Where does Andrea Bargnani rank amongst Centers?
Now that the passion around the AB signing has died down a bit (aleast emotionally for me), I started to wonder what is his true value against other NBA Centers? A buddy of mine feels he's currently amongst the top 10 Centers in the NBA and I definitely don't agree. However if you look to the near future, say 3 years out where will players like Yao, Duncan, Amare, Camby rate and can anyone project where AB will be? Will any of the 4 from that group even be in the league by that time? If I'm strictly looking to the future, would I prefer a Al Jefferson, Brook Lopez or Marc Gasol?
With that in mind, here's how I currently rate the top 20 Centers in the NBA for the upcoming season(and I've removed Bosh as a C for this season, and Yao as it's looking unlikely he'll play) :
2) Pau Gasol
3) Al Jefferson
5) Nene
6) Tim Duncan
7) Marcus Camby
9) Mehmet Okur
10) Al Horford
11) Al Harrington
12) Andris Biedrins
13) Andrew Bynum
14) Chris Kaman
15) Troy Murphy
16) Brook Lopez
17) Andrea Bargnani
18) David Lee
19) Rasheed Wallace
20) Marc Gasol
Go ahead, debate!

Marcus Camby?
Marcus Camby is not even close to where u put him on that list. Andrea is still very young his defense is getting better and he’s a phenominal shooter. He is gonna be an 18 pts. 8 rbs. a game type of guy. I think he is hugely under-rated and that contract is a steal.
Camby is one of the best defensive centres in the league and he is at least productive offensively. If he was in the East he would probably at least compete with Dwight Howard for an All-star berth every year.
Ok not sure about Camby being an all-star berth vs Howard. Howard Avg’d 20+ ppgs in the last two season and Camby has never gotten more than 14 ppg and that was in his rookie season with the Raps.
Camby Avg’d a double double 6 of his last 8 years and 3 + blks pg his last 5 years except for last.
Biedrins, Kaman has only doubled doubled a season once each.
I’d say that’s about right where he is.
A decent list until you stuck Al Harrington at #11.

?
i think there are some major problems with this. i know duncan is on his way out but i’d still take him over nene stoudemire or jefferson based on leadership/defense as well as scoring and rebounding. camby is a beast when hes healthy but hes never healthy. okur is fading off the map quickly too. i dont know where you get off puttin al harrington on this list really, let alone in front of guys like biedrins and kaman. but i suppose like you said there is a real changing of the guard going on at the center spot throughout the league. this list would be very different in two short years i would think which makes it harder to properly evaluate now
Harrington’s WAAAAAAY too high. I’d put him at the bottom of the list. I also wouldn’t even call him a center. I’d also move Biendris up ahead of Okur. Duncan also should be higher, maybe even 2nd, imagine how good Duncan would look if he was on that Laker team instead of Gasol. I’d say you have Bargnani about right (based on historical production) but if he can score with some consistency and rebound and defend adequately he can be better than Murphy, Kaman, and Lopez. I think the only thing that’s definitive is that Dwight’s the best center in the game right now.
Harrington vs Biedrins
I knew the Harrington rank would get everyone’s attention, but if you examine his stats a little more they’re very similar (courtesy of 82games.com):
Harrington / Biedrins (per 48 mins)
Points Scored: 112.9 v 114.1
Points Allowed: 110.6 v 109.3
Effective FG%: 51.3% v 51.7%
Offensive Rebounding: 28.4% v 30.5%
Defensive Rebounding: 70.9% v 68.7%
Free Throws Attempted/Made: 24/18 v 24/18
Turnovers on Offense/Defense: 12/16 v 13/15
Clearly Biedrins is a better players, but really not by much.
4 categories
So going through this process some obvious categories show up:
1) The established Superstar (which I can only put Howard and Pau)
2) The aging Superstar who maybe questionable (Duncan, Shaq, Amare)
3) The above average veteran who’ve been good but not a superstar (Camby, Nene, Okur, Wallace)
4) The cross my finger they become a superstar young’ins (Al Jefferson, Al Horford, Aldrige [though he’s more of a PF], Bynum, Lopez, Bargnani, Marc Gasol)
Aside from Marc Gasol, this is the bubble year for everyone else in the 4th category. In 2-3 years time someone from this group could be the #1 but probably the #2 Center in the league, and right now I think Al Jefferson is the pack leader.
At the end of the day, in 3 years, Andrea should/needs to be competing to be in the top 5 Cs if not the 2 spot, albeit a long shot. But if he is top 7, the 9/10/11 $Million deal is a complete bargain, even in this current economic time! Looking at this list carefully, I am going to give that a 60/40 chance. So yes, he’s the only player in the league that has a guaranteed contract in 2014/15 and $12M is a gamble, but it could be a steal.
You have a lot of Power Forwards on your center list. (Aldridge, Lee, Stoudamire, etc.)
Granted that I don’t know as much as you Raptor fans but Bargnani strikes me as more of a PF.
Also Joel Przybilla definitely belongs in the top twenty for center.

Was hoping for this one.
CBS Sports Ratings: Murphy 78.3, Bargnani: 73.04
ESPN: Murphy 9.07 (6th), Bargnani 6.43 (11th)
Roland Rating: Murphy +0.3, Bargnani an aweful -3.6
Stats
Murphy
GP MIN/G PPG REB/G AST/G FG %
73 34.0 14.3 11.8 2.4 47.5
Bargnani
GP MIN/G PPG REB/G AST/G FG %
78 31.4 15.4 5.3 1.2 45.0
Looks fairly conclusive to me.
