Over the past few weeks, I have seen DeRozan really play and although it's way too early to judge the kind of potential this young man has and how he will development mentally and physically over the next few year, it is very clear we have a special player.
Last night for example, his play on offense reminded me of another former Raptor...Vince Carter (of his first 2 years with Raps). DD was aggresive, really going hard to the basket looking for contact each and every other time. And by the time the Knicks were able to react to his aggresive style of play, he started to make some tough jump shots that he really made look easy...stopping at a dime or pulling up for a fade away. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he's going to develop no where into the player that Carter was with the Raptors, but there's no doubt that he can become a T-mac type player. DD's jump shot is still a work in progress and he still needs to work on his ball handling skills - something which T-mac had to develop. Remember, T-mac came straight out of high school and DD only has 1 year of college ball under his belt. But both DD and T-mac had raw talent and athleticism that cannot be taught. In addition, although it took T-mac couple years to really make his presence felt on defense, it is clear that DD wants to become a good defensive player. He hasn't been really exposed thus far in this season and I don't have to remind anyone of the caliber of 2-gaurds that he's playing against night in and out.
Let's just hope that he gets the exposure he deserve during the pre-slam dunk contest and he can get into slam dunk and make his presence felt.
On a side note, I really hope that Soony Weems gets to participate in the Rookie vs. Sophomore game...if the Raps haven't put together something for this young men to really expose who well he's played in the limited time with the Raps, they need.
