If the Raptors
, who market themselves as Canada's team, actually drafted some Canadians when they were eligible, as well as trying to get a D-League team into Hamilton, or get the Halifax Rainment promoted, might we actually start to enjoy some success?
We've tried the American superstar route but Stoudamire, McGrady, Carter and Bosh skipped town as quickly as possible. How long before DeRozan and Davis join that list? We've gone down the international route but that hasn't work. There have been some Canadians around who could have done a job for us like Dalembert and Anthony, but we seem to avoid them, drafting in the second round guys we've never heard of or not pursuing them in free agency.
When teams often shake up their rosters with blockbuster deals it is quite easily to see how someone who might not be obvious selection in the draft, becomes an immediate starter.
And we might actually have some guys who grew up supporting the Raptors and who actually would like to play in the best country in North America (sic) and play hard
This year we've got Tristan Thompson F as a option likely between 7 and 16 as well as combo guard Cory Joseph. Forget whether they fill immediate needs - just call their names.
In 2012, there is a chance Myck Kabongo PG will declare and there will be Andrew Nicholson PF, Robert Sacre C and Kris Joseph SF .... we quickly could have half the roster full of guys who are as worthy as some of the guys that make up the league.
If this year we start Calderon/Bayless, DeRozan, THOMPSON (given a look at SF), Davis, and maybe a FA like Dalembert who can rotate in the middle with Bargnani, we can then consider moving Calderon's expiring contract for a picks next year. If we find ourselves towards the bottom of the lottery, take Kabongo and then Joseph followed by Sacre and Nicholson. We have a roster then in 2012 of
Davis (Johnson and Nicholson)
Dalembert (Bargnani and Sacre)
We've seen the Mavericks
beat the Heat
who on paper had the average in superstars - maybe we should build a team first and then nominate the stars in it? And DeRozan and Davis might want to stay?
Oh, and the Raptors are associated with losing - maybe returning to the Huskies name, might wipe the slate clean of the previous years of pain.
