Raptors Unveil Retro Jerseys

Just a quick afternoon post here.

Got a chance to head down to the ACC for a sneak peak at the new retro jerseys, unveiled by DeMar DeRozan and Hedo Turkoglu.  "How short are the shorts" jokes abounded and it was lighthearted atmosphere - a nice change in pace from the usual media sessions.

The following are a few shots of jerseys which the team will be wearing six times this season:

As a jersey guy myself ...

I’m loving these jerseys. I think I need a set for Christmas now.

WOW

Can we just replace the Raptors name/jersey’s now? Please? That look is 100% more awesome than anything we’ve had….ever.

That's not a huge accomplishment

The current uniforms are the best ones that the team has had, but they are as bland as you can get. I guess it’s to be expected from a team name that has absolutely no connection to the city.

I’ve never understood why the team didn’t link to the basketball heritage in this city and just call the Toronto team the Huskies. Just makes so much more sense than the Raptors…

Yeah, a good appropriate name would have been Lakers, but that’s already taken and this ain’t the CFL.

I would have liked the “Hawgs” and have a really good pig theme (better than a Barney wannabe). “Razorbacks” would have been really great except it would be too much like copying and it’s more of a Southern US thing anyway.

One thing that the US colleges prove: you can have the stupidest nickname for your team but if you go all out, it can become cool. The owners picked a trendy name and trendy colours (but nothing to do with colours on a dinosaur) and when the trend was over, so was any residual coolness they might have picked up. Just look how lame the first uniforms were. Today’s are icebergs in comparison and they are boring.

I’m so sounding bitter. Really, I don’t mind the name that much and nor do I mind the current colour scheme and logo. It’s just that it’s taken them 15 years to get here.

What's wrong with Red, Black and White?

I think our current colours are awesome. I didn’t even mind the dark purple phase. I like our logo as well. Thankfully we got rid of the ridiculous dribbling dinosaur. I mean, yeah it would be nice if the name was connected to the city somehow, but it could be worse, we could be the Memphis Grizzlies or the Utah Jazz. Talk about a disconnect.

Also, I’m glad these (Huskies) are only throw back jerseys because they are weak sauce.

Dribbling dinosaur

Technically, we didn’t get rid of it. It is still out official logo, its just red now.

Switching to the claw would be a great move by management.

Oh, and I have to disagree with you on the Huskies jerseys thing… they rock.

Love the jerseys too – in fact, like the black variations that they ended up using a lot more than originally planned, I hope they do the same with these.

As an aside, both Hedo and DeMar look miles more comfortable in front of the media than they did to start the season. Granted, it was a pretty chill environment, and most of the major media wasn’t around, but still noticeable, especially with DD.

The Leafs nation must be rubbing off on all you guys.

It’s still the logo hanging above the ACC

Jeez

and here I thought we had put that embarassment behind us.

by Posterized on Dec 8, 2009 7:21 AM EST up reply actions

Are you sure?

I thought we got rid of the dribbling dino last year? I was under the impression that the claw was our new logo.

I can’t believe the Huskies jerseys are getting so much love. They are white! They have the work Huskies on them! Talk about plain.

If they really wanted to...

They could decide in the future to change the dinosaur to a bird and still call themselves the Raptors. Would sell a whole bunch of new merchandise and they could use the following tagline: “The evolution of a franchise.”

Somebody call the MLSE marketing department. we have a new tagline for year sixteen.

hey guys, heard about the unveiling and i’m just puttin on over from sactownroyalty. just wondering how you guys really feel about these. i like how the shorts have kinda a belt pattern, but i must say these look like something i would have worn in 7th or 8th grade. i mean no offense as our gold uni’s were god awful, but just trying to maybe get opinions from the other side of the matter.

by boffacheerios on Dec 8, 2009 12:29 AM EST reply actions

well

Thus far it looks like it’s 5 to 1 in favor of the retro jerseys.

by Posterized on Dec 8, 2009 7:23 AM EST up reply actions

I think it’s all relative – most fans hated the purple old-school Dinos jerseys that these crisp white and blue ones like amazing in comparison.

Best in the league?

Hardly – but not too bad all things considered.

Wow...

Mightily impressive, indeed! Digging the finishing touches with the ‘belt’ as well.

Doing something unique and making it work on a jersey seems to be foreign in the NBA these days. KEEP THESE SUCKAS!!!!

You can never be more clever than the cleverest man!
