Chris Bosh Article, from Miami Herald. Reader beware
http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/07/25/v-fullstory/1745616/chris-bosh-goes-from-raptor-to.html
Must say this article was rather disappointing to read as it does bash Toronto and makes it seem like Bosh was force to waste 7 years of his career here. A few high light quotations...
"They're trying to stop you? That's not a good feeling -- especially when your (teammates) are struggling. Every night they're trying to stop you. But then if I'm struggling, they're like, `He only had 16 points.' Well, damn, they double-teamed me the whole game. What do you want me to do?"
Regarding being drafted to Toronto:
"I didn't want to go there," Bosh said. "It was different. All I knew was Vince Carter was there and I never saw him play on TV. It was a whole different country, and it was just different. I'm 19 years old, I didn't know anything about culture and being away from home. All I know is the States.
"Toronto's a great place, a fantastic city. It's a metropolitan area, but you could tell you're somewhere different. You could feel it, you could look at it, you can smell it. Everything. All your senses tell you you're somewhere different."
"I hate losing probably more than anybody in the world. But it's just been my fate so far."

so anyone starting to buy into the theory
that its tougher to get players to come to Toronto yet or should this be another example on the ‘ignore that’ list?

It really seems to depend on their nationality
If we are talking American players, right near the bottom of the list. If I could go by previous history, players wanting to leave, players turning down FA offers, guys who were very disinterested about coming in trades and what other non-hockey GMs have said …
… ofcourse if we talk non-american ballers, everything changes. As this seems to be one of the cities they want to play in.

I wonder why?
OH!! must be because Toronto is one of the most culturally mixed (and very accepting) cities in the world. Not to bash americans or to generalize, but, because they’re not taught much about the world in school, they grow up knowing nothing but themselves.
It’s no coincidence that many still think that toronto is a snow town full of polar bears and wildlife.
Nothing bad
I see nothing wrong in what he states. Its accurate.
No Toronto bashing…. where do you see that?
Confirming previous suspicions
I don’t think there is anything special in Bosh’s quotes about living in Toronto. I would have probably felt the same way if I had be sent to work in Texas as a 19 year old.
The more damning quotes are when he complains about constantly being double-teamed and having to carry the load. If you are not prepared to handle that then you have basically defined yourself as not a “franchise” player. The answer to Bosh’s question “What do you want me to do?” is obvious, “Pass the ball out of the double team.”
“They’re trying to stop you? That’s not a good feeling — especially when your (teammates) are struggling.
His teammates struggled, and struggled some more – story of his time here.
It’s enough pressure for great players simply trying to win, but at least a good cast will get you the reward of winning more often than not. Contrast that with putting forward the same mental/physical effort and then losing. I can see it getting tiring after 7 years.
“I hate losing probably more than anybody in the world. But it’s just been my fate so far.”
“It just seemed nothing ever worked out in Toronto. And that’s no offense to them or the organization. It just never happened.”
He attributes the losing to “fate”, which I don’t necessarily believe – but is more neutral than actively leaving because of a fully justifiable reason.
Some players lose for their entire lives, it’s good to see that Bosh took matters into his own hands after 7 years of helplessness.
Took matters into his own hands?
The perfect opportunity fell into his lap.
Bosh made the choice to give up security for early FA, and by July 1 had positioned himself to end up on the most competitive team of any FA this summer. Then, he went out and got himself the best teammates available.
He went to Miami...
People didn’t come to him…
No?
the most desired pair
was Lebron/Wade… it just wasn’t actually expected to happen.
But it did. And when people mention the big 3 in Miami, you are lucky to even here Bosh’s name mentioned. Its all about Lebron and Wade. Bosh being there is just icing on the cake.

I really doubt Wade and Lebron would have gone anywhere together without Bosh, so let’s say plausible pairs then.
The whole idea from the start...
was to have all 3 in the same spot. So i’d say the pairs are irrelevant.
If no team was able to sign 3, Bosh still would have been the one in the first pair, and one of them would have gone off and paired with Boozer/Stoudemire.
We are getting away from the point that Bosh would have been the big winner no matter what, and was integral to the three players joining together.
Yeah I don’t see any Toronto bashing in the article either. I have come to the conclusion that we are the authors of our own destiny when it comes to luring players here. I am not sure if there is a rule in the NBA that team’s can’t sign their own national deals (in the US) but I really believe the Raptors could enhance their view amongst young players by trying to get one of the smaller US national networks (e.g. Versus) to carry their games. Sell them one game a week for cheap just to get the Raptors some US exposure and it could reduce some of the fears that you are going to disappear off the map when you go to Toronto.
It's a decent idea.
But i doubt it would happen. Why would versus show raptors games (for which there would be low ratings) rather than an american team for which there will almost be a guarantee of decent viewership.
Assuming that is a possibility
you can’t just ‘sell’ your product and anyone would buy it. Even given the games away for free may not be enough as other programing could potentially be more valuable (especially since games tend to be at or around ‘prime time’). Not saying it couldn’t or wouldn’t be done, but it may not be that simple.
Its a catch 22, where you can’t attract/keep the big name players and therefore don’t get coverage, thereby making it more difficult to attract/keep big name players.
It won’t be a scenario that lasts forever (I can’t imagine anyways) but its a definite handicap to the organization (as it is a few others).

That catch-22 makes the draft even more important – as I’ve said before you have at least the first 7 years with any star player, but one or two draft misses and your ship is sunk.
This is why I was cursing in 04, 05 and 06 after the drafts and have seethed ever since. It was pretty clear that the team would end up peaking at a low level and it would result in losing Bosh or having Bosh on a losing team which isn’t much better.
But if you make a deep playoff run and leave the guy feeling that there is growth and unfinished business to be taken care of, he’s more likely to stay.
Maybe it is me being protective of my city, (everyone laughs) I may not find it Toronto bashing as much as Raptor bashing to excuse himself for any responsibility. Whether it is blaming it on his teammates struggles or the organization not surrounding him with enough pieces. In the interview he contradicts himself, he says he hates losing more than anyone on the planet but then he complains about his teammates not doing enough and what more he can do, there is a lot more, become a better rebounder defender passer!!! His assist to turnover ratio last year was 1:1. Tim Duncan, Gasol, Dirk and the list goes on average almost 2:1 assist to turnover ratios. It means if they are double the ball goes to the right guy. I think the problem with fans in Toronto, whether we are Leaf fans, Raptor fans or Blue Jays fans we are loyal and passionate to no end. But sometimes this blinds us to the truth, sometimes our guys (Vince, Gilmour, Wendel Clark, Vernon Wells, Bosh) are not good enough to lead us to a championship. It is not to knock them or us, but its the truth. We will cheer to the extreme for our teams because its who we are. We cheer for them and make excuses because they are our guys, and they always will be, it would just be nice if one of our guys was winner because 17 years since our last Major Sports championship (please do not count the grey cup there is 8 teams people) is too long for us!
