Chad Ford's 2010 NBA Mock Draft, Version 3.0 has the Raptors selecting one-and-done centre Daniel Orton of Kentucky. Ford also predicts that Ekpe Udoh, Hassan Whiteside and Solomon Alabi will get long looks here.

DraftExpress and HoopsHype also have the Raptors selecting Orton while NBADraft.net has Cole Aldrich going 13th overall.

But how much help will Orton be next season when he's getting destroyed one-on-one by Hilton Armstrong? Orton was also slaughtered in the agility test at the pre-draft combine in Chicago.

Star-divide

Knicks VP of basketball operations, Glen Grunwald, a remnant of the Isiah Thomas era, has a year left on his contract, and LeBron James could have a say as to whether he’s kept on board. In the wake of the disaster created by Bryan Colangelo, who also has just one year remaining on his contract, could Grunwald return to Toronto to run the Raptors?

When I read this, I'm reminded of the Dave Chappelle skit 'When Keeping It Real Goes Wrong': According to a probable cause affidavit, a trusted police informant identified Memphis Grizzlies player Zach Randolph as a major marijuana supplier in Indianapolis.

Can't or Shouldn't pass on these guys....

If we get a 2nd Rounder, why not throw the dice on:

1. Artsiom Parakhouski © – This guy is a BEAST – and he might play well with Bargs or Amir

2. Luke Harangody (small PF) – We have a spot on the roster for a (3-4) and I can’t think of a better reason than drafting someone who known as ‘the leprechaun’ …. go-go-go-dee… (or someting like that?!)

Artsiom

Jenge, You must watch a lot of basketball. Artsiom is gonna be useful somewhere in the NBA. I like his game. He’s on my list of 10 2nd round gems.

I TOOK A QUICK LOOK

I took a quick look at some of the other players you had mentioned. I crossed a few off my list – and thanks for yours.

1. Willie Warren – I’m not sure if he is worth the risk? Ball Hog? No D? Sound like anyone we know? lol

2. Dexter Pittman – The leagues Biggest Hands?! lol…. But do we need an Oliver Miller type?

3. Jordan Crawford – Slasher who posterized LeBron? Draws the defence out, but has no stamina, shot or D? Would you rather have Fred Jones?

I think that Artsiom, Lawal, Varnado, Harangody and Alabi should be put under the RHQ microscope at some point.

I think we either trade up for a shot at Wesley Johnson (not going to happen) or trade our pick to Miami for two second rounders… or something like that….

I find it hard to get excited about ANY of the potential picks for the Raptors. They either don’t have much upside, or if they do, they are incredibly flawed or are YEARS away from contributing. If DeRozan was coming out this year, I think he’d be a top 5 pick.

by Tim W. on May 27, 2010 3:29 PM EDT reply actions

No doubt.

I’d like to see the Raptors invest in a few 19-20 year olds and go from there. As a fan, I’ll take the short-term pain to emerge in five years as a possible contender.

But I’m afraid we’ve probably got another year of Colangelo foolishly trying to build around Bargnani and Turkoglu before BC bolts and a new GM gets to put his stamp on the club.

What does that say about the BC years? As bad as Babcock was in some peoples minds, BC has been given a free pass even though he has yet to show any evidence of having any kind of plan other than “Lets fly by the seat of our pants and see how that works out”. Until BC actually sits down and maps out a plan for the next 5 years, this is what we are going to get.

re: Raptors Draft Options

I see the problem with underclassman leaving early is two fold

1) In general, players are leaving after one year if they have a good statistical season. They are also basing their decisons on where they play based on which teams can give them the minutes to have a good statistical season.

2) WIth the CBA expiring, players run the risk of leaving now, or not having a chance to play NBA basketball for two years. I can see why a player would take the money and run, especially when their stock is up.

I prefer to look at the silver lining. The second factor has resulted in a stronger draft class then normal, ie no one sticking around ala Noah and Hoford. There is also a chance we will have multiple picks in this draft, so the dividends could be repeated once more. All draft picks don’t turn out, else teams would never trade such a cost-controllable asset readily. However, for every x number of picks, there is a chance you come up with one or two assets that you you had little chance to adding on the free agent market. This is especially true for Toronto, since we’re not the magnate that certain US cities can be a for a player.

I agree that for the most part, the players that stick around till they are upperclassman are close to their ceiling in terms of potential. DeRozan was pretty raw himself, but we can all agree that taking a chance on him, given our roster at the time, was worth the risk that he busts. If we end up with two picks (for arguments sake ours and either Chicago or Miami’s) I hope we nab a player to groom at SF (more of a sure thing) then take a calculated risk on either Orton / or a pg. Orton would be an example of the player that would have the potential to be a VERY useful front court piece. In 2005, Bynum was a higher ceiling version, in that he was a few years off from contributing. He was a chance best taken by a team that was already contending, or one that was just beginning a cycle of reloading / rebuilding. Guess which one Toronto is on the cusp of becoming. If Orton pans out, he may well be the last piece that falls into place. If we aren’t willing to take such a risk now, then when? A market like Toronto, with owners like a pension fund, would not stomach extended periods out of the playoffs. They’d start nagging the GM into short term moves, and pretty soon we’re back on the treadmill to no where.

Defensive Stance brings up a good point about Colangelo trying to finish what he started, any which way he can. I think he believes he’s too far down the rabbit hole to turn back now. Especially after all he’s said in the media, which is likely a reflection of the presentations he’s made to the MLSE board of directors. If he goes out, guns blazing, well hey, success is never guaranteed. Trying to start a new approach would likely look like failure, both in his eyes and his superiors. However, recalling a previous poster, I have faith that BC’s habit of erring towards the higher ceiling player will win out in this case. This is something we can afford to do at least once if we have multiple picks.

i think letting bosh walk is the best plan for us or at least he shouldn’t be the franchise pf. hes more of a pau gasol pf a good 2nd option not a tim duncan or kevin garnett who are true franchise pf i think letting bosh leave is in out best interests lets hope the list is just bs and we can trade him to Houston

Except...

then the teams doesn’t have a first OR second option.

you never know maybe next season no but maybe in 2-3 years i can see a weems or derozan being a star play or at least at a joe johnson level. or maybe we will be bad enough to make a play for harrison barnes

I think you are getting confused with the difference between franchise player and max dollar player. A franchise is a player that you can build a team around. He has to be good enough to carry your franchise at times and win a few games for you all by himself. Bosh has done that and you cannot tell me you cannot build a team around him just because the GMs of Toronto have failed miserably to do so. Remember that it was only a few years ago that Garnett took some heat because he couldn’t get the big wins and that was with talent that is far superior to all the players Bosh has played with combined.
A max dollar player is a guy who can win a lot of games by themselves, and are draw fans with their name. They can sell anything to anyone and people in the middle of the Sahara desert know them by name. Bosh is definitely not in this category but then there are currently only 3 or 4 players who fit that bill and are not retiring in 2-3 years, Lebron, Wade, Kobe, Durant (some would argue Paul but considering the debate about who is better between him and Deron WIlliams I would say he falls a little short).
