Buffery and Gallagher are such hacks

I don’t doubt that Nash would have made a difference to this team, but it’s not like they couldn’t have qualified without him. Canada should have beaten both Venezuela and Panama (especially Panama). If the team had enough talent to beat the Dominican Republic, then it certainly had enough talent to beat both of those lesser teams. Unfortunately, things turned out the way they did.

Every time there is an international tournament these joker “journalists” use it as a chance to smear Nash. Nash is currently helping to develop the next generation of soccer players through his involvement with Vancouver White Caps and he has for many years been running basketball development leagues in BC. I would have loved for him to have a last hurrah for the national team as much as anyone, but the guy has contributed in the past and he is currently giving back more than his fair share by helping to develop coming generations of players.

Buffery and Gallagher, what are you two chumps doing to help basketball in Canada?

Gauntlet has been thrown ...

I agree that they, at least in these stories, are trying to hack Nash down a peg or seven. I won’t agree with someone rants about a player who makes no bones about not wanting to participate. Why isn’t this sort of kick up given for Dalembert? Or even Thompson who said he wanted to play? That is just weak in my eyes. Just because he’s Canadian it doesen’t mean he’s obligated for life to anything. I at least agree with Grange’s take more than those two.

And for another side … http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/Is-it-Steve-Nash-8217-s-fault-that-Canada-8217?urn=nba-wp8264

I will be posting something about this chatter in the next few days, once all the boo birds have had their say.

Bah!

You guys are way too easy on Nash. He definitely deserves some blame in my eyes.

He is such a focal point for Canada Basketball…he should have been there. Maybe I am bitter and emotional about yet another crap showing but the best player Canada has ever produced and him not playing is inexcusable. It is our weakest (and most important) position and he is such a catalyst for all the other missing guys playing.

If Wayne Gretzky wants to call Nash out for not showing up to represent his country then that is fine. If clowns like Buffery and Gallagher want to shoot their mouths off then I think they can take their commentary and shove it.

I think Nash himself might acknowledge that this summer was a missed opportunity that he should have taken. However, the level of vitriol directed his way is totally out of proportion. As I mentioned above, it’s not like the guy is totally ignoring his country. He runs basketball programs for youngsters, a charitable foundation and has been involved with the soccer academy that the White Caps run. And that is ignoring the fact that the guy has kids.

Personally, I don’t coach a kids basketball, give money to basketball Canada or even make it out that often to local university games in town. I don’t have any right to sit and judge the guy, so if that is being easy on him then I guess I’m guilty.

Buffery and Gallagher are fully within their right to criticize Nash? Same with me or you. We (anyone) has the right to express our opinion and be critical of the actions of others.

If fact I think it is Buffery and Gallagher’s job (and dare I say patriotic duty) to criticize Nash as they have the platform to effectively do it.

Do I need to be a former PM to criticize Harper?

Like it or not Nash is a public figure who represents Canada and Canadians. If we as Canadian do not like his behavior why are we not allowed to criticize him for it?

by Mojo J on Sep 9, 2011 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

My only issue is that Nash has openly said that he did not want to participate this summer. His reasons, crappy or not, should be irrelevant. The point had been made by him and I think very clear. How are people looking to blame him after his intentions are made clear from the beginning?

I have no problem with the criticism but the nature of it annoys me. Because someone is a very good surgeon, it doesn’t mean that he indebted to perform every surgery that he specializes in. He doesn’t want to play, so be it. Move on and get at those who say they will but don’t play – that’s all I’m saying.

Him being a Canadian basketball player might move him to play but he shouldn’t be guilted into playing simply because he’s got a Canadian passport. There are other players that could have filled roles that weren’t even invited to the workouts. Could they have made the team, maybe, but the added competition would have been better for the team (I would think).

That’s all my beef. I don’t think anyone should be any harder on Nash than any other players but simply because he’s who he is.

What I dont get is why these bozos think that any pro player would want to play with a team that have doofuses for coaches. Until Canada gets some real coaching, you cannot expect anyone to show up for the program.

Buffery and Gallagher are writers who specialize in doing hatchet jobs on whoever provides them with a convenient target. We are not exactly talking about Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce here. Defend them if you like, but personally I think you have more right to criticize Nash than they do. At least you are a fan with some emotional investment in the team’s success (citizen, patriot or whatever else you like). Those guys are just talking sh*t to get page views.

by DW19 on Sep 9, 2011 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Where is the passion?!?!?!

It doesn’t matter if his intentions were clear or not to me. I am critical of his intentions from the get go.

Was it not Jack Donohue that said, `There are two ways to represent your country: in war and in sports.’

We are not talking surgery here. Sports are different….there is nothing more symbolic of ones patriotism in my opinion.

At the risk of being a dork…this is like Superman saying he has better things to do right when Metropolis needs him most. C’mon Stevie!!! Canada needed you!

I’d just like to see a little passion out of Canada for something other than hockey. And frankly I am happy he is getting called out.

What if?

So suppose Nash had shown up, blown his ACL in the first game and Canada had still failed to qualify. He has screwed his career(given his age and the necessary recovery time), but at least he did his patriotic duty?

by DW19 on Sep 9, 2011 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Before I say to much, I want to mention I’m not overly concerned over who does or doesn’t play for team Canada but:

“So suppose Nash had shown up, blown his ACL in the first game and Canada had still failed to qualify”

thats a risk every player is taking though… Nash shouldn’t get a pass for that

by Not so Friendly Stranger on Sep 9, 2011 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

No other player on team Canada would be taking the same degree of risk. The rest of the team are all younger (ie. less injury prone, faster recovery, more years left in their career).

For what it’s worth, here is another person’s take on the situation:

http://nba-point-forward.si.com/2011/09/09/nash-doesnt-owe-team-canada-anything/?sct=nba_t11_a0

by DW19 on Sep 10, 2011 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions

sure on team Canada they may be younger

but are guys like Joel Anthony and Andy Rautins still not risking their NBA Careers? Or what about guys that play for other teams, like Dirk, Noah or everyone on Team USA?

I completely get that he has played this past season or two with half a back and I don’t think it would have made sense for him to play for team Canada this year. But that also doesn’ excuse him from previous years, nor mean any other player is risking any less either.

by Not so Friendly Stranger on Sep 10, 2011 7:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Those sound like excuses for a weak argument

Nash’s 12 years(91-03) of service to Team Canada just isn’t good enough. “What have you done for me lately”, is apparently the appropriate attitude, then?

If all of our up-and-coming players are equally uncaring, unpatriotic slackers we might actually have a chance of actually putting together a decent team in the coming years.

by DW19 on Sep 10, 2011 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

hold up here

I already said I don’t really care if he (or anyone) plays or not. This is not an ‘excuse’. I’m not bothered… I know these guys have NBA careers to worry about and I would really wish all NBAers (or atleast those that matter to me) stay away from these tournaments all together.

But the “well he might get injured” defense applies to every single player. And his “degree of risk” is no greater than a guy who still has 10-12 years of NBA ahead of them… hell one could argue their ‘risk’ is even greater as one injury may destroy their career (and millions of potential dollars… dollars Nash has already made). Yet they still play.

and never once did I say his previous service wasn’t “good enough”, nor was excusing anyone else from playing or not playing respectively. I simply understand where those guys who are very patriotic about/dedicated to Team Canada are coming from.

rbala said it best below “Nash has the right to refuse it like we have the right to criticize”

by Not so Friendly Stranger on Sep 10, 2011 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

The passion in there ...

That’s why I do this but I’m not about to get a guy, patriot or not, who’s not willing to participate. Makes no sense. If he’s not into it, he’s not. Duty or not, Nash has the right to refuse it like we have the right to criticize.

What about giving slack to Rick Fox, Bill Wennington..

If I recall rick fox only represented canada once, and bill wennington only once as well, so these guys should have been given the same amount of slack for not stepping up enough to rep canada

by mystro88 on Sep 11, 2011 4:34 PM EDT reply actions

Good point ...

It’s safe to say that the public only cares when there is something at stake. No one really cared in ‘88 when Wennington didn’t play or in ‘92 when Fox didn’t. It’s only when there is anything really on the line, of late anyway, that these guys get called out. The degree of criticism will always depend on stakes at hand when they are not participating.

bah again!

Those guys got called out back in the day. I’m old enough to remember that.
Now comparing them to Steve Nash is ridiculous though…

by Mojo J on Sep 14, 2011 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t remember Wennington but Fox I do. It would still be back to my point though. Those teams were successful and they made it to the elite events (meaning the the Olympics). They outcry I don’t think would be at the level that Nash has received since we’re missing the Games again as a country. I think the outcry would be far less if we did qualify which is to my point – the media only bothers to make a bigger stink if the failure is large. Minor successes require none or little talking because they made it in spite of people missing like the making the Worlds.
