A lot of top Canadian talent opting for CIS
Whats the draw? Scholarship is limited.
Any chance of mass exodus of Canadian Universities to NCAA D1?
Don't bet on it.
Some players are just opting for the CIS experience. It defintley provides a lot of things that NCAA schools can’t – close to home, staying local or regional, Canadian accredited programs and if you’re heading outside of Ontario athletic scholoarships. The competition is definitely gettting better overall and really the OUA is playing catch up with the Canada West, AUS and QSSF since they pack their teams so tightly in their conferences. The OUA has almost as many teams as the other conferences combined and with the talent drain in the province things are looking up here and in the CIS.
As for a mass exodus, don’t expect that any time. It’s tough to transfer from any school let alone from the CIS to the NCAA. Clinton Springer-Williams did that to D2 Gannon and he’s not playing much right now and he was CIS Rookie of the Year and one of the most dynamic players last season. Like any place, the even if the talent level is comprable it’s always a time, place and opportunity situation.
