Toronto vs San Antonio: Game Day Thread

Toronto Raptors vs San Antonio Spurs
November 9, 2009
TV: RaptorsTV at 8:30 pm

Here we go, another solid test for the new-look Toronto Raptors.  They catch a break not having to face a Spurs' team at full strength, but best believe this game won't be a cake-walk.  The Spurs are still one of the toughest defending teams in the league night-in and night-out, and still boast a formidable cast under Coach Pops.

Weirdo-Kaneirdo

So no Parker…now it sounds like no Tim Duncan.

Easy win right?

Well…if there’s a game. Apparently the Spurs in-game crew has been working on the floor all day because of a sticky residue left from an earlier cleaning…

…stay tuned.

Game is a go!

No Duncan, but apparently SA and NBA officials are giving the thumbs up on playing on the court.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 8:34 PM EST reply actions

Bargs and Bosh starting out well. No reason Toronto should lose this one, SA just doesn’t have the talent tonight.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 8:43 PM EST reply actions

i agree!!!

the dinos should take these one

by elpikiman on Nov 9, 2009 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

Hi, I missed it, what happened to Duncan?

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 8:44 PM EST reply actions

Duncan was kept out, more for precautionary reasons. Not a major thing, guessing he would have played if this was May.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

Worried about Blair

With no Duncan and foul issues for Ratlif early, I’m guessing Toronto is going to get a heavy dose of DeJuan…

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 8:47 PM EST reply actions

Well… SA lost to us when we didn’t have Bosh and Calderon. Is this a replay?

I like the way the Raps are playing right now – nothing fancy, just taking what’s given to them.

Raps are playing like a D League team

Not being aggressive, not taking advantage of mismatches, and not moving the ball very well.

Unfortunately they’re not playing like they can…

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, sure

Ratliff and Bonner are totally gonna dominate Bosh and Bargnani.

by mg4tx on Nov 9, 2009 9:19 PM EST up reply actions

They should really win this one

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 9:10 PM EST reply actions

No question – this I’d put as the worst loss of the year if they can’t get the W.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

Man… I remember being at Harbour Grill for our HQ meeting last year and watching Ukic tear the Spurs apart with Bosh or Calderon. Good times. Then the feed went out and we had to watch it on my tiny netbook…

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

Good D again by BArgs…. I am starting getting impressed….

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 9:25 PM EST reply actions

He’s doing a good job of anchoring things down so far tonight.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

but he should have helped there, not Amir…..

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 9:26 PM EST reply actions

Nice block but the team needs to rebound the damn ball…and take better shots.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 9:31 PM EST up reply actions

do the Raptors have a play besides giving the ball in at Chris?

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 9:32 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, let Wright jack 3’s. Offense is struggling right now.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

is this a gelling ssue too or is it the old proven tunnel vision? Way to loose Andrea’s effort on defense by just ignoring him once again. BUt yes, he is being terrible on O, is he what? 4/5?

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

what a flop by blair!

foul trouble for the spurs’ bigs is another reason we cannot lose this game

LOL

Guys a PTR were pissed with that call.

by mg4tx on Nov 9, 2009 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

the are really getting to my nervs…

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

I'll keep my finger crossed....

lok at the number of shots attempted by Chris, it is is way too high, normally when he takes that many shots it ends up in a L. Not a Bosh issue but a distribution one.

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

Yep, Bosh is taking what’s given to him – point guards need to do a better job of getting guys open…

…or moving the ball like that last possession ending in a Jose 3.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 9:40 PM EST up reply actions

Someone just made the comment on Twitter and I agree, “Raps playing like 2008-09 version.”

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

3rd quarter lethargy will be the defining element in that assertion

by Vlad C on Nov 9, 2009 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

ok, question for the audience, when had Andrea got his last touch? and his previous one?

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 9:41 PM EST reply actions

RIght there – but you’re right, not enough touches.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 9:43 PM EST up reply actions

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 9:46 PM EST up reply actions

Disgusting

This defence has a LOT of work to do.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 9:45 PM EST reply actions

I am sure.....

Bonner was just as astonished…..

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

They are toying with an inferior team, but it is dangerous not killing them off, if they keep being in the game, the adrenaline will take over and they will be in for some troubles

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 9:48 PM EST reply actions

if only

heheheh if only we were capable of toying with an inferior team… it’s so rare to feel like we have a game in hand, or even another gear that we can get to, to put it away.

by gdon18 on Nov 9, 2009 11:04 PM EST up reply actions

63-63 at the half

if the spurs, without duncan and parker, score 120pts on us, shouldn’t we wonder what iavaroni’s job is?

by Vlad C on Nov 9, 2009 9:49 PM EST reply actions

Um…that’s a GREAT question.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

Halftime breakdown

-Raps getting pounded on the glass 21 to 13
-Raps allowing SA to shoot TWENTY-TWO free-throws

These two issues are completely negating Toronto shooting 63% from the field.

Lot of work to do in the second half if TO wants to win this one.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 9:52 PM EST reply actions

what dos the BA column on the box score mean?

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 9:58 PM EST reply actions

It stands for Blocks Against – number of times the opposition blocks the shot of a particular player.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 10:02 PM EST up reply actions

for example, was Andrea Blocked? was Chris? I do not remember having seen a Block on either one of those guys

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

Wait, isn’t it Blocks Attempted? It’s how many alterations there were on a shot.

positives

- bosh is dominating again
- calderon seems to be back to form
- 3 ball is dropping
- aforementioned foul trouble for the spurs

if only we can get some sort of bargs/hedo/wright action…

by Vlad C on Nov 9, 2009 10:10 PM EST reply actions

And the team needs to REALLY clean up the D. Just too much trust unfortunately and so players aren’t rotating.

typical 3rd quarter brain farts all around

can this be as simple as the difference between popovich and triano? you gotta hand it to pop, couldn’t have picked a better game to sit duncan and parker

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 10:54 PM EST reply actions

This whole team needs to play like a team, and play D. The open 3’s… Good God!

by Frag on Nov 9, 2009 10:54 PM EST reply actions

And I’m starting to not care whether Bosh leaves or not, it’s not like he’s a huge factor in these games.

by Frag on Nov 9, 2009 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

It’s not the offense here that’s the thing, it’s the absolutely DISMAL defense. You can’t let someone like Manu get going…unreal.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

That’s why I’m starting to not care. Bosh is dismal on defense, and doesn’t seem to be a huge factor throughout the game. If we trade him, I hope it’s for players and/or draft picks that actually focus their attention on offense & D.

by Frag on Nov 9, 2009 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

4 point loss

Was my early call…but don’t think it’s even going to THAT close now…

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 10:55 PM EST reply actions

no way one player should win a game BY HIMSELF in the nba

unless of course they’re playing the raptors, specialists in making the impossible happen

by Vlad C on Nov 9, 2009 10:56 PM EST reply actions

How Triano decides to bring us back into games like this makes me question some of the philosophy of this team. This team should be getting aggressive when things get tough, instead, it’s starting to look like this team gets passive and tries to shoot 3s to get back into things and such… If what I’m hearing is correct, it sounds like another game that’s like that…

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

terrible...

Why does it seem like our players are never open on the offensive end… a friggin entry pass to the low post is a frigging chore…

by gdon18 on Nov 9, 2009 11:01 PM EST reply actions

Bang on

This team has so much work to do.

And Devlin ain’t helping by hyping up more 3’s. It’s the non-stop focus on 3’s and not on D that’s hurt this club the past two matches.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 11:02 PM EST up reply actions

This has to do with our guards just focusing on feeding Chris, it is their job to keep everybody in the game, otherwise your game become predictable and you have no other options as everybody else has gone cold in the meantime, not to mention their defensive focus may fade if they see they a e getting ignored when they shouldn’t be. These games are missed opportunities, The Raptors team is way better than these Spurs and they should have won. They have lost the game and they brought this to themselves.

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

I dunno if it was trying to feed Chris

I think Bosh sat most of the 3rd quarter, our most fluid offence seemed to come when we had weems, bellinelli, jack, johnson and bargs on the court… (although bargs really didn’t do much during that time) I’m surprised Bargs was out there with that unit rather than Bosh… not sure what was going on there. Bosh comes back in when he was 13/13 at the ft line.. then proceeds to go 2/4 the last few trips… ugh… Hedo was labouring all night…

by gdon18 on Nov 9, 2009 11:07 PM EST up reply actions

You know it's bad

When the Leafs as of recent are outperforming the Raptors. Wow!

by Frag on Nov 9, 2009 11:02 PM EST reply actions

argh...

When you wish Bonner was on our team… you know something’s wrong…

by gdon18 on Nov 9, 2009 11:03 PM EST reply actions

I was thinking that earlier. Notice how much his game and that of Mason Jr’s has improved in the San Antonio system?

They probably could have made Hoffa useful…

…ok…maybe that’s a BIT of a stretch.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

This loss is worse than the one with Dallas, at least there they lost against a team that right here eight now it is better than them

by renato on Nov 9, 2009 11:07 PM EST reply actions

This is frustrating

The Spurs get the hype back.

by mg4tx on Nov 9, 2009 11:17 PM EST reply actions

Well that's it...

In my books, this is the most frustrating and inexcusable loss since the team got thumped by Denver last year and Mitchell got K-Oed.

Just maddening.

Recap will be up in the morning, won’t be pretty in all likelyhood.

Great chatting though as usual, we’ll do it again Wednesday night!

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 9, 2009 11:20 PM EST reply actions

i seriously just cried

holy fhxjsjhfjsfjsashitnkshjsfh…. i agree with renato this was the worst loss out beats dallas and memphis. poor performance, i know it was close but they just let the spurs rack up the lead in the 4th and was too late to start playing. and whats up with the d? best offense in the nba but also the worst defense. i wanted to slap the sh*t out of manu so bad. god this kills so much. now how am i gonna wake up for school tomorrow. i wont be able to sleep tonight

by tea time on Nov 9, 2009 11:22 PM EST reply actions

Just watching the "highlights"

Seriously, does this team have ANY pride defensively?

Wasn’t Mark Iavaroni hired because of his supposed defensive expertise?

WTF?!?!

This team must be on pace to be historically awful on the defensive side of the ball.
