Game Day Thread: Toronto Raptors vs. Miami Heat
Toronto Raptors vs. Miami Heat
November 13th, 2010
TSN - 7:30 PM EST
Yesterday we saw the battle of Dwight Howard vs Joey "Mini-Howard" Dorsey.
Tonight, we'll see Chris Bosh vs the team and city he left behind.
The Miami Heat should be surly considering their recent woes, but the Raptors should feel like they can compete and make a team worried on any given night. Will we see the return of David Andersen and Linas Kleiza?
I hope not!
GO RAPS!

So I was supposed to be at a party for 8pm last night.....
so I figured I had time to watch a quarter or so of the Orlando game before I left. Raps were hanging tough so I figured “I’ll just stay until half” and then head to the party. Then they were tied at half, so I figured "I’ll just watch a bit of the third quarter. I ended up watching the whole game and was VERY late for the party. Ah well, how many times am I going to get to watch this team win this year….I can’t miss a one.
I’m hoping that we show some grit tonight. Our guys are going to be gassed early because of the energy and emotion of last night’s game, so I really just want them to be physical and not back down or get embarrassed.
And if someone can dunk on Bosh in the process, it would be greatly appreciated.
Brandon Roy
.
When it comes to the 2006 draft, hindsight has been used too often, to justify picking Roy. Especially with the whole Bargs & #1 dilemma. Yet it was foresight (injury concerns) that defined that pick (Roy), and it is foresight that will probably rein supreme. That being said, it is unfortunate how this has happened. Never would wish that on a player.
.
Brandon Roy
From his NBA.com bio:
Is one of two players this decade (LeBron James) to be named Rookie of the Year and appear in two All-Star Games in his first three NBA seasons
You’re right about the knee concerns influencing where Roy was picked. But it’s still an easy argument to make (Roy over Bargs) even if injuries prematurely end Roy’s career. Sad to see that happening.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:09 PM EST up reply actions
If I emember
Even in 2006 concerns about his knees were expressed by BC
Knee concerns
Sometimes you have to ignore the injury concerns and just draft the guy. Brandon Roy and Danny Granger are probably the biggest misses for the Raps in that regard. DeJuan Blair was another case in point (not that the Raptors had a pick in the late first/early second round anyway.

even Reggie is ill?
I guess Triano will need to suit up for playing one of these evenings
Athleticism
Wright, Dorsey, Amir, Weems, DeMar – it’s exciting to see guys on the floor who are, you know, world-class athletes.
I have to admit: Anderson has exceeded my (extremely low) expectations. But there’s just no reason he should be seeing the floor on a rebuilding team.
Perhaps Anderson’s playing time speaks to the fact that the organization has not acknowledged that they are, indeed, rebuilding?
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:12 PM EST up reply actions
The fact that you might be right....
Makes me very sad.
Wow, that was an ugly Jose turnover.
by RaptorsAddict on Nov 13, 2010 8:15 PM EST up reply actions
The 2-7 start should’ve tipped them off that this is a rebuilding year, if they couldn’t tell based on the roster they’d assembled in training camp.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:17 PM EST up reply actions
For anybody else, yes, this is obvious
But, MLSE has thus far repeatedly demonstrated that they are a little slow on the uptake.
by RaptorsAddict on Nov 13, 2010 8:19 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah, the fact that they budget for playoff games regardless of the state of the roster is a little bizarre. That type of thinking is bound to trickle down to the on-court product. Hence, you get Anderson playing minutes.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:22 PM EST up reply actions
34-25 after the 1st quarter...
Allowing 60% from the field while shooting under 40% isn’t going to get it done.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:13 PM EST reply actions
Not sure where he’s at this evening?
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:18 PM EST up reply actions
Dorsey is the guy who should be getting Anderson’s minutes (when Evans is healthy).
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:19 PM EST up reply actions
Haha. Anderson hasn’t done anything to me. I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised by his play thus far. But the guy is on the wrong side of 30 with absolutely no upside. There’s just no point to him playing at the expense of younger guys. It’s not his fault.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:23 PM EST up reply actions
Definitely
And Jay just left that craptastic group out there about 4 minutes too early.
by RaptorsAddict on Nov 13, 2010 8:20 PM EST up reply actions
Not entirely
But, surprised or not, it doesn’t matter – get those bums off the floor.
by RaptorsAddict on Nov 13, 2010 8:22 PM EST up reply actions
Derozan and Weems
I dunno, I kinda miss AP and Jamario.
eyeroll
Slight upgrade
Although, it would be nice if DeRozan or Weems foolishly bit on every pump fake like Jamario, just for kicks.

First game vs. the player who spurned you in free agency
This is the type of game where you want to see Bargnani step up as the “face of the franchise”. Show how you measure up vs. Bosh and crew. Sadly, it’s not happening so far… hopefully that 3 is the start of something.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:27 PM EST reply actions
true but..
bosh hasnt really played good either and at least bargs is rebounding pretty good so far.
So if we look at this as the reverse of the Orlando game, perhaps Bargs gets hot late in the game? Hopefully the Raps can remain within striking distance.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:29 PM EST up reply actions
no just for Andrea
but for everybody, I am sure they did not want to go into the first game against Miami while being on a B2B after Orlando…
I am watching a feed from miami
Jesus how South american Spanish is different from “spanish” Spanish,,,,
Missing Reggie
With Reggie healthy, we actually don’t match up too badly against this Heat team. I mean, considering that they have the three best players on the floor.
we are still killing them on the boards
but down one body… and Amir is already in foul troubles
Killing them on the boards
Yes, the Raps are doing a good job rebounding their own misses! Hahaha.

Tomorrow on TSN
Who does Raptors HQ pick in the semis? It’s hard to follow all the goings-on at Ivor Wynne Stadium from the Southland.
So that’s a CFL question? That should give you an idea of my answer.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:32 PM EST up reply actions
It’s a great look.
Not to bring on the haters, but I’d honestly roll with a Jack-Weems-DeRozan-Kleiza-Johnson starting lineup with Bargs as the 6th man… with Kleiza on a short leash.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:40 PM EST up reply actions
If DeRozan continues to attack the basket...
… he can become a 20ppg scorer in this league.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:36 PM EST reply actions
No stops
Defenses on both sides having their issues
Yeah Andrea
Very hard pick on Dewyane! Nice. And then Sonny denying LeBron the easy layup.
- is good.
This one is getting away quickly
Nice to see the Raptors go zone. It’s not like James Jones is on the floor right now.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:42 PM EST reply actions
question for the audience
how come this team is way better on offensive rebounding without Chris Bosh?
Well, I`m going to assume without checking the stats vs. last year, that they’re missing more shots to create the offensive rebounding opportunities. Then you’re playing guys with better rebounding rates like Reggie Evans, Joey Dorsey, etc.
And, of course, Andrea has been a beast on the glass this season… hahaha… sorry, I had to throw that in :P
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:47 PM EST up reply actions
Bosh still needs to play alongside a strong rebounding, shot blocking centre. Joel Anthony is not that guy.
The Heat would be wise to go after Erick Dampier.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:54 PM EST up reply actions
Alabi sighting!!!
Quick — somebody tell Triano that the final seconds of the 2nd quarter isn’t technically garbage time, even if you’re down by 13.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:45 PM EST reply actions
Wright is 1-6 from the floor… but as long as he continues to do the little things, I think he should continue to get minutes. That block was impressive.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:49 PM EST up reply actions
To be honest
They bent but they do not look broken. I believe they will snap back on the 3d quarter…
I believe this team is building an identity
I would not be surprised if this team will surprise tis audience
You talking about Miami or Toronto
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:53 PM EST up reply actions
agreed
They are starting to look like the team that Triano talked about in the pre-season. It helps that injuries have forced Jay into playing the guys that fit best in the system, but regardless, I like what I’m seeing.
Regardless of how this season goes (and it will probably go badly), I want this aggressive style of play to be the identity going forward.
Just with more talent.
63-50 Miami at the half
Chris Bosh hasn`t exactly torched his old mates, but the 55% shooting by Miami is way too high. You`re not going to win many games like that.
I`d like to see the Raptors close the gap in the 3rd quarter. However, I`m afraid this is probably the game where the Heat shakes off whatever issues they`ve been having while running away with it.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:52 PM EST reply actions
They’ve played well, but Wade and LeBron have gotten to the basket at will. If the game gets close, expect a healthy dose of iso’s. We don’t have an answer.
Our best hope is that they fall asleep and we steal one.
Based on the formula for determining a team’s probability of winning a single game, the Heat have a 96.6 percent chance of beating the Raptors.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:58 PM EST up reply actions
3.4 percent, apparently. Haha.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:03 PM EST up reply actions
well
we are not just on a B2B, but also severely short handed. I like however how they did not sink. Norally during they come backs JC and Barbosa gave the spark…
I believe the Raptors are way better than their record shows…
Better, yes. Way better — not so much.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 8:58 PM EST up reply actions
My guess is they run out of steam in the second half
But I’d love to be proven wrong. I could see the 3d quarter being ugly though.
they could very well
more for the tema’s foul trouble than anything
And I thought Jersey Shore was the low point in television viewing…
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:04 PM EST up reply actions
Well, I`m in the ``Weems should start over DeRozan`` camp as well, so debate away! Haha.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:07 PM EST up reply actions
If we're trying to win now
Then I’d be playing Weems big minutes
Haslem & Lewis
That`s two completely different players, my man…
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:17 PM EST up reply actions
and please give us some Calderon
Jack is going all Mee J
this is why
the raps GOTTA find a young pg to groom for the future jack at times dripples too much into traffic and gets way too many turnovers at times
in the meantime
numero ocho is there, ready to play
Dorsey...
… is a beast. That is all.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:17 PM EST reply actions
12-2 run
And what does Triano do? Let’s sub in Calderon and Anderson (shaking my head).
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:18 PM EST reply actions
well Jack has gon al lmee J
his place is on the bench, the 12-2 run is in spite of him
But then you get Calderon trying to guard Wade (ugly). At least Jose hit that 2 or 3 to cut the lead.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:21 PM EST up reply actions
No doubt. I hate seeing coaches subbing guys in the midst of a 12-2 run… but Calderon and Anderson have continued the goodness, for the most part.
I’d love to see the Raps hang an L on the Heat. I think Spoelstra would be unemployed tomorrow. LOL
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:23 PM EST up reply actions
think your right
if they lose hes as good as fired
LeBron is just too good though. Against a better team, the Heat would be in trouble. Against the Raptors, he can just get to the rim and the line at will.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:26 PM EST up reply actions
Make it 9! And it’s not like Dorsey is doing anything above and beyond his skillset.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:25 PM EST up reply actions
Exactly. That’s why he’s a good fit. If we deal Evans, Dorsey can give us 80% of what Reggie gives us. I’m fine with that.
And again, when you consider what should be a rebuilding effort, I’d like to see a young guy like Dorsey get minutes over Evans. The value of Evans is going to be what can we get in return for his expiring deal?
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:33 PM EST up reply actions
As much as I like Julian Wright...
… New Orleans won that trade. Belinelli has been great for the Hornets.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:25 PM EST reply actions
he is playing great
but i also think that has more to do with playing alongside chris paul. my opinion, both teams won. marco probably wouldnt be playing as well if given the minutes on our team cause we got other players similar to his skillset, and the raptors now get that athletic defensive wing. we win, they win. its a win-win
Totally agree with your point about playing alongside Chris Paul. That’s definitely helped Belinelli. But at the same time, Belinelli probably deserved to start at the beginning of last season and should’ve been afforded a lot more rope. If they treated Belinelli the way they treated DeRozan (playing time regardless of on-court performance), it might’ve been a different story.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:35 PM EST up reply actions
DeRozan takes it right at LeBron
Giving that an 7.5 on the impressive scale. I need a dunk on LeBron’s head to hand out a higher grade.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:28 PM EST reply actions
Julian W for the three
Is that the best option??
It’s pretty incredible that he has the green light to put up 17 shots when he’s not hitting anything. This is one of those times when you’d like to see some coaching, perhaps?
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:32 PM EST up reply actions
IF
he takes 5 shots we complain, if he takes 17 we complain, he cant win with the HQ crowd. Guy is our leading scorer, doesn’t matter if he is having a good shooting night or not he’s gotta take those shots, what do u want him to do stop trying to score?
Take the shots, but maybe recognize that when the shot isn’t falling (which was happening from the opening tip tonight) then take it inside and manufacture some points like your boy DeRozan.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:39 PM EST up reply actions
83-73 Miami
Well, the Raps got is as close as 5 after being down by almost 20. They’re showing a lot of grit and determination against a more talented Miami squad. They probably don’t have enough defensively to pull out a win.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:31 PM EST reply actions
DeRozan-Weems
If you believe in chemistry, these guys certainly make the case that they should be on the floor together… like all the time.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:36 PM EST reply actions
it sure seem that way
moreover they give a different look to the team.
The worry I have is that Kleiza is not super quick and the Raptors bench’s trademark has been speed…
I think this is definitely going to have to be a consideration, and I wuld certainly support it.
by RaptorsAddict on Nov 13, 2010 9:37 PM EST up reply actions
in my opinion, we should deal Kleiza ASAP. He’s going to take minutes from Wright when he comes back, and I’m afraid Jay will start him over Sonny.
Yep
He’d get at least something in the trade market, his deal is pretty reasonable.
by RaptorsAddict on Nov 13, 2010 9:40 PM EST up reply actions
Kleiza, Barbosa, Evans, Anderson and Banks are all candidates to get dealt. For the first three, they need to showcase them to maximize the assets. So for the next couple of months, we’re probably going to witness some very painful and questionable lineup decisions.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:42 PM EST up reply actions
I'd be ok with this
As long as we are doing just that – showcasing.
by RaptorsAddict on Nov 13, 2010 9:43 PM EST up reply actions
disagree
Kleiza may not be a starter but he has his place on this team. Wright has had what a couple of decent games and ur ready to trade Kleiza lol. Maybe if Wright plays well for the next 2 years then sure Klieza becomes expendable.
I still think Kleiza needs an opportunity to start at the 4 while Bargs comes off the bench in a 6th man role. I know that will never happen, but dare to dream…
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:47 PM EST up reply actions
My argument for dealing him...
is when we become good (3-4 years), will Kleiza be useful? In my opinion, he has more value to another team than he does to this one. By the time we can use him most effectively (as a bench guy on a good team), his contract will be up.
Deal him now for picks and let Derozan, Weems and Wright be your wings.
yep klieza is still a good player but..
i really believe weems should stay in the starting line-up..they have get chemistry weems and derozan.
don't look now
but the Raps are giving themselves a cance to come out with a W
Final 6:25
So I think we can all agree that the Raptors’ effort — regardless of what happens in the final minutes tonight — has been impressive. They’ve shown a lot of fight. The lineup combos have generally been good. The team has shot well with the exception of Bargs and Wright.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:45 PM EST reply actions
Ummm, DeMar...
… it’s called a pump fake, brother.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:49 PM EST reply actions
One time
I’d like to see a Raptors big man step up and foul someone driving the lane. They’re playing pickup / charity game level defence inside. That’s not going to get it done.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:51 PM EST reply actions
I’m not even going to comment or name the player on that last one… sweet mother of god…
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 9:54 PM EST up reply actions
the way jose has played lately and the heat need a point guard i wonder if they would trade for him hmmmmm lol
Calderon excels in a backup role. It’s when he’s forced to start and earn his contract that he falls on his face.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 10:02 PM EST up reply actions
aww very true
but on another note what do you think bosh is thinking..he just hasnt looked good at all
Moral Victory of the Night
The look on Chris Bosh’s face as he sits on the bench after playing only 21 minutes.

Jack Armstrong kills me
when he says …people dont realize when they have an idiot sitting next to them…filling their heads with garbage……….. like Matty Devlin…for instance! lol
109-100 Miami over Toronto
Well, you can’t fault the effort tonight. They just ran up against a more talented team… albeit a team that still has a lot of cracks in the armour.
DeMar DeRozan has put together a couple of very nice games. Hopefully it’s a sign of things to come and not a blip on the radar.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 13, 2010 10:07 PM EST reply actions
This is exactly the kind of game I want all season: close losses that leave you feeling with at least a bit of hope (i.e. Derozan, Dorsey, etc.)
by RaptorsAddict on Nov 13, 2010 10:19 PM EST up reply actions
On one hand
The schedule hasn’t been kind to the Raptors, to the point where it would be understandable if they don’t build the sort of momentum that could carry them into a discussion as a playoff team, and on the other, they’ve gotten some difficult games out of the way.
In all honesty, this team isn’t that far off from being back in the playoff picture, consistent point guard play is the last piece separating them from the ranks of the teams aiming for the 7th, 8th seed. But, to be honest, I’d rather be in the Raptors position going forward (multiple young pieces with promise either locked up or still within the team’s control) than in the position of the likes of Charlotte, Indiana, NY, or Milwaukee. Record aside, this TEAM brings it. If Julian Wright can be further developed, Davis shows something, and Alabi can emerge, it’s not a bad place to start.
Calderon was exceptional tonight. If Jack had been even 75% as effective as Calderon the team might have pulled it out.
Miami is not a scary team at all. Wade and James combine for 54 points, but the team seems very beatable by the right mix of players.
I’m almost feeling sorry for Chris Bosh. Given the noise he was making in the offseason, the celebrity-guest appearances, and the like this could turn out to be one of the more public flame outs we’ve seen in a while. I wonder if it will ever get to the point where, through his agent, HE ASKS TO BE TRADED, to a place where he fits better.
Happiness is that which gets lost in the details of its pursuit.
I'm liking this team
I thought they played with heart tonight and it was great to see. Coming off a back to back against a more talented team/refs and with a really short bench I have nothing to complain about…. well maybe except for Jack, I hope he gets it going.
