Raptors Rapid Recap: Toronto 112 Golden State 124

- Well the Raps are really struggling and learning nothing from their past mistakes. In tonight's game Toronto did almost exactly what they did against the Kings and got absolutely destroyed in the second half yet again. In the third quarter, the Raps achillies heal, the Warriors outscored the Raps 41-25, pulling away, and never relinquishing the lead.

- The Raps starters were once again a major disappointment. The wing-men were badly outplayed in every facet of the game and both Bosh and Bargnani were unimpressive. Hedo Turkoglu and Jarrett Jack combined for 11 points. Bargnani showed little, and Chris Bosh, despite a double-double, struggled with 6 turnovers. If it were not for solid performances by Jose Calderon and Amir Johnson the Raps would have lost by 20+.

- There are lots of concerns for this team but clearly the number one concern has to be the perimeter defense. The Raps did not defend at all tonight. The defense was so bad it left Jack Armstrong begging the Raps to dress Marcus Banks against the Trailblazers. Monta Ellis and Steph Curry absolutely destroyed the Raps tonight - combined they had 66 points and 10 threes. Curry, in particular, was just unbelievable. He is a joy to watch and just an excellent young player.

- The Raps never really had a chance in this game as they seemed happy to play at a pace that readily favoured the Warriors. Although they did outscore the Warriors in the paint they turned the ball over way too often (16) and allowed a lesser team dictate the outcome. Outside of Monta Ellis, Steph Curry and Corey Maggette the Warriors are essentially a D-League team. I mean Anthony Tolliver played 39 minutes.

- Also playing into the loss? The Raps were outrebounded by a very undersized Warriors team. The Warriors also did their rebounding damage on the offensive end with 18 offensive rebounds. This is just another indication of how badly the Raps played tonight.

- So what now? There are a lot more questions than answers. Tomorrow night in Portland doesn't look to be much fun and a loss there and the Raps are BELOW .500.

- Get the feeling things are going to end badly this season?

Hey wait a minute! I have been asking to see more of Marcus Banks for a while now.

We all new going into this season that apart from the esteemed Antoine Wright our perimiter D was going to resemble a sh*t sandwich. Then came the nice surprise of seeing Marcus Banks perform.

And before we hang our Bigs and Jose out to dry (good luck); why don’t we start Banks and Jack………….. or Banks and Weems…..

Bargs

At one point in the 4th, Bargnani, after calling for the ball on numerous occasions, saw Jose swing it around in the opposite direction, and dropped his arms in absolute frustration. I think it’s better that this all be revealed now, so that a proper assessment can be done to correct issues in the summer.

Calderon and Bargnani have serious chemistry issues, which may have existed for a while and it manifests itself on the court far too often to the detriment of the team. Jose likes Amir, so he feeds him the ball, He likes Chris so she feeds him the ball, but he doesn’t like Andrea and only gets him the ball when there is no one else or he’s instructed to by the bench (not often enough)

What’s happening with Bargnani might only be corrected if Calderon is traded.

1. Bosh is not resilient, makes poor decisions with the ball, and is not a reliable piece around which to build a legitimate contending team. Too often, workmen type (and in tonight’s case D-League call-up) players can affect his game to the point of his having no real impact. He lacks the intangibles and smarts for the game that translate into championship calibre contributors. There is no need to invest max money in his type of contribution.

2. Amir Johnson being groomed to take Chris’s spot as the starting 4 may not be a bad idea at all because Amir plays a more complete game on both ends. That is why Bosh’s absence was such a wasted opportunity in that Johnson wasn’t offered an opportunity to really test himself as a focal point.

3. Jay Triano is an average coach at best who has yet to grasp the importance of managing momentum in a game. His willingness to substitute on-fire players and his unwillingness to use timeouts to stem a tide shift has cost this team many games and has more importantly resulted in embarrassing losses that might be costing him the room. The next major free agent signing the Raptors have to focus on is that of a coach of championship calibre, or one that could clearly develop into one (Butch Carter).

4. The offense doesn’t emphasize wing-play, so to focus on point disparities between teams that run their offenses through wings vs the Raptors who don’t is somewhat misleading. DeMar could very well develop into an effective wing but he needs a coach with the appropriate foresight.

What we’re lacking is that legitimate, reliable 3 point threat from the wing. Strangely, the Reggie Evans for Kapono trade may have been a mistake.

5. This team should not be afraid to invest in rough character players whose on-court contribution might come with a little malcontent.

6. Talent is being wasted on this team. Coaching is the issue.

for real ???

after that game all you have to comment on is the offence…why not mention Bargs 4 rebounds in 39 mins against an undersized bad rebounding team.

agree about the coaching though.
