RaptorsHQ Intern Competition - Finalist Number 1, Sean Tepper
The HQ intern search winds down...
And then there were three.
For the next 3 afternoons we'll be posting a quick video of our potential new HQ team members as the final round of our intern competition comes to a close.
In each scenario, Jayne is asking our finalists a few specific questions to get a feel for their interests, thoughts on the team, and a bit about themselves.
On Thursday we'll be polling HQ readers asking for help in selecting the top option from our three candidates, keeping in mind the video submission plus their earlier write-ups for us.
Up first - finalist number one, Sean Tepper.

He seems to be a good choice. He looks like he never hit puberty though. I more want to know about the interviewer. She’s pretty cute.

Sorry, no
This guy is out without seeing the other two. For one, his favourite Raptor memory is VC, so that’s hard to take and then to make it worse, it’s not even what happened in a game but instead in the slam dunk competition. That upsets me as a fan. Would you talk about who hit a home run in the all star game as the highlight of a season neverless an entire franchise? No. Then how can you mention that has your favourite memory of the entire franchise? Crazy.
And then if he could be anybody on the team he wants to be the guy who doesn’t have to play much? Not very ambitious.
The Raptors were down by 25 halfway through the third quarter last game and won…maybe that would be a better answer for your fondest, and most recent memory. Or do you remember the last second shot against Washington? Or do you remember that Tracy should/could of won that slam dunk contest but Vince had already won over the crowd and Tracy was unfairly overlooked? Look at the tape, it was close. Just saying…
That was not a Raptor moment you fool, that was a VC moment and it’s indicative of his character that it happened at the allstar game and was an individual accomplishment and not one achieved by a team. That is VC. My favourite VC moment was watching him be horrible in the playoffs and for Orlando fans to have wished they had Hedo back….hahaha. Because I am a real Raptors fan, I don’t like VC or Hedo. Sorry buddy, your video made me think you know nothing about the team or basketball.
Not very well argued
Look I’m not the biggest Vince Carter fan, but this guy’s answer was not as bad as you are making it out to be. If he would have just said Vince carter at the dunk contest then that would have been a bad answer, but he follows it up by saying that it was his favorite moment because it is what really got him into Raptors basketball. A lot of people become to anti-carter and forget that he was the first real Raptors superstar and that he brought a lot of attention to a team that nobody outside of Toronto really paid much attention too. This guy looks really young, and he must have been way younger when he watched the dunk competition almost 11 years ago so I can’t fault his favourite memory for being of Carter at the dunk contest because I think we can all agree that the moment that we found a love for pro basketball stands out above all others. Now don’t get me wrong, I hate Carter as much as the next person but apparently so does this guy by saying how he stabbed the city in the back. While he was a jerk later on VC was amazing for a majority of his time here and because you are a “real” Raptors fan I’m willing to bet my money that you had a Carter jersey once upon a time ago but I’m not going to chastise you for being a Carter fan once upon a time ago.
Oh and the Peja comment was hilarious, If I was to be the jockstrap of a player I would also chose a player that didn’t play much. Call me crazy Defensive Rap but I don’t like the smell or taste of ball sweat. just saying.
Agreed. If you can honestly think of another player in the short history of the Raptors who did things that made you jump out of your seat, then by all means rank them ahead of Vince Carter. But even the douchebaggery towards the end of Carter’s tenure in Toronto can’t erase the fact that he was a dynamic player who put the Raptors on the map early in his career.
Basically, this current squad would need Blake Griffin at PF in order to have a player who could do anything in the realm of Carter.

Carter comment
Look, I am not saying Vince wasn’t important or that his favourite moment couldn’t have been a VC moment, it could have, he had lots of them in Toronto. But to choose an allstar moment and not a game in my opinion is awful and I can’t think of another franchise in professional sports that would list a three point shoot out, or home run derby or whatever individual moment at a festival as their greatest moment as a team in their history. You can disagree if you like but I thought their playoff run and even their loss against Philly in the playoffs was their greatest moments and VC was the centre of all that, but it was in meaningful games.
The rest of his answers were ok, but not great. He’s ok, but not great. That’s my opinion based on a quick clip I saw of him answering three simple questions. The next guy is way better, in my opinion.

Nicely done.
Very good opinions, shows that he really does know what he’s talking about. That’s what you should be looking for here: Sure some others can talk a lot, but if you ramble on about things that have no reference, it really doesn’t make a difference if you good or not. Good job!
This is the candidate for the job. The Vince Carter comment is being totally blown out of proportion by one of the posters on here. The moment is something meaningful, and not just an obvious favourite moment that applies to most Raptors fans (mo-pete chuck to win, etc.). This is something that represents how his passion for the Raptors began, and how it started his love for basketball. With regards to the jock strap comment, it was witty and spontaneous, something that reporters NEED (MUST BE SPONTANEOUS….the other candidate I saw today took a long time to answer his questions…Intern 1 did this much better).
I believe that that previous point comes from Intern 1s experience in journalism. He has likely covered many sporting events and has interviewed players and coaches afterwards, and is very familiar with the journalism surrounding. This is in contrast to the 2nd candidate, who isn’t even in journalism, let alone, the best journalism school in Canada. Right now, candidate 1 is the best for the job. I’d love to see more of this finalist on RHQ…
Candidate number 2 here: While I may not be in journalism school at the moment that doesn’t necessarily mean I have no experience in the field.
And in regards to the jockstrap question, I didn’t hear her properly when asked, hence the clarification.
Best of luck to all the potential interns

Reggie Evans
A true fan loves the grinders. Gotta give this guy props – he was honest about VC. This looks like a sports junkie if i’ve ever seen one. Love for sports + journalism background = the man for the job.
The one thing i disagree with: Peja jockstrap. The obvious choice would have to be Joey Dorsey, but only because he REALLY barely ever makes it off the bench!!
sweet job
this guy definitely gets my vote as raptors hq intern. his answers were quick and honest, showing he is a true fan who knows his stuff about canada’s 2nd favourite basketball team (the deceased montreal matrix of the ABA being the first of course).
in regards to the whole VC-slam-dunk-as-his-favourite-moment argument, honestly as much as we all hate VC, that was an incredible moment and is definitely the one i remember most given that i’m probably around the same age as this guy and also grew up with the carter-era raptors as my team.
also anyone who says that their greatest memory of the raps is when they came back from 25 and won in a game played LAST WEEK pretty much tells me they have very little frame of reference and that they have not been a fan for a long time….
finally, great answer with the peja thing, i agree with ndamukong that sports reporters NEED to be spontaneous (and if they are funny too, that’s an added bonus) and this guy appears to have both, well done sir
even though i haven’t seen the third finalist yet, candidate 1 is definitely my pick for the job right now
not a new fan
I don’t think allstar game moments for individual players, should be considered the greatest moment in a franchises history. VC, who I do not like, had a lot of memorable moments on the court. OUR franchises greatest moment was VC’s allstar dunk? I just can’t agree with that as a sports fan. Maybe when he had some of the most potent offensive games the Raptors have ever seen, that would be an answer I could support.
His worst moment though, if you recall was when he chose to shoot a fadeaway jumper just inside the threepoint line on the left elbow with time left to drive the basket in game seven against Philadelphia. After he had taken a personal trip on the day of the game to be at his graduation at UNC. Oh well, we move on.
I remember Mighty Mouse as one of my favourite players, so I don’t know how referencing a recent event means I am ignorant of the past. It was just the biggest comeback we have ever had and I thought it was interesting it just happened, and this guy wants to talk about a slam dunk from 9 years ago. You can disagree if you choose and best of luck to you.

More like Defensive Crap
K Buddy,
thanks for using the comment button to demonstrate all YOUR knowledge about the wonderful sport of basketball, but in case you haven’t noticed, nobody asked you what your fondest memory was nor were your examples of Raptor’s history pertinent to your rebuttal of Sean’s statements. You continuously bring up the point that you don’t think allstar game moments for individual players should be considered a raptors great moment, BUT IN NO WAY IS THAT RELEVANT TO WHO SHOULD GET THE INTERNSHIP.
Furthermore, this isn’t a discussion board for you to showcase all your trivia knowledge of the raptors, so do us all a favor and stop posting selfish, provocative, attention-grabbing comments.
While I know other people have already countered your overly defensive and ridiculously exaggerated comment, I think it necessary to refute as well for the sake of showing that Mr.Tepper actually is a perfect candidate for the position.
Not only did you choose to rip in his looks which is a low-blow amateur way of getting your vote in, you misquoted his answer and completely failed to see the humor of the situation (which is not surprising considering how personally you took his answers and went so far as to call him a fool). Well Defensive Crap, I think YOU are the fool: No one CARES if you are a “true” Raptors fan; and if this is the case, WHY AREN’T YOU THE ONE BEING INTERVIEWED?
I’m really curious to know.
Sean’s answers were spot on; he shows that his heart is in this for the right reasons: his love of basketball. I personally know he is a capable sports journalist since I READ HIS PUBLISHED ARTICLE on the raptorshq website, which was rather entertaining and punchy. WHERE THE F*** WAS YOURS? I don’t need to defend his VC remark since ‘Rap Attack’ has already done the honors, but seriously, just ‘cause his favorite raptors moment is different than yours doesn’t mean he is unfit for the job. Go cry about it.
Sean is a talented writer AS HE HAS PROVEN on this very website, and he has a lot of knowledge on the sport.
Mr.Tepper, I’m looking forward to reading more of your work. My vote is with you!

Hey Guys,
Thanks for all of the the feedback guys! But this is getting way too aggressive…gotta love Vince Carter. Not even Bargnani can spark this much of a heated discussion.
I completely understand where you are coming from Defensive Rap and I agree with what you are saying. The question I was asked was what is my favourite Raptors moment. I decided to use my first exposure to the Raptors as the answer for my question and that was watching VC in the dunk contest (It’s what got me start following the Raptors and professional basketball). It is certainly not even close the franchise’s most memorable moment but the question was what is my favourite moment not the franchise’s most memorable moment. I’m glad to see that this is sparking a discussion because part of online journalism is too spark controversy (and get as many hits/comments as you can) but but no need to get mean (the comment above). Anyways I think after meeting the other candidates it’s obvious that we are all qualified for the job so a bad choice can’t be made.
Best of luck guys!
LEGENDARY
Your answers were LEGIT in my opinion, also i completley agree with your favourite memory because its personal hence your favourite not the franchises. Vince Carter was the spark of the Raptors at the time and he was also the reason that i started watching and following them closely. You’d be solid for this job!
Best Candidate
After watching this interview among the others, this guy ranks as my number 1. The VC slam dunk contest was a great memory for me too. Not only did it showcase his skills, but it finally put Toronto on the map and put them on the NBA’s radar. This showed that we aren’t just an overlooked franchise where teams that play us just chalk up a “W” when the schedule is first released. Great moment for me so I completely agree with Sean. As for the Peja comment, I couldn’t have said it any better myself. Ndamukong said it perfectly that a reporter especially in the sports industry must show that he/she can think quickly, spontaneously and be witty. Great answer and this guy is definitely the most qualified for this internship.
Sean
It’s pretty pathetic that you can’t hold a conversation without talking about sports! Im kidding!
Aside from that (i wouldn’t repeat that answer again btw) you seem like a great raptors fan and a sports fan in general.
PS: Fuck Vince Carter
