BRINGING BALANCE TO THE COURT

Food for thought. Just how balanced are the current Raptors anyway?

Offseason Outlooks: Atlantic Division | Basketball Prospectus
An older link -- but Basketball Prospectus actually pegs the Raptors to finish four games WORSE than last season, even with the additions of Hedo Turkoglu and Jarrett Jack. Not sure what logic they are using to come to that conclusion?

From Prospectus:

The Raptors? Toronto fans are excited, but right now Colangelo’s new mix isn’t working out on paper.

That’s actually pretty funny. Maybe in a few weeks the paper team will turn things around.

Also funny: Turkoglu will “ostensibly” take the place of Marion. I mean, Marion’s a small forward, Turk’s a small forward… gee it certainly appears that Turkoglu will take his place, but how will we ever know for sure?

Usually people comment that teams look good on paper but are primed to disappoint (do the opposite). He’s saying that they look poor on paper, and will be poor? That’s like saying the Grizz look poor on paper.

And when he talks about paper, he actually means his projection system. Not the usual of people just looking up and down a roster and saying “ooh, aah”.

Awkward…

On Prospectus

I really do not like these kind of projection systems because they are based on simple numbers without context. For example, Elton Brand barely played last year and had a negative effect on their offense when he did play. How did he get almost 2 wins more than Bosh? Another example, Calderon is rated under 3 and based on his numbers last year you can argue that is logical. The problem is he played most of last year hurt and he deserves more respect than other players including Danilo Gallinari who barely played last year due to injury and was a rookie. How does he get rated higher than Calderon? These kind of projections only prove my point that these systems are slanted by personal bias. Gallinari has done nothing so far to warrant getting rated higher than even his own team mates let alone someone as good as Calderon can be when he is healthy (granted, who knows if that will be the case this year).
