Raptors HQ Open Thread - 2011 NBA Draft

Here we go kidz...draft night and the Raptors have the fifth pick...

Star-divide

Here's what we know:

The Raptors are looking at four main players in this draft; Brandon Knight, Jonas Valanciunas, Bismack Biyombo and Kawhi Leonard.

Who they take?

Well that's anyone's guess.

Sure, it sounds like Knight is the leading candidate, and Valanciunas will be gone, but really, regardless of 8 Million Mock drafts, Toronto's pick still greatly depends on what teams like Minnesota, Utah and Cleveland do above them.

This makes for an interesting evening, one that we'll be discussing almost pick-by-pick.

Chime in below and have your say.

Here we go...

Maybe the last chat of the year? As in 2011?

Let’s hope not but it does sound like a lockout is on the way.

In any event, Chad Ford just tweeted:

Starting to hear pretty strong signals that Biyombo is going to Raptors at 5.

So we’ll see…

so happy about that pick. We are building for rings, not playoff appearances. That’s why we can’t trade with SA.

by defensive rap on Jun 23, 2011 8:06 PM EDT reply actions

BC can't be that dumb and short sighted

He won’t deal with SA unless it is for picks and Hill. BC has to know that if Parker is whining about the Spurs not having a chance at a ring anymore, after the regular season they just had, how could he be happy and motivated to play for the Raps next year?

Sign an old FA centre for this season and deal Bargnani. JV will be over before we even know it.

BC

A lot of respect to BC for using the pick to get a piece that the franchise can hopefully cherish for years, at the toughest position to fill in the draft.

Or if he trades down for two solid picks, one of which includes Knight, I would be happy as well.

Really happy with this pick

Let’s face it, Raps weren’t getting into the dance next year anyways. Now, Val grows overseas for a year, Dinos go back in lottery next year, a deep draft at that, and team makes a big jump year after next.

Guys still need at least a year to adjust from Euro ball to NBA. So no real impact for a few years from JV.

by crazyj on Jun 23, 2011 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Knight looks sad

Now he has something to prove.

Doesn’t say a lot that Knight went 8th and Kemba will go lower and they were the two picks we thought we would be choosing from.

I feel so good about this pick (JV) because it shows that we are trying to build for the future and we are not taking short cuts.

How can acquire a pick to take Kemba. I hated him at 5 but I like the pick if it is in the mid teens and if BC could end the draft with Kemba and JV, I would be very impressed.

That’s the one thing that BC has to be VERY careful of. So shrewd decisions in free agency have to show those guys SOME improvement.

Adam Francis - Publisher - RaptorsHQ.com

by Adam Francis on Jun 23, 2011 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

If those guys want to see improvement in the Raptors then they should play better. This coming season (if it happens) should be all about internal improvement from the young guys.

The other way that the line-up could see some new faces is through a Bargnani trade and minor FA signing(s). I would be all in favour of trading Bargnani for a veteran big man who might have 3 or 4 years left and could teach the young guys how to fight for wins in the league. The guy doesn’t have to be a star, he just has to know how to defend the centre position and bang some bodies.

by DW19 on Jun 23, 2011 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly ifyou think about it there are 6 good teams in the east. any two teams to me can jump up and grabe 7 or 8 spot.

even if you go below .500. With this pick and new coach and a older and more mature Derozan and Davis maybe the right moves, wouldnt suprise me if we contend at all.

by Jt Malley on Jun 23, 2011 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Really? So your hope is to make the playoffs so we can lose to Boston, Chicago, or Miami? Thanks I would rather suck another year and improve our core to the point where we might actually stand a chance against them.

by McGateway on Jun 23, 2011 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree i would too next year would be a great year to have a top 5 pick.

Play-offs

Getting one’s ass kicked, even if it’s only 1 series, is good for development. Players need to experience what the next level is all about.

Losing year after year – and missing the play-offs – can be detrimental to growth and mindset. Especially with any lack of a Leader.

Nice Write Up On JV !

http://thepaintedarea.blogspot.com/2011/06/2011-international-draft-prospects.html

Looks promising ! Im just glad he is a banger ,once he fills in a bit & gets more experience we might just have our Center of the future.

Lietuvos Rytas is a quality European franchise that managed to advance to the Top 16 stage of Euroleague play. Jonas was an extremely efficient player, with these averages in only 15 minutes per game:
7.7 pts, 5.8 reb, 71% FG (#1 in EL), 88% FT, 0.7 blk, 1.4 TO

Using John Hollinger’s translations for Euroleague stats to NBA numbers, Valanciunas’ production was quite impressive, especially considering he was just 18 for the season (he just turned 19 last month), and also played a tough schedule (out of 15 Euroleague games, eight were played against powers Panathinaikos, Montepaschi Siena, FC Barcelona and Caja Laboral). Here’s what Jonas’ 2010-11 Euroleague numbers translated into NBA stats, per 36 minutes:
13.5 pts, 15.9 reb, 0.7 ast, 62.3% FG

Jonas’s numbers in the Lithuanian domestic league (LKL) were just as impressive, in 20 minutes per game:
11.5 pts, 7.3 reb, 67% FG, 78% FT, 1.8 blk, 1.8 TO
Valanciunas led the LKL in blocks and FG pct., was third in rebounds.

From SI.com

Raptors executive Bryan Colangelo nails the half-court shot here, as Valanciunas became the apple of almost every lottery team’s eye in recent days. He might not be available to join the Raptors next season, but he can man the middle for Toronto for a decade to come thereafter. He’s a skilled and efficient scorer who can still fill out his 19-year-old frame.

by timboslice85 on Jun 23, 2011 9:01 PM EDT reply actions

Barney can’t even spell efficient. It will be pure comedy gold when Val gets more rebounds per game in the NBA next year than Barney does and he will still be in the Euroleague.

Funny

…but there was a lot of speculation round here that BC would not draft JV because he wouldn’t arrive in time to save his job.

Looks like BC made the move for his club rather than for his job.

LOVE the pick. The team is desparate for a legit center and I think this makes Bargs expendable – especially if there is a lockout.

Was terrified we would end up with Knight, a guy I think has bust written all over him, and was hoping based on the reports that we might land Biyombo, but am thrilled we got JV!

by CamHilton on Jun 23, 2011 9:36 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

BC is...

…pretty quick to admit/fix his mistakes. He gave Bargs a shot at being alpha dog and Bargs puked on his shoes. Drafting a more legit C with two young PFs in Amir and Davis already in hand sure looks like BC is getting ready to fix the Bargs error.

by CamHilton on Jun 23, 2011 9:46 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Really? Quick? So 5 years is quick for you?

by McGateway on Jun 23, 2011 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Relatively speaking

Bargs first year was coming off the bench. His second saw him get more time, but at the 5 where his perimeter game wasn’t well suited.

The key IMO was how Bargs performed at the 4 without Bosh and with the chief offensive role. Instead of stepping up he crashed and burned.

As a first overall pick with a bucket of talent I’d argue that BC did the right thing giving Bargs the chances he did.

by CamHilton on Jun 23, 2011 11:16 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Biyombo wouldnt have been thinking about himself either. Biyombo’s ceiling is higher and he could have started developing him right here right now.

by hoopdaddy on Jun 23, 2011 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

isnt soloman alabi’s ceiling high too?
biyombo is no better pick than JV. just cause he might not play next season doesnt mean that hes not going to be a better player. In fact most anaylsis’ think Jonas Valanciunas is the real deal, while biyombo is, while still having great potential, is unknown and was projected to go lower, while JV was projected to might even be in top 4. the only concern with him is his buyout, but if he seems to be the better player in 3 yrs time, you take him no matter if he can, or can not play next season. besides hes one of the youngest in the draft. i dont know why u care about him playing the in the league so much next year as it may be non-existent due to the lockout and most want a top pick next year, which would still be a good time to bring JV over next season. its not like were expecting to be playoff caliber team once we draft a stud in 2012, he still has time to work on his game. so relax

Wait

Andrea will either put up or shut up. Casey is not patient and if he sees what many on this site have seen in terms of effort from Andrea, Casey will have a decision to make; sit him or live with it. He seems like the type of guy who would live with it.

The only problem in this scenario is that suddenly Andrea’s trade value plummets (from a 21 point scorer to a player that his team doesn’t want). Until Andrea goes, I wish the rest of the league to see him in the best light possible.

Bargs will be here, and Amir could be moved for SF / PG / Bench help.

4 Bigs – 3 defensive types & 1 offensive – means that value in a trade (if you want to get something decent back) suggests good return value for a guy like Amir with a decent contract. Perfect option for a Contending team needing a hustling Big off the Bench, who brings defense (and some scoring), and who’s not an enigma at the FT line. Trade deadline bait – for a draft pick or role player that fits another spot in Raptor line-up.

More i read more im liking this pick !

Jonas Valanciunas: 6’11", 240lbs, Lietuvos Rytas, 19 yrs old

Jonas is a project which could potentially take 2-3 years to develop, but the risk is minimal. Very solid at finishing around the basket, on putbacks, dump-off passes, or the pick & roll. Does not have a good post game, where you can dump the ball into him and let him attack one-on-one, but has shown both growth and promise in that area, and should only improve. Does not have an away from the basket, or face up game at this time. However, he shoots an extremely impressive 91% from the free throw line, with above average shooting machanics, which leads many to believe it is only a matter of time until he becomes a threat away from the basket.

Jonas will be able to contribute immediately on the defensive end, and on the glass. There are not many centers in the NBA with his combination of size, athletic ability, fluidity, and motor. He still needs to add strength, which will negate some of his effect at this level until he grows into his body, but only recently turned 19, and is beginning to fill out.

The NBA player he reminds most of is Noah. Both are extremely active around the basket, on both ends of the floor, bring many intangibles to the court, yet don’t contribute much offensively unless it is a putback, or a dump-off in the paint. However, Jonas has great hands, and will be more of a pick & roll threat than Noah.

Another player Jonas is commonly compared to is Biedrins. Both are active around the basket, just like Noah, contest/alter shots, and can finish in the paint. That is where the comparisons end, as Jonas has much more upside than Biedrins on the offensive end. Again, Jonas shoots 91% from the free throw line, while Biedrens is lucky to hit 40%.

Most likely, you will see an Asik type contribution from Jonas as a rookie, unless he is drafted by a team which can’t afford to bring him off the bench. He will contribute more than Asik on the offensive end, and is much more comfortable being on the receiving end of passes than Asik.

In 5 years, Jonas has the potential to be a top 10 center, above average defender and rebounder, while finishing more than 50% of his FGA.

Numbers in prime: 13-15ppg, 8-10 rpg, 1.8-2.5 bpg

were always trying to get more players in the draft, because we always hope theyre going to be good. take for example soloman alabi from last draft, most were excited to have drafted him and traded a future 2nd for him, but nobody talks about him anymore. i know its fun make changes and getting new players but the rest of the players in the draft seem kinda…ehh. dont make a trade for the sake of making a trade. this draft is weak, i thought we all agreed but some here are being so critical of bc because he took the lithuanian over the congo man or even the sg in the pgs body, or are screaming for him to make a trade. next year at this time, most of those rookies arent even going to make much of an impact in the league and then were on to get overly excited again for the new draft class. actually its ok to next season cause thats where the real talent is

by tea time on Jun 23, 2011 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

Alabi

was apparently recovering from a knee problem, so the jury is still out on him (if this rumour is true).

by RapthoseLeafs on Jun 23, 2011 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes - a project

.
But the knee injury just delayed that jury. Leading to a potential problem for the Raptors – balancing decisions for the future with present day choices. All the while, on a BC time budget.

Every year...

Teams get great value in the draft and it just so happens some teams do it over and over (OKC, SA etc.. – all teams with great GM’s). BC just isn’t one of those guys. Regardless of the strength of the draft their is always value.

by hoopdaddy on Jun 23, 2011 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions

of course there is always value, but really how much of these players drafted actually do much in the league. only a few. the rest just dissapear. all im saying is we all get too overly excited about young new players but most just come and go. c’mon everyone is throwing out so many names that bc should pick up in the 2nd round, because we all think they CAN be good, but odds are they will be forgotten.

c’mon marshon brooks the next kobe? i dont know if that was a joke but i did laugh anyways

ok well i didnt get to watch the draft, so at least now i know it was a joke… i think

but still, people are overvaluing players in the draft, and that no joke

well..

in this draft if we could have snagged a 2’nd pick in the top 20 or so we would have gotten value.

Position – and Back-up

  • PG – Pending (Calderon will probably be moved – where they get his replacement is another matter) – Bayless as back-up
  • SG – Demar (with more defensive acumen) – Barbosa backing up
  • SF – J Johnson – Back-up ….. somebody … anybody.
  • PF – Andrea – Amir as backup
  • C – Davis with JV as backup

Bargs is going PF (Casey didn’t actually say that) – but it appears it’s his job to lose. That’s with JV as the “Chandler” solution. Casey equated the Dirk scenario to what the goal is with Andrea – albeit, understanding that Dirk is an MVP guy, and few compare to him.

Wise Move

Valenciunas is a risky choice, but a good one. Anyone after 1 and 2 in this draft is X factor material. Bu Valnciunas looks to have what Raps need: D and rebounding. He’s the anti-Bargs. Given what’s available next year, drafting a guy who will have impact in 2-3 years makes sense. This was a reasonable move. Hope it works out.

QUOTE

Recently this was said on SI.COM

One executive believes the 18-year-old Valanciunas, a 6-11, 240-pound center with the Lithuanian club Lietuvos Rytas, will emerge as the top pick.

“He’s the best thing I’ve seen out of that country since [Zydrunas] Ilgauskas,” the executive said. "He has a very good basketball IQ, he’s tough, he can score, and over the last two years he has made the kind of jump you’re looking for. He can shoot, but he can also be a traditional back-to-the-basket center, the way you like centers to be. He’s different from [the Raptors’ Andrea] Bargnani in that he’s a legitimate post player.’’

BC the new David Kahn

Will have to deal with questions and buyout issues all year. He brought this on himself. Teams like the spurs could have waited for JV – but the raps. We needed to do better for both the long term good of the organization, but also the short term. Fans and PLAYERS cannot stand that much losing.
I think BC just signed his way out of town.

by hoopdaddy on Jun 24, 2011 12:40 AM EDT reply actions

I think the problem people have with the pick is...

There is absolutely no short term gain with this pick. A guy like Biyombo or Kemba would have been good in the short term and in the long.

by hoopdaddy on Jun 24, 2011 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Why does everyone believe that you’ll just immediately get production from Biyombo or Kemba? That’s another assumption. And if their ceiling and what they can do is not the same as Jonas Valanciunas’, (ie lower), does that benefit our Raptors in the long term?

Once again, I ask of our fan base, does short term middling success equal “enough” for you? Or would you rather attempt to build something that will endure and challenge for the top of the East?

This pick may take longer to mature, but if the end result is a solid center, I think we should all think about enduring the short term pain.

any draft pick

would have offered little to no short term benifit. If that player did, there is a good chance that player is on route to superstar status (think Griffon)

However, it would have given the Raps another young player to watch and hopefully develop sooner.

by Not so Friendly Stranger on Jun 24, 2011 8:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but that is why teams like the Spurs are better than the Raptors. At the end of the day what good would drafting a Knight or Biyombo do if they are out of the league in 2 years and JV is getting solid minutes somewhere. If JV plays 10 -12 years at 20-25 minutes a night on average then I say he is a sold pick even if we have to wait a year. If he ends up being a bust he is no different than most of the other players in the draft. Only time will tell but saying he is a bust already is just plain silly.

by McGateway on Jun 24, 2011 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Andrea and JV

Well, the clock is ticking and this bomb needs to go off. The problem is if Casey plays Andrea and gets a lack of effort out of him, then he will bench him and then his trade value goes down. 95% chance

If Casey plays him and is able to make him work, then he’s a magician and Andrea may surprise most of us. 5% but it still exists. Andrea lacks effort, and that can be cultivated. Talent is harder to create, and he’s got enough talent.

JV is a great pick and by the time he lands he will be 7’0 and over 250 lbs. with high level experience of professional basketball in Europe. Andrea will either be better or gone and hopefully Bayless, Davis, JJ, Demar and Amir will start to really gel as a young unit.

by defensive rap on Jun 24, 2011 1:31 AM EDT reply actions

Hoops

Relax. He’s 19 years old, he will be here soon, and we will see how we did.

I am high on the pick because he could be our core centre for the next ten years and two rings. Maybe he won’t be, but JV is a more proven asset than Bismack or Kanter any day of the week. He plays in the extremely competitive euro league and he plays meaningful minutes with a top team when he was 18 years old.

Biyombo may pan out and so might Kanter, but at least we got one of the best three big men in the draft and I would argue, given all the data on those three guys, we got the safest pick by far. We know more about him than the other two.

Defensive minded centre who is really young, plays efficient offence and can shoot fts at a high percentage….

by defensive rap on Jun 24, 2011 1:40 AM EDT reply actions

haha

But it’s a new era in T Dot. Casey is here and defence matters.

Bayless, Demar, Amir, Davis, JV, JJ, all have a chance of being great defenders in the NBA.

If that is true, we are finally on track and Andrea can no longer hide from his deficiencies. It’s time to put up or ship out.

No more Pizza

Hopefully two thing will happen this year at home games. We will get less pizza and more victories.

by defensive rap on Jun 24, 2011 1:47 AM EDT reply actions

Beasley for Andrea

Could we use our TPE to do this deal straight up?

Could we take Luke and Beasley for Andrea?

Luke gives us a backup of for Bayless and frees us up to move Jose.

Beasley competes with JJ straight up for the starting 3 (probably good for both of them)

And Man, I can’t wait till JV is fully grown (7’0" and 265 lbs) and he arrives in Toronto to stand beside Ed Davis who will be adding a tremendous amount of muscle mass this summer. Amir as the backup big, Bayless developing into a star pg, Demar all star, JJ big impact player…….

Strange sidebar; It seems like everyone on this site hates Kleiza and I cannot claim to be a fan. But is it not possible that if he is healthy, he can play well? Off the bench? I remember how well he played “sometimes” in Denver and at the worlds, so why can’t he come in rejuvenated and hungry to revive his career and have a positive impact as a backup 3. As much as I like JJ, and I do, a lot, if he flames out a bit it may Linas that needs to step up and I give him a chance to do so. It’s against the odds, but I can still see him being somewhat useful.

by defensive rap on Jun 24, 2011 4:08 AM EDT reply actions

Something Occured to me this morning

What if JV’s selection had nothing to do with talent but he was drafted specifically because the team will not have to pay him for another year or two? We have heard rumours that the Raptors might be transitioning their ownership and teams usually do not like taking on long term commitments when they are doing that. Think about it, the team picks up an asset for any potential new owner but the new owner doesn’t even have to pay for it if they do not want to.

Something to ponder.

by McGateway on Jun 24, 2011 9:39 AM EDT reply actions

Maybe

That might have factored into the thinking a tiny bit, but the $3-5M of JV’s salary is a rounding error in the over MLSE sale process.

I would think the thought process was:

98% who is the best pick? (potential, fit, attitude, etc…)
2% does this save us money in the short term?
