Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

Money quote:

"When the circumstances turned against me, I lost my enthusiasm for this city," Turkoglu said in the interview. "My lawyers have talked to the front office recently. Honestly, I do not want to go back to Toronto. My lawyers talked to Mr. [Bryan] Colangelo and I hope that they will come up with a solution soon."

Toronto Maple Leafs: Looking at next year since 1967

just a thought….steve nash and dudley for bosh and calderon? or something like that?

I've often thought of becoming a golf club

by Amacaps on May 29, 2010 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

Steve Nash is my favourite basketball player in the entire league.

But from the Raptors perspective, I wouldn’t do that deal. Steve will most likely play 1-2 more seasons (if that), and while I would love having him on the Raps, it wouldn’t fit what we need to do. He’s a short term fix. I adore Dudley as well, but he’s a role player. I would love having those guys on the Raps, but I’m not sure thats in the best interest of TO right now.

Yes my screen name is WTF13.

What would be more likely?

His release or a trade? I would assume trade because the Raps wouldn’t want to buy some of his contract, but then again, what kind of return would we get in a trade?

They would probably have to pay a certain amount of his contract if he’s traded anyways.

Waivers

Can they just waive him?

by benjibopper on May 29, 2010 11:48 PM EDT reply actions

Sure they can waive him, if they don’t mind paying to play for someone else for the next 4 years. Contracts are guaranteed in the NBA.

by McGateway on May 30, 2010 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions

I would say...

You Turk better get in shape, play a fantastic first half of the season and we promise to trade you at the trade deadline, otherwise I will keep you on such a short leash you can’t even imagen.

by renato on May 30, 2010 1:38 AM EDT reply actions

I thought about that as well Renato… The only problem is he would be playing as an individual, trying to bump up his stats and it would be a huge distraction. Unfortunately the best option may be to try and ship his fat ass out now… and take whatever we can get.

by MAS11 on May 30, 2010 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

moreover

even if that particular incident was mishandled (and we do not know it yet) what about how you habe plaied and behaed yourself in the rest of the season?

ps the thing interesting in his interview was the insider information on how the team was run around #4 in order to please him, maybe at the detriment of result sometimes (my note) ….All this to make him feel like “the man”? if this prooves correct it is puzzling (for lack of better words) for BC and, honestly, childish for # 4 who would come across as a spoiled (little) baby…

by renato on May 30, 2010 1:46 AM EDT reply actions

bla bla

If Hedo isn’t lying, which seems true (since it can easily be corrected by Bargnani according to him) you guys need to give the guy a little apology for those ruthless partying jokes.
If he is lying and the entire Toronto is right, the guy guarantees to walk away from his famous contract. Isn’t it everyone’s dream up there?
Sorry everyone but the real "support" is backing your guy when he is having hard times but fans are the least responsible in this case. The press had made a party joke in every 30 minutes all season so they believed. And if he is talking the truth, I wouldn’t want to play for the Raptors neither. Disgusting management for Raptors, I mean, if the guy is talking the truth.

by entyptor on May 30, 2010 5:58 AM EDT reply actions

let' pretend he is not lying

…that has little to do with showing up out of shape and not getting i shape for the whole season. That would not right a situation made wrong largely by himself. Moreover, if his play did not make hs value plummet enough, his “cold blooded coming out” has killed his value. I would say, still pretend he is telling th truth, play well for half a season, given you already got 10M $ for little production, and we trade you at the trade deadline.

by renato on May 30, 2010 7:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't see how its relevent

whether he was out partying or not. He “called in sick” and then got busted at a club….. that grounds for punishment.

Its not the punishment he is upset about… its his shitty season, and the league wide criticism he got. Simply put he is trying to put the blame on Toronto for that….

by Not so Friendly Stranger on May 30, 2010 8:13 AM EDT up reply actions

So Toronto catered to their best player. How is that disgusting? I am sorry but Turkoglu is a 14 point per game player while Bosh scores 20 and 10. Of course Toronto is going run everything through Bosh. This was why this was such a bad deal in the first place as Turkoglu was used to running things in Orlando even though he wasn’t the primary scoring option.

by McGateway on May 30, 2010 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

not disgusting for Turk

but, and we saw it seveeral times during the season, the best (Raptors) performances do not come when #4 scores 30 and we force feed him, but when he scores about 20-24 and the offense is balanced.

by renato on May 30, 2010 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, most of the time Bosh scores 30+ it is at quite a high %. He doesn’t take 25 shots to get there like Kobe does sometimes.

The Raptors’ problem was rarely Bosh. He gets the brunt of the criticism because he was far and away our most capable player.

by bigweeze on Jun 1, 2010 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

That comment was brutal

He’s a goof, I still think they should eat the contract and sit him on the bench for the remaining 4 years. Hedo was never our guy, a professional who signs the biggest contract of his career should not miss out on training camp, he should not complain about wearing a mask to potentially avoid a career ending injury, and should not call in sick. There are no excuses, the way the media views him is his own doing, and if he didn’t have his head in his ass he would understand that.

by Davl on May 30, 2010 11:43 AM EDT reply actions

he would not walk away

both parties could agree to void the contract and that is ok in any legislation, but Turk would not want to void the contract, he would want a buy out(my opening ofer would be “I am fine if you Turk give us back 5 M of the 10 we paid you last season and you can walk” and see how this would go down with him). Best option: play a good first half and we promise to trade you. Raptors approach (handle it internally) shows, yet again they are professionals.

by renato on May 30, 2010 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

re: Hedo

It’s so kind of Hedo to let us know that he had another level of unprofessional conduct that he could have stooped to. I’m sure this will get the other team(s) interested in his excessive contract salivating. Not only is he on the cap for four more, but there’s way more malcontent where that came from.

If playing for his country is so onerous, perhaps he should retire from international competition. There is no shame in it, and i can’t see anyone begrudging him the break after his years of play for his country. And let’s face facts here, he’s not the driven type who takes conditioning seriously enough to both train through the summer, and turn things up a notch to be ready for training camp. The way this was handled reminded me loosely of Shaq, and his strategy to have toe surgery so late in the summer that he could skip out on training camp. Shaq clearly has much more stress on his joints due to his frame. He also endures much more abuse at the hands of hacking bigmen. The point remains, however, that if one of the franchise’s pillars is playing hooky it undermines the efforts of the coaching staff to get the rest of the team to sacrifice in the name of hard work and pride. It sets up a double standard, and don’t think for a second that a potential FA that prides themselves on hard work would refuse to even consider signing in such a place. If we bend this much for a past his prime Hedo, what in the world have we learned from the Vince Carter saga.

I agree with Renato, make him play up to his contract and we’ll reconsider our stance should interest in his contract improve. The problem, is that Doug Smith is singing to the “a parting of ways is best for all involved” tune. Since Doug (usually) only comments on things that are certain, it looks like a lead pipe cinch that Turk is out the door, if possible before the summer ends. As if BC didn’t have enough on his plate.

What kind of return can we expect?
Remember what happened when TJ tanked his trade value through a combination of spine issues, and channeled his inner Rafer Alston. And we sent him out the door in exchange for a rickety big ticket bigman that none of us (save a few) thought BC would even consider. The worst case is the 2010 NBA version of that return. Google up a list of the ten worst / overpaid contracts in the NBA. The total dollars in / dollars out will likely be the same. We acquired JO at two years roughly…40 million. TJ had two years plus a player option at betw eight and nine million. And keep in mind we threw in a first round pick and a few expiring deals as well.

Some have mentioned Arenas, can’t stomach the risk myself. That prank (and that’s all it was) wasn’t Gilbert being a jackass. It was Gilbert being Gilbert. That’s just the way he is, and in a place where he holds significant influence, his teammates just grin and bear the antics of Agent Zero. Of course, the exception would be the teammates that that join in on all the “fun” because they either share in his lack good judgment or look up to him as a role model. I’m not saying he’s Zach Randolph, but who’s to say that just because he stays out of the paper’s that he’s become a new man in the locker room. I wouldn’t want that knucklehead around the Raptors young players.

by Yardly on May 30, 2010 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Best case option is that someone covets Turks game in the NBA and they swoop in with a reasonable deal (expiring contract, couple young deep bench players). Worst case is they are stuck with him sitting at home for the next 4 years. There really isn’t a worst case option for Turk other than he comes back here next year without any kind of resolution. He will be booed mercilessly by the fans which I am sure will not help his mindset.
Ultimately, I think there is more going on behind the scenes then we are being told. As much as it may seem that this is completely random I have to wonder if maybe things were said behind closed doors that we do not know about. It is no excuse for Hedo to act like an ass but it wouldn’t be the first time this organization spat in a players face.

by McGateway on May 31, 2010 4:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Tur(key)oglu

If he wants to leave so bad, let him agree to waive his contract and as a free agent he can pick where he wants to go and make a new deal. I’ll bet it’d be nowhere near what Toronto signed him for.
Personally I don’t think the Turkey ever wanted to be in Toronto but for $55 million he was ready to waste a year and then ask for a trade to the city he really wanted to go to.
If CoAngelo even thinks of trading the big Turkey while eating some of his contract, he should be fired on the spot. As for the Turk, give up the contract, play like you mean it or sit on the end of the bench. You’re a grown man, try acting like you don’t need a bomb to motivate you.
Same with a sign and trade for Bosh. I say screw you to both of the malcontents. Bosh can sign for less than Toronto can pay with another team and I say thanks for the memories but don’t let the door hit you on the ass on the way out. We don’t need replacement scrub that we’re stuck paying big bucks to.

by Old Melon on May 30, 2010 12:08 PM EDT reply actions

Why would he waive his contract when he can sit at home eating pizza and drinking sprite at 10 mil per season? This is actually a prime example of what the owners are looking at changing next year in a lockout. Guaranteed contracts have run their course in the NBA and I imagine that the owners are going to fight to get some changes made.

by McGateway on May 31, 2010 4:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Trade won't be coming anytime soon....

I don’t think Turk will be traded until after all the free agent dust settles. If BC has anything working in his favour, it’s all the teams with cap space who will inevitably not secure a top flight free agent. Once they’re left with little to show their fans, they’ll start to look at trades and that’s when BC can shop Turk.

In this scenario, the worst I can see BC getting is something like Eddie Curry. Which is basically a corpse to sit on the end of the bench for a season at 10mil.

I can’t imagine a best case scenario… as I’m not that hopeful… but I will take solace in the fact that Hedo will clearly not be returning. I might even renew my season seats when he is sent out of town… I’m happy to watch a 20 win team so long as it’s a 20 win team of player who care and play hard… sending Turk out of town is the first step towards changing the attitude of this team.

by lessthanzero on May 30, 2010 1:32 PM EDT reply actions

look to get one of these players (arenas for turk players to make salaries match) (turkcalderon and probably our first for iggy) (turk for brand) (turk for maggette)

by raptors_run_the_show on May 30, 2010 1:38 PM EDT reply actions

i think colangelo should play it safe and just do a turk for brand because we know what we are getting with brand. we cant take a risk on arenas and i don’t feel comfortable giving up a first round pick to get iggy if bosh doesn’t agree to come back . maggete is the least of what we need a ball hogging anti-team person. brand might fit in nicely with bargs as he can grab some rebounds and play a little defense we don’t really need him to score

by raptors_run_the_show on May 30, 2010 1:41 PM EDT reply actions

We have lots & lots of trade options for Turk

Some of the trades above are very realistic in my opinion and I can even throw another one into the mix:
Hedo
for
Joel Pryzbilla (or Martell Webster) & Rudy Fernandez

With Camby signed, Aldridge and Oden already in the mix as well as young Pendergraph & Cunningham already showing potential they can afford to let an ageing Pryzbilla go. Rudy is always rumoured to be unhappy there so letting him go will have minimal impact.

We get a seasoned back up center as well as a sometimes useful Fernandez who we can keep or use in a trade to make salaries match.

I read somewhere that he'd be willing to negotiate a buyout

could you imagine getting rid of his contract for only a couple mil?

by SPENCEMAN on May 30, 2010 5:50 PM EDT reply actions

ofcourse he would negotiate a buy out

because that means he gets a chunk of cash, a new salary and the ability to select what team he goes to. (and I guarantee it won’t be for just a couple mil… probably closer to 3-4+ mil a year, for the duration of his contract, which will still apply to the salary cap)

by Not so Friendly Stranger on May 30, 2010 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

im not going to pretend i know what im talking about

I just remember reading a long time ago that Marbury, who was getting paid over 20 million a year, got bought out for 6 million or so back when he was playing with the Knicks. I probably have the numbers wrong but that is what I remember reading.

We have a lot of leverage in this situation though, no? If he just wants to leave then we can probably lowball him.

by SPENCEMAN on May 30, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah I don't know for sure

and I hope if he does get bought out its on the cheap, but I also remember Mourning refused to even get on the plane for Toronto, and got bought out for 10 mil

by Not so Friendly Stranger on May 30, 2010 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

FINAL YEAR - PLAYER OPTION

If Hedo voids his player option in his last year, then it becomes even easier to move him. Since Hedo doesn’t want to come back – then barring a buyout, he might be convinced that this would be in his best interest….

Consider that if his contract is limited to 3 years at $9.8, $10.6 and $ 11.4 Million, I think you will grow the pool of teams who might be willing to take a shot at aquiring him.

Fred Jones did that a while back…. but for more altruistic reasons…

by Jenge on May 30, 2010 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

How did that work out for Fred considering he is out of the league?

by McGateway on May 31, 2010 4:53 AM EDT up reply actions

That buyout was mid way through the season (about a 1/4 of the season left) so I wouldn’t read too much into it. There was an interesting little piece in that saga though as Starbury offered to knock a million off the buyout which would seem to mean that there is some wiggle room if Turk really wants out. I wouldn’t get my hopes up too high that Toronto squeezes a huge cut out of the buyout as the NBAPA will likely pressure Turk to get the max rather than set a precedent going forward.

by McGateway on May 31, 2010 4:52 AM EDT up reply actions

It's gonna be a fun offseason.

I’m already looking forward to being sad when the season starts, not because of whatever moves BC chooses to make, but because I know it will be years and years before such an active offseason transpires again.

As for that fat, lazy btard known as Hedont (as in “he don’t go to the gym” and “he don’t ever say no to another piece of pizza”), I hated him from the beginning and can’t wait to see him go. In all likelihood, that means sitting a different fat, lazy man on the end of the bench, ala Eddy Curry. Frankly, I"m ok with that, and judging from BC’s past, he has the potential to actually turn nothing into something, even if that something is Marco Bellinelli (who was not used properly this year, in my opinion, but I digress). What I definitely am not OK with is trading a first rounder to get rid of him. When is someone at MLSE going to learn that you want to be on the receiving end of those “overpaid player + a first” trades? With Bosh going, now is the perfect time to have a total house cleaning, rebuild around DD, Sonny Weems, Amir and Bargs + any good assets Bosh brings + the two top 5 picks we get from tanking for the next two years. That is a team I could believe in, and it’s also the only way to be a really good team in the NBA. But this Leafs-esque approach to “win-now”, middle of the first round purgatory/hell is really more than I can take. Please just blow it up and suck for two years so that we can be good for the 5 after that.

Legomaster?

Hmm .. if Hedo wants out, judging by this recent story, maybe TO is all the more attractive for CB4.
I’ d be surprised if Hedo walks from the cash, can he be part of the package to bring in a big name? Hedo, one of our PG’s, Bargnani, the #13 pick. These are all usefull pieces.

BC has got one more at bat with this club and you know he’s gonna swing for the fence. He’s due for a hit.
