Game Day Thread: Toronto Raptors vs. Utah Jazz

Toronto Raptors at Utah Jazz, Jan 25, 2012 9:00 PM EST

January 25, 2012

TSN2 - 9:00 PM EST

Remember saying last night the Raptors needed a win bad? Well they got it, and now they look to continue their winning ways tonight in Utah against the Jazz. Bargs will need to potentially score 56 in this one considering how well the Jazz have played to start the season. They're getting great production from a number of unlikely sources and have a bench that can cause some major match-up issues.

Yes, Devin Harris has played like he's about to enter the retirement home, but this will be a tough test for the Dinos, and a full team effort will be needed again tonight to get a W.

GO RAPS!

First!!! lol

Can anyone confirm if Eric Gordon signed an extension today or if he is indeed a Restricted Free Agent this off season?

Today was the deadline…

4 Year $16 mil per is the max he can get…

Thoughts? Answers?

Houston Rockets are having a sale

They declined to pick up options on T Williams, J Flynn, J Hill and H Thabeet making them all F.A. this summer. They are apparently willing to trade any of them for players that can help them in the playoffs (Barbosa immediately came to mind).

Would you guys/gals do this:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=89mywyb

Houston also gets Toronto’s 2012 2nd round pick
Toronto also gets New York’s 2012 first round pick (top 5 protected) which is now owned by Houston.

Houston get’s some help off the bench in Barbosa while not committing to any long term contracts, while Ed Davis gives them a cheap PF prospect to replace the 2 bigs they are letting walk this summer. Their other PFs off their bench in Patterson and Morris are undersized for the position.

Raptors get T Will who has been hard to deal with so far but does have talent and personality and Thabeet just makes salaries work. They may want to resign TWill and let Thabeet walk in the summer. More importantly though, we get another pick which is likely to be in the 10-20 range depending on how the Knicks do.

If you were Houston would you do this?

I'm intrigued by Flynn, Hill, and Thabeet.

All low cost, low risk and could be great in the right situation. However, due to the nature of this year’s draft I think it is a real toss up as to whether anyone of them are better than having an extra pick in the first round, which we could most likely get for Barbosa from a team like the Lakers (trading Barbosa to the Lakers has been mentioned here recently and I think that would make a lot of sense).

we got an extra 1st round pick while giving up our 2nd round.

Thw 1st round pick we’d be getting from this is higher than what we’d get from the lakers. The question is if Davis is worth giving up in this trade.

No Big Al?

Yay, for the Raptors.
Boo, for my fantasy team…

Raptors definitely catching a break

but Utah has one of the deepest front courts in the league

by Scott Campsall on Jan 25, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

i've had it with these

touch stupid fouls on big guys so early in the game.
it takes all fun and fairness out of the game.
really rediculous

by ppellico on Jan 25, 2012 9:24 PM EST reply actions

I like the starting lineup, bring in Amir just past halfway mark of quarter

by axl t on Jan 25, 2012 9:25 PM EST reply actions

me too

it gives them a different look and Amir doesn’t have to shoulder as much of the load at center

by Scott Campsall on Jan 25, 2012 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

wait, what happened?

Bayless was in the game, i looked down, looked back up and he was out of the game.

by Scott Campsall on Jan 25, 2012 9:30 PM EST reply actions

Ok so...

…we’re not getting the game here, but the score doesn’t look promising.

how is it every game we play

the fouls difference is so bad so early?
its like 8 or 9 to 3 right now!
OK…so at garbage time refs even it out after the game was already controlled by themselves so I don’t care about the foul count at the end…
the calls so early really determin how subs the rest of the game happen…

really pissed again tonight folks…

Welcome to raptor fandom

by axl t on Jan 25, 2012 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

I think a big piece of the foul issue is Casey’s style too.

how so???

not that bright with coaching stuff so hopefully you get a chance to expand on this tonight

by ppellico on Jan 25, 2012 9:43 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, that’s a factor, but the differential always seems skewed, esp on the road

by axl t on Jan 25, 2012 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

Josh Hayward

love Devlin.

Hope Utah leaves their bench out there…. they are giving Toronto a chance

by B-Rex(5) on Jan 25, 2012 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

They did try it last year, it was really bad for some reason, just couldn’t do the same things

Tied at the half.....

Glad to see this…been busy and wasnt looking at the score but i noticed it was 26-12 in the 1st so i thought this one would be long gone…..looks like its barbosa, kleiza and bayless running the show right now. (just from the boxscore, idk how the game is actually looking)

by yellowalman on Jan 25, 2012 10:27 PM EST reply actions

not sure why, I’m always surprised when I see Gray and forget that he’s a white guy.

by Ustation on Jan 25, 2012 10:34 PM EST reply actions

Refs letting them play now … Good game!

by axl t on Jan 25, 2012 10:45 PM EST reply actions

Bayless...

Like DD and JJ he suffers from not being a good halfcourt player. While he has a better handle and jumpshot, he isn’t a very good passer. His reads aren’t bad but he doesn’t deliver the ball on target and in time. Jose is a floor general and much more vocal, he understands how to get the ball to people in good situations, a true pg. I see Bayless as more of a combo guard who can put up points, similar to Jamal Crawford. While Bayless has talent, his style isn’t that of a pure pg but a score first pg. Definitely could have a place on a team but I see it as a 6th man.

by Shalax23 on Jan 25, 2012 10:50 PM EST reply actions

Have only caught some of the game. But from what I saw of Bayless he only has hurt the team. Taking ill advised shots early in the clock when Barbosa was going and when there was no rebounders. We get it that you can get a shot off. He doesnt seem to have the vision or handles to be a backup point. Barbosa does a better job of bayless tries to do.

by VancouverIslandRapsFan on Jan 25, 2012 10:50 PM EST reply actions

he’s better with players who need him to create for them. I would like to see Bayless on a lineup with guys who space the floor because he can create for himself, but he can’t function in a system.

by Shalax23 on Jan 25, 2012 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

Touche! Take him out hes killing the flow.

by VancouverIslandRapsFan on Jan 25, 2012 10:52 PM EST reply actions

He doesn’t iniaite the offence very well, dribbles it and wastes about 7 seconds.

by Shalax23 on Jan 25, 2012 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

That pisses me off. Bayless decides to stand about 10 feet behind the three point line, instead of sprinting to the three point line where if DD makes that pass he gets an open look.

by Shalax23 on Jan 25, 2012 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

but no….he has to stop the flow and yell set up set up and point his finger, he takes teh flow out of the offence. It makes you appreciate Jose.

by Shalax23 on Jan 25, 2012 10:58 PM EST up reply actions

Sure does. Dont think he has the skills to pass to a cutting player. He always looks like hes at risk for causing a charge when he drives.

by VancouverIslandRapsFan on Jan 25, 2012 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

When he took that three I thought I was gonna have to eat my words, but nope another brick.

by VancouverIslandRapsFan on Jan 25, 2012 10:56 PM EST reply actions

I propose a DD and Bayless trade for CJ miles and Devin Harris.

by VancouverIslandRapsFan on Jan 25, 2012 10:59 PM EST reply actions

I assume you believe people believe DD still has potential?

by Shalax23 on Jan 25, 2012 11:01 PM EST up reply actions

I used too. Think he will have a great career in the Drew league.

by VancouverIslandRapsFan on Jan 25, 2012 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

Disagree with Jack...

That was not fearless, in fact he got bailed out beacuse he didn’t take that strong. He double clutched, he has to goto dunk that ball first. He turned his body angle away from the hoop before he was even it.

by Shalax23 on Jan 25, 2012 11:02 PM EST reply actions

That layup on the left side was a take.

by Shalax23 on Jan 25, 2012 11:04 PM EST up reply actions

Needs to do it in two dribbles instead of three though, you can tell his footwork isn’t great because he needs that extra dribble to get his feet coordinated.

by Shalax23 on Jan 25, 2012 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

AB jumper....

He is using his legs alot more on his three point shot and actually has some spring, you can fit more than change under there now.

by Shalax23 on Jan 25, 2012 11:05 PM EST reply actions

Jack Armstrong...

Bargnani takes a charge…

Last year that would of been a dunk, that man would of been running two steps the other way. This year its a charge, thats improved help D.

Love JACKY!

by Shalax23 on Jan 25, 2012 11:15 PM EST reply actions

great individual d.. but not team d… sigh

by Ustation on Jan 25, 2012 11:18 PM EST reply actions

Can someone tell me

What happened with Bargnani? Why was he forced to leave the game with 1 min left in OT?

by David G. on Jan 25, 2012 11:44 PM EST reply actions

Shucks. Did he re-aggravate his calf injury?

by David G. on Jan 25, 2012 11:47 PM EST up reply actions

tv is doing a horrible job explaining it.

by Ustation on Jan 25, 2012 11:51 PM EST reply actions

Why is Butler on the floor?

by McGateway on Jan 25, 2012 11:59 PM EST reply actions

to help the raps try and get more ping pong balls.

by Ustation on Jan 26, 2012 12:00 AM EST up reply actions

They should have put him in 3 weeks ago then:P

by McGateway on Jan 26, 2012 12:01 AM EST up reply actions

Nooooooooooooooooooooo

Bargnani …

Great game other than that … Heart attack

by axl t on Jan 26, 2012 12:03 AM EST reply actions

Good way to end any chance of going on an extended winning streak. Bad break for Barney who played so/so.

by McGateway on Jan 26, 2012 12:04 AM EST up reply actions

Other than shooting percentage, he was looking great. Screw the pin pong balls, I want to see them play like that some more. Bargs had to get helped off the floor by magloire though, he’s out for a while I bet.

by axl t on Jan 26, 2012 12:11 AM EST up reply actions

Its Sad When..........

Guys like Bargs and Bosh are our franchise guy, yet on a good team they are no more than a number 2 or 3

by billsfan_905 on Jan 26, 2012 12:19 AM EST reply actions

Agreed! Like wtf is wrong with some people :)

by Assistant GM on Jan 26, 2012 12:53 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

That I don’t treat every game like its the NBA Finals and realize that us winning only lowers our lottery odds? Yeah wtf is wrong with me?

big win

wanna see more of that kind of effort

by Member29 on Jan 26, 2012 12:52 AM EST reply actions

are still in shock for this B2B win on the road..
