The real question I have is, what are the chances any of them are legit NBA prospects?

Nicholson is being projected by some to be an NBA prospect by the time he’s a senior if he continues improving. Some people believe Rautins has a shot at the NBA going in the 2nd round/undrafted this year. Kris Joseph is a first rounder next year in several mock drafts. Harouna Mutombo looked like a solid NBA prospect before having a bit of a stinker of a season this time around. I like to think that Olu Ashaolu has a shot because of the tenacity with which he plays. Tough cookie.

there’s probably some im missing. Bala will fill us in on those.

I'm with all of the above ...

… though for Olu I’m on the fence. He’s really a three playing the four right now and I haven’t seen him play much on the perimeter. If he has legit slashing and three range, then I’d say sure.

As for other guys, Rob Sacre is projected as a possible player because he’s big and modile. And I think that next year will prove to be his “breakout” season if that’s true.

I’ve heard people continually say that Sacre’s teammate Kelly Olynyk is also a possible future pro at that level but we’ll also have to wait until next season at least when he gets more consistent playing time to determine that.

The only other guy I like right now as a possible NBAer is Marc Trasolini. He’s a big guy that shoots well from outside out to three and can block shots. I think he’s more of a Troy Murphy type but possibly more athletic. I interviewed his coach for a story I’m posting this week on SLAMonline and he seems to think so as well if he continues to work.

Ray, what happens to players who were solid in college, but not good enough to be NBA players. I mean big guys who average maybe 10pts-5rebs-2asts and little guys who get 10pts and 4asts. Those types. Do those players continue pursuing a basketball career in Europe, or is college ball the end of the road for them? I guess what I’m saying is, how good does one have to be to play at the pro level in Europe?

That is a tough question to answer ...

Guys with those stats are a dime a dozen really and may not always make it as pros in any country. I’ve the fortune, or misfortune at times, of playing against guys that have played overseas in my life and these guys were either fundamentally solid (like Larry Bird), freakishly athletics or both. And these guys weren’t even stars in the CIS let alone in the NCAA so the talent needed to play overseas has to be very high. But at the same time, numbers aren’t always the deciding factor. There are the intangibles that people love to talk about like can he adapt to the system, can he cope with being in a new country, is he a clubhouse cancer, etc. Some of the longest serving guys in the foreign leagues may not have been stars in college at all but were able to handle all the things that came with the life of an import. The bottom line is that guys who go overseas have to be able to play at a high level but that will only get you a look. The individual player themself will be the determining factor in the end. Think of Canada Basketball vet Rowan Barrett. A long career in France but did not star on the great St John’s teams of the early 90s that featured Felipe Lopez and Zendon Hamilton, both of whom spent time in the League. I could rattle off a few more Canadians, and Americans as well, who had made names for themselves in foreign leagues that have with less talent than a guy like Anthony Parker. Talent + Intangibles = Success.
