Raptors Release Broadcast Schedule
This one missed the lunchbox links but the Raptors about an hour ago released the upcoming season's broadcast schedule. Some interesting decisions (including a Saturday night game on CBC) and the basic breakdown is 50 games on TSN-TSN2, 20 on The Score, 10 on CBC, and two on Raptors NBA TV.
I'm just breathing a sigh of relief that the TSN2 fiasco got resolved...

… now if only I could afford it… or digital cable at all for that matter.
Principle and Cost
Two important points.
1) Cable is ridiculously expensive. Once I move back downtown I’m going to try and grab HD signals for free via a solid antenna and cancel all the rest of my packages with Rogers. Bunch of crooks.
2) Last year was ridiculous. And the fact that it took the Jays early and fake success this baseball season to tip the scales made the whole thing even worse. MLSE should have been held more accountable for the whole fiasco. What were they thinking allowing TSN2 to broadcast games in the first place knowing the Bell-Rogers history???
TSN2
The problem I see with the TSN2 situation is that a lot of fans are being alienated from the product, still. How is this going to help increase the presence of the team when one can’t just flip to a readily accessible channel and watch? Yes, I suppose they “solved” the issue, but even if TSN2 had been available last year, how much would we have been expected to pay for it?
I mean, honestly the FIRST TWO games of the season on a digital channel? What does that suggest about the status of the franchise? Might as well be the Toronto Rock (no offense).
This is equivalent to an unnecessary economic blackout. Ask the CFL how those work out?
One can’t assume that the existing options are going to be the only options forever, so when you have the attention of the market why not capitalize on it properly by STRENGTHENING your relationship with the fan base instead of weakening it. I would have expected MLSE to make an effort to make the games more accessible.
It’s as if they don’t realize that if you limit how accessible your product is, people simply find alternative entertainment to occupy their free time.
It’s unfortunate.
I have star choice in my building and I currently get TSN but not TSN 2. How much am I going to have to pay to get one channel (my building offers tiered service not invidual channels)? I am sure I am not the only person in Canada who is going to have an issue similar to this. I liked it a lot more a few years ago when the Score carried a ton of games.
