Kleiza capable of playing some 4. The long term role of Amir with our current make up is not a huge one.
He can play a few minutes of center a night, but if there are not many minutes out there for him at the 4, he is not going to do too much.
Casey does seem creative with his match ups though. Maybe Amir continues to play the 5 a few minutes a night when we have a running line up out there. Maybe he plays some 3 for a FEW minutes a game when we go with a very big 2-1-2 zone…

If they decide that they like Kleiza and James Johnson, Amir should be a tradable piece. He is a great guy, and a good role player. He would look great in Memphis right now, and even once ZBo gets back. Give him 20-25 minutes a night backing up Zack and Marc Gasol.

how do you not foul immediately… let along wait for 3 atlanta possessions and 1 raptors possession?
god damn stupid

good fight by Raps
watching Kentucky here and really liking MKG nsd Teague, either one would look good on the Raps. MKG kinda duplicates James Johnson tho, they play the same hustle game without offensive polish.
I am interested to see how MKG’s game translates at the next level
by Scott Campsall on Jan 31, 2012 8:36 PM EST up reply actions
as much as I LOVE their simple
inside out game…
they still make some unbelievable last minute shots.
so its not all their inside game…they shoot well as well
coach is confusing me tonight
he lost me with his plan last game and this game…
but what do i know.
casey might be a really good defensive mind
but he is sucking as an offense coach.
wonder if he even works on inside out basketball.
is he just a run n gun coach?
maybe he needs just a runnibg jump shooting club
He needs a point guard that can run, if we are to be a running team. Neither Bayless or Barbosa are long term solutions at the 1, and Jose is not a transition pg.

No doubt
The Raptors have struggled offensively, but I am going to reserve judgement on Casey until he get’s a full training camp and some better players to work with.
by Scott Campsall on Jan 31, 2012 9:03 PM EST up reply actions
inside out is not comlicated
its the most simple yet successful game there is
this team shoots to much individual ball for me…personally
you still need to have the personnel to be successful. There are a number of factors at work here..
by Scott Campsall on Jan 31, 2012 9:15 PM EST up reply actions
Who the hell is he throwing the ball inside to?!?!
BTW Aron Grey is not an option!
by MAS11 on Jan 31, 2012 9:06 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
you are absolutely wrong
watched him for years and he has been good at this…
if you don’t believe…well, that’s why we are here….
it hasn’t been tried so you can’t diss so easily.
you are a losing team.
losing record.
you gonna tell me you don’t want to try this option just because your other options are soooo successful?
um…ok
Look, we all understand you are a big fan of Gray and that’s cool. But to start suggesting the team start running their offence through a player who is a fringe NBA talent is ridiculous. Let him play his role as a career 12 th man and be happy.
by MAS11 on Jan 31, 2012 9:14 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
what's this we stuff?
gonna start with claiming a majority opinion or position here?
Not going for it.
plus not going for the bait on Arron Gray being my only issue here.
My issue is the plan.
The plan as I have been watching this year is to defend…then on pffense, play individual drive in ball.
Not even drive in and pass out…just drive in for your shot.
Now I do give a damned if its gray or amir or anybody…get the ball inside.
If you are telling me you have nobody..amir to small and gray to poor a player, then you tell me the remaining option.
to expect me to sit around for a season and watch this current plan is pretty poor thinking.
So…I want a better plan.
And if you haven’t tried something, and you suck…then try something.
an example
gray is a fantastic passer. they should at least try to get him the ball and he can redistribute outside or to an open player.
you have a 7 footer you do not even try to get going…except by accident as a 4th or 5th emergency option
If Dwayne Casey starts running his offence through Gray, not only should he be fired as the Raptors coach, but he should be labotomised!
by MAS11 on Jan 31, 2012 9:11 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
i should be labotomised
for watching this plan he has
come on…you tell me why gray was not played.
he played well…then never again tonight…
this is a plan? ok.. nice.
well…it is above my pay level to understand.
obviously ya all are brighter than i
Probably because they do not see him as a long term part of the rotation. Maybe they are wrong, but other than Rasual Butler, they seem to give minutes to guys that they know they will keep around or are auditioning…

then why all the emotion?
coach or anybody involved should take this like the medicine they are giving us.
Coach Casey sat all his future stars and uttered anger at their play.
And nobody should be considered a future player on this team.
Never.
“cept maybe Bargs…but hell…nobody else.
The rest are all marginal NBA players in my opinion.
real rough
i got more entertainment watch Kentucky earlier and North Carolina now
