What do the fans want for Bosh?

Hi. Full disclosure: I'm a Blazer fan. Not trying to troll or anything--just curious what you all think about the Chris Bosh situation? As an outsider, I get the feeling that Bosh wants to go elsewhere. Do you agree? I suppose it's risky for the Raptors to wait until the off-season to try and find a sign-and-trade option for him, because they could lose him for nothing. But if it came to that, I'm wondering if the Raptor fan base would be satisfied with a sign-and-trade package from Portland?

If Bosh were to become available, and if he were interested in coming to Portland, my guess is that everyone apart from Roy and Oden would be available. Would a package centered on Aldridge and Rudy Fernandez get a deal done? Other pieces would need to be included. Take your pick from: one year of Andre Miller, a signed-and-traded Travis Outlaw, Jerryd Bayless, Nic Batum, Martel Webster, Dante Cunningham, rights to Joel Freeland (tough-nosed, athletic PF), rights to Victor Claver (Spanish SF), rights to Petteri Koponen (scoring PG) draft picks, cash. Here's my suggestion:

Portland gets: Chris Bosh

Toronto gets: LaMarcus Aldridge, Rudy Fernandez, Andre Miller, rights to Joel Freeland, 2011 1st round pick. (Bosh and the teams would need to agree in principle to this deal and then finalize on July 1st when Aldridge's BYC status is removed.)

What do you think? Am I undervaluing Bosh? Am I overvaluing him? Would you be satisfied with this deal? If not, what would you change? Could the Raps do better elsewhere? Curious what you all think.

And if this kind of post from an outsider annoys you, just tell me and I'll delete it. Thanks!

We don't need a third veteran PG who wants to start

For an elite player like Bosh, to make it worth it, you would have to part with a player like Roy or Oden. Oden is risky however. I don’t think you would be willing to part with what it takes to actually convince Toronto to trade Bosh.

You have to consider that Colangelo fully believes he will be able to re-sign Bosh, so in order to deal him it would have to be worth his while.

Also in terms of your proposal, we don’t need a third veteran PG who wants to start. The first would be later, especially if you had Bosh, so it isn’t entirely appealing. Fernandez is full of potential, but he hasn’t even come close to convincing me that he will reach it.

I think there is very little chance that the Raptors lose Bosh for nothing. I think he ends up resigning (unless the team sucks down the stretch) because Bosh likes being the Big Kahuna on a team. This means he is less likely to sign with a team with a superstar and signing with NY or NJ would be a step backwards. Secondly, if he does end up signing with another team, he leaves a tonne of money on the table. His contract would be one year shorter and for less money. The projected drop in the cap plays a role in dropping the amount of money he would get from another team. So even if he does leave, it will be via sign-and-trade.

Your proposed trade is Chris Bosh lite, a player with potential, YASPG (yet another starting PG), and a lateish pick. At the very least, you’d need to take Calderon too (because we don’t have room for three of them) and include at least one more decent young player.

It’s not really that appealing a trade at this point in time. Right now, I’d prefer the Raptors to gamble and stay with Bosh. However, if Bosh indicates that he won’t resign, then it becomes more viable.

As you look around the league ...

What do you see that interests you? The lastest rumor I heard of Bosh to Chicago for Hinrich and Tyrus Thomas seems pretty ridiculous to me. Just not enough returning talent for CB4.

As I look around the only team that I see that could really put together a better package would be the Kings. Bosh for Kevin Martin, Jason Thompson, and a filler player might be the best deal out there for the Raptors. I thing the Kings would do that deal as long as Thompson is the only frontcourt player they give up. You can build a team around Tyreke Evans and Bosh.

I think the Blazers could come in a close second. Sticking with a trade with the Blazers, I’m hearing you guys don’t want PGs back. Does Aldridge, Fernandez, and either Outlaw or Batum get closer? It’d be a tough pill to swallow for Blazers brass to trade Nic Batum, but if Webster continues to shoot, defend, and rebound well, they might do so if it mean getting Bosh. I don’t think we’d give up both Rudy and Batum in the same deal, though. So take your pick of the following two deals. Would one of these work for the Raps?

Bosh for: Aldridge, Fernandez, and a signed-and-traded Outlaw
Bosh for: Aldridge, Batum, and Jerryd Bayless

How bout from the Rockets what do you feel is fair?

Yao being the 1 true untouchable pretty much everyone else is tradeable who would you guys want & who would you trade along with Bosh or just Bosh alone?

Aldrige, Bayless and Outlaw but thats reaching. Better than Bynum and Vujacic dont even get me started.

So you want to

Put a soft, jumper-happy, non-physical four in the same lineup as Bargnani? Good luck with that.

Better than Bynum?

Make the proper comparison.

re: options

Given roughly equivalent offers, I would hope that the Raptors braintrust goes with the package featuring the player best able to take on a large role on the team right away.
The two main assets I would look for is a tough, starting calibre c/PF and a young big SF who could backup Hedo and take minutes from him as he ages.

I don’t know much about Aldridge, aside from the scouting reports around draft time and the odd reference in mainstream bball media. Ben R references, “soft, jumper-happy, non-physical four”, that matches what I’ve heard about a preference for perimeter play. If he’s not a fan of physical contact, he’d have to be flipped to a third team. And the yield from that trade would determine how valuable he is as an asset. Let him remain in the deal for salary reasons if nothing else. The young SF would have to be Batum, I would’ve wanted the Raptors to take him had they kept the 17th pick in 2008.

Assorted Points:

- trading Bosh would leave a leadership vacuum on the Raptors. From the outside, it seems like Rudy Fernandez has the kind of leadership qualities that would make him a good (and vocal) addition to the Raptors room. He also seems like the kind of European player that would have more comfort expressing himself then Bargnani or Hedo for example. I question the merits of having both Belinelli on Fernandez on the same team. If a Raptor is added to an expanded deal, it would be Belinelli.

- We would have no use for Bayless (full house at PG), so his value would be what he garners from a third team. I have no idea where to peg his value, since its hard with these Ben Gordon types. If he could run an offense, and make plays for others, then different story, we’d keep him and let him start with Jarrett Jack backing up. However, if he could do those things you probably wouldn’t be willing trading him in the first place.

- Of the overseas assets, Freeland would be more appealing than Kopanen, or Claver. The key would be whether Freeland can rebound and could play some C when he fills out.

- DeRozan is the long term starter at SG, so a player that can play SG/SF is of more use then a player that can only play SG.

- re: Kings, Jason Thompson seems like the kind of PF/C that could be of use as part of a package. We don’t need a great scoring PF, but someone who can cover C in spots and is well-rounded in other areas. Who knows, maybe Aldridge gets re-routed to the Kings, with Thompson and Nocioni (cap reasons) as the main parts coming to Toronto.

In short, Aldridge, ( Fernandez/ possibly Bayless) , Batum, and Freeland would be the combination I look for. And again it would all hinge on whether a third team could be found to take Aldridge, and provide a starting calibre PF who complements Bargnani in the front court.

In this deal, do the Raptors give up Bosh and Belinelli?
