The Senior Men fall short against Puerto Rico
This morning, Canada made a valiant comeback but ran out of time falling to Puerto Rico 79-74. Despite tying the game at one point after being down 15 points, PR pulled away late.
This loss means that the window of opportunity is closing for the Senior Men to qualify for the Olympics and Canada will need to win both the next two games against Uruguay and Panama to have any hope of making it to the now coveted fifth place spot in this tournament. The team plays again tomorrow morning at 10:30am.

Another bad game for Canada’s Cs. Anthony was -7 and Young -8.
In contrast, the PFs were:
Doornekamp +8
Olynyk 0
Kendall -1
Canada has done better with no true C in the game. Setting aside the 2 blowouts (Cuba and Argentina) and only looking at games against teams at or around Canada’s level (Brazil, DR, Ven, and PR), the aggregate plus/minus for the bigs has been:
Olynyk +8
Kendall +6
Doornekamp +5
Young -11
Anthony -34
I know plus/minus has its flaws, especially over the short run, but those stats are pretty telling and are over a 4-game period. The team has played much better with Olynyk, Kendall, and/or Doornekamp on the floor than Young or Anthony, and Canada should consider going with more sets with 2 of Olynyk, Kendall, and Doornekamp on the floor (or sets with 1 of those guys, 3 wings, and a point).
Re the wings, as poorly as Brown has been shooting, the team is performing better with him on the floor. Against PR, Brown was +4, Shepherd 0, Rautins -5 and English -9.
Aggregate over the Brz, DR, Ven and PR games:
Shep -2
Brown -3
English -25
Rautins -27
Again, that is a huge difference. English and Rautins have been hitting some shots, but the team seems to struggle when either or both are on the floor. It might be the turnovers or it might be the defense.
Re the point guards, same situation. Anderson has been shooting and scoring much more than Joseph, but the team is performing better with Joseph on the floor. +4 vs. -11 against PR, and +7 vs. -29 aggregate over the 4 competitive games.
If I have time later I will try and run some more numbers to see if it is the offense or defense that has been suffering/excelling with certain guys on the floor, and to see whether certain combinations have had notable results one way or another.
