UPDATE
From Deep | The Globe and Mail
The always informative Michael Grange brings up the question of whether Jay Triano is the right man for the Raptors' head coaching job... before presenting evidence that he is, in fact, the man for the job (at least in the eyes of the Colangelos and a certain Duke coach). Also, you have to like the fact that his staff has been bolstered by former NBA head coach and defensive guru Marc Iavaroni.

Delfino

I agree with Smith that adding a big man like Nesterovic now seems more pressing than adding a wing like Delfino. However, I think the Raps would be crazy to spend 5 million per on Delfino (the amount Smith listed as the most he’d pay for Delfino).

I am not a fan of signing Delfino, because I assume he will want 3+ million per, and I do not think he is worth more than 2 million. I would rather give his spot minutes to Douby who is inked for less than a million already.

I think the issue is that the Raps don’t really have a solid backup 3.

Derozan is untested, and Wright is more of a 2. Perhaps between the two they can cover the 3, while Derozan, Wright, Douby, and Jack split time at the 2, but maybe not.

That’s why there was so much talk of Delfino or (prior to Jack) Kleiza.

There are a couple of things working in Delfino’s favour:

1. He’s a known quantity… and his scoring would be welcome on what was a pitiful bench last season.
2. The Raptors have his Bird rights, which mean they can use money between the salary cap and the luxury tax. They can’t do that with any other free agents.

That being said, I have to agree with JBen — the $5 million figure quoted by Doug Smith is crazy. But that’s probably more of a function of Smith being clueless when it comes to player salaries. I think he was quoting a similar number over 3 or 4 years for Anthony Parker.

5 million

Well, the folks over at Raps Republic had a translated Argentinian article where it claims the Raps offered 4 per year, and Delfino was mad because he expected 5.

I think that’s where Smith is getting his 15/3 numbers.

Although it would suck to pay that much for him, since he was pissed about 4 per year, he likely will be close to 5 mill per if he does get signed by the Raps.

Delfino

I am definitely on board with adding Rasho or another serviceable veteran big man using the bi-annual exception because it would be a cheap and short contract – approximately 2 million per season and BAE contracts can not be longer than 2 years.
Whether the BAE is used on Rasho or someone else, I assume that the Raps will end up giving the guy a 2nd year on the contract. If you add that 2 million and add on the money that Jarrett Jack and Hedo will be getting to the money that the Raptors already have committed, the total gets pretty large. Meaning, in my opinion that they can not afford to spend too much on Delfino or they will have trouble filling out their roster next year without getting into the luxury tax.

I am thinking that the Raptors will have around 45-46 million dollars spent on 8 players (one of those being Banks who most people see as worthless): Calderon, Turkoglu, Bargnani, Jack, Evans, DeRozan, Bi-Annual Exception player to be determined and of course Banks. Ukic has a player option worth around a million and a half and then there is Mr. Bosh who will cost the Raptors a pretty penny if he does stay. The Raps will have well over 60 million spent should he come back. So I hope that they do not go and spend so much on Delfino that they are unwilling to go and use their MLE and/or resign any players like Wright that may prove to be worth more than the league minimum.

I guess after all that babble – I am fine with inking Delfino even for several years, but I certainly hope that he is not signed for more than a couple of million per year.

Re Delfino

It’s well to remember that Raptors qualifying offer to Delfino was for $2.744mil, at the end of last year. Although he is now a UFA, and can sign anywhere, the $4million seems a reasonable number for a multi talented player who can play the 1/2/3 off the bench or start as required.
In his only year with Rap’s he had career stats in his 1st real role as a 20/24 minute player after not being able to get minutes at Detroit, & I feel still has upside.

He has been an important contributor to Argentina’s success at the Olympics & Worlds, so is a winner.

Per Doug Smith a part of the ongoing talks with Carlos & Nesterovic are relating to length of deals, and guaranteed amounts, as well as total dollars.

RE: RE: Delfino

Since the Raptors are over the cap and must have at least 4.45 million of the 5.6 million of the MLE committed to Jack already, the most they can sign anyone who’s bird rights they do not have for is the 1.99 million dollar bi-annual exception (max length = 2 years). So if Rasho is coming back to the Raps, he will be doing so for 1.99 million or less.

The Raptors in theory can pay whatever it takes to land Delfino. They could also sign and trade him. I would think that would be unlikely, but you never know with Colangelo’s ability to get moves done.

I agree that Delfino has some talent, but I do not think that Delfino is worth more than a few million – given that it would very likely lead to the Raptors getting into luxury tax territory if they bring back Bosh or sign-and-trade him.

re Delfino

Let Colangelo worry about the luxury tax, he has the responsibility to MLSE to do the job.
