Toronto Raptors vs. Charlotte Bobcats

November 25, 2009
TV: NBATV at 7:00 pm

After an offensive explosion against the Pacers the Raptors face an offensively challenged team in the Charlotte Bobcats. Do the Raps have anything left in the tank for this second game of a back-to-back? Will CB4 dominate? Will the Raps defense be immediately be over-hyped after they beat such a bad offensive team?

As usual we will be discussing from the opening tip to the final buzzer.

Another key match against a team the Raps will be fighting with for playoff positioning…things tip off in 5 and hopefully Toronto comes out strong.

looking

for a big game from bargs…even if it means lots of 3’s.

by vicPapa on Nov 25, 2009 7:07 PM EST reply actions

Think they’ll need a good game from him in the middle to draw the likes of Chandler away from the paint.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

the bobcats seem like the anti raptors

by tfulks23 on Nov 25, 2009 7:12 PM EST reply actions

Yep, and that pathetic rebounding display there shows part of why…yikes. Let’s go boys, show some grit here!

chandler killing it on the glass early

by vicPapa on Nov 25, 2009 7:14 PM EST reply actions

is it dead on that arena or what?

by renato on Nov 25, 2009 7:14 PM EST reply actions

Impressive

Like that move by DeRozan, nice and decisive.

I hear more noise in third division in Italy… is that an arna or a church??

by renato on Nov 25, 2009 7:15 PM EST reply actions

I’d say more noise for Toronto’s NBDL league team! Wow.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:16 PM EST up reply actions

Ha ha – and IS there a 3rd division Italian league?

nice commentators, quite technical so far….

I think they should go with beli early tonight

by tfulks23 on Nov 25, 2009 7:18 PM EST reply actions

derozan

will and should be on the bench against jacks

by vicPapa on Nov 25, 2009 7:20 PM EST reply actions

Man Amir...

….what a joy to watch. Toronto hasn’t had a guy like this since Keon.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:21 PM EST reply actions

can you imagine reggie and amir on the floor as a second unit? belli cleaning up the second chance points from 3? could be special.

by vicPapa on Nov 25, 2009 7:22 PM EST reply actions

this is what bothers me about jay he always adjust to there lineup and never makes them adjust to ours

by tfulks23 on Nov 25, 2009 7:22 PM EST reply actions

I didn’t think early in the season he did that, but lately, yes, I’m finding the same thing.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:26 PM EST up reply actions

he just put a defensive lineup in against a defensive team

by tfulks23 on Nov 25, 2009 7:27 PM EST up reply actions

G Henderson

I wanted us to pick Henderson instead; it’ll be interesting to see DD match up with him

by Member29 on Nov 25, 2009 7:28 PM EST reply actions

Me too

He hasn’t seemed great so far in Charlotte but then again, has anyone really been paying attention to the Bobcats? Hopefully we’ll see some match-up time for he and DeRozan too.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

They both will have bright futures i think.

by Member29 on Nov 25, 2009 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

it’s about time for iverson. he wasn’t going to come off the bench, and no one wants him in their starting 5. it’s a done deal.

by vicPapa on Nov 25, 2009 7:29 PM EST reply actions

He reminds me of 50 Cent – give it up man, it’s OVAH.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

oh shit!

you sayin’ 50 is done?? the album ain’t that bad. sometimes the numbers DO lie!

by vicPapa on Nov 25, 2009 7:32 PM EST reply actions

You got it? I HATE the single – the rest is solid though?

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:34 PM EST up reply actions

this is were the raps need to build a lead

by vicPapa on Nov 25, 2009 7:34 PM EST reply actions

yeah, I have it. it ain’t bad. it’s 50, though. he’s not changing his game up much. (or probably ever will)

by vicPapa on Nov 25, 2009 7:37 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, tough to keep things fresh as a “gangster rapper.” Just wish he’d lay-off the weak R&B joints.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

I see Andrea posting a lot less than last year second season, did they change the way they defend on him?

by renato on Nov 25, 2009 7:37 PM EST reply actions

I meant the second half of last season

by renato on Nov 25, 2009 7:38 PM EST reply actions

I don’t either but not sure why. Did Hedo’s inclusion alter things in the starting line-up?

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:43 PM EST up reply actions

in the preseason i didnt like beli but kno i cant wait still he comes in the game i should add amir in that two

by raptor king on Nov 25, 2009 7:38 PM EST reply actions

In Pre season

Beli was jacking up wild off balance shots so I was right there with yah. I couldn’t stand his game in pre season. His approach now is diff tho, he seems smarter out there and mor e patient with his shot selection.

by Member29 on Nov 25, 2009 7:40 PM EST up reply actions

I think that’s the main thing, he seems to have settled down on O. I want to ask him this on Sunday (as an aside, we switched our press access to the Phoenix match from yesterday’s Indiana one) – did he find that once he saw he was going to get minutes he didn’t feel the need to dominate the ball so much? I mean now he just looks in rhythm most of the time.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:45 PM EST up reply actions

Nail on the head

Knowing how many minutes he’s gonna get would def allow him to be more relaxed out there bec he isn’t competing for mins anymore. i think thats the diff now compared to preseason

by Member29 on Nov 25, 2009 7:49 PM EST up reply actions

that was soo goal tending on Beli…

by renato on Nov 25, 2009 7:43 PM EST up reply actions

We should try to resign Johnson before the season ends. If he keeps this up we may not even be able to retain him. Hustle is one thing, but he’s pretty smart too.

by Member29 on Nov 25, 2009 7:38 PM EST reply actions

who you got from a potential stand point beli or DD?

by tfulks23 on Nov 25, 2009 7:39 PM EST reply actions

Honestly – Belinelli. I’m just still not a big DD believer yet.

And right on cue, Mr. Henderson!

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:45 PM EST up reply actions

Henderson vs DD

even Henderson seems to have more explosion than DD. I think DD’s athleticism is a bit overrated.

by Member29 on Nov 25, 2009 7:48 PM EST up reply actions

TOTALLY AGREE

That’s what always bugged me. If you watched him in college, or looked at his stats, he just didn’t jump out like a Vince or Andre Iguodala did in their pre-draft days.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

Ugly Ball

This Bobcat team is pretty thuggy. Watch what’s going on down low, especially on the Cats’ offensive possessions.

by Aaron Craig on Nov 25, 2009 7:40 PM EST reply actions

No wonder they’re one of the top defensive clubs – so chippy out there. Tonight’s game is the exact opposite of last night’s!

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:46 PM EST up reply actions

now i would take beli but in 3 years dd

by raptor king on Nov 25, 2009 7:42 PM EST reply actions

time to pressure the point…no true 1 out there for the cats. let’s go triano!

by vicPapa on Nov 25, 2009 7:44 PM EST reply actions

I would want to see the raps taking the lead, otherwise this becomes like the S. Antonio game, let them stay in sight till t e end and hen the adrenaline in them runs high and you loose a game you will regret you threw away…

by renato on Nov 25, 2009 7:47 PM EST reply actions

Streak in jeopardy?

Charlotte doing a good job of closing out on shooters. Raps taking what’s available. Pretty smart basketball by both teams. Need Bosh to start drawing some double-teams when he gets back in.

by Aaron Craig on Nov 25, 2009 7:47 PM EST reply actions

Bosh isn’t doing anything right now. Can’t believe I’m saying this, but Bargs and Amir Johnson have kept this one close so far.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

maybe they have been riding thi horse too much and he needs ro catch a breath? having more people carrying the load will help also Chris….

Gerald Wallace

I’ve always liked this guy.

by Evenflow on Nov 25, 2009 7:52 PM EST reply actions

Me too. Remember a few years ago when there were the TJ Ford for Wallace rumours? I would have signed off on that in a flash, even with his lengthy deal.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:53 PM EST up reply actions

man, there a fast break drill being run by the bobcats right now off of stupid turnovers.

by vicPapa on Nov 25, 2009 7:54 PM EST reply actions

I don’t know why Larry Brown would want this team to play half-court. Oh wait, it’s Larry Brown. Never mind.

by Aaron Craig on Nov 25, 2009 7:54 PM EST up reply actions

There you go Chris

Need a lot more of that. Once he gets attacking, that should open things up on the perimeter.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:57 PM EST reply actions

this is what i like about his game this year last he would take the jumper

by raptor king on Nov 25, 2009 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

I feel so weird watching Antoine Wright play

A raptor using defense? Something just seems off.

by Evenflow on Nov 25, 2009 7:59 PM EST reply actions

On that note – why is DeRozan in the game and not Marco? Terrible shot selection there…

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 7:59 PM EST up reply actions

I think they put him in to help on the transition D but I honestly think marco is the better defender

by tfulks23 on Nov 25, 2009 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

Wright on Capt. Jack the rest of the way?

Key to the game has become clear: defensive rebounding

by Aaron Craig on Nov 25, 2009 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

Wright

really moves his feet on D. He may not have the size to guard most SF but he sure can stay in front of them.

by Member29 on Nov 25, 2009 8:00 PM EST reply actions

Sometimes, I wonder if people are getting played in order to teach them, or are they getting played so this team will win?

Kinnon "Vicious D" Yee

by Raptors HQ - Vicious D on Nov 25, 2009 8:00 PM EST reply actions

I think there’s some confusion on that from the Raps coaching staff as well. Maybe they weren’t expecting to really have to make that distinction this year?

by Evenflow on Nov 25, 2009 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

I think it’s NEXT year that this team could really make a jump, provided they can keep everyone (outside of Banks and O’Bryant etc of course.) But for this year, right now it feels to me like they’re trying to do both…which to me is sort of like trying to lose weight and bulk up at once. Can’t be done.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 8:06 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed, for example, if we won tonight and stole one of Boston and Phoenix, we’d be .500 for the month, which is well ahead of all but the most optimistic predictions. So now they’re not sure if we’re looking to make a real run or not.

by Evenflow on Nov 25, 2009 8:09 PM EST up reply actions

Sorta… I think Bargs as well.

Bargs

That last replay made me cringe. His man got around him and he just sorta stood there and watched the ball…

There’s a reason right now that Toronto is giving up a ton of points in the paint here.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 8:08 PM EST reply actions

that was awful, but most of the points in the paint came from turnovers and fast brakes.

by renato on Nov 25, 2009 8:09 PM EST up reply actions

Down 6 here feels like down 15. The missed rebound off of the Diaw corner 3 really hurt. And then Jose got matador’d a couple of times.

by Aaron Craig on Nov 25, 2009 8:11 PM EST reply actions

credit to Charlotte…they’ve been pressuring the ball and causing turnovers and owning the offensive boards. still, the raps have sucked.

need a better second half.

by vicPapa on Nov 25, 2009 8:11 PM EST reply actions

Halftime Thoughts

-Raps are playing ok; not good, not terrible.
-Gotta give props to Charlotte for some of this though; solid D and exposing the Raptors in their weakest areas – transition and in the paint.
-Toronto’s not shooting well but not playing to their strengths. They need Bosh to get going and for things to flow from there.
-Most importantly, the Dinos need to do a much better job protecting the rim.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 8:13 PM EST reply actions

Andrea n one of the worst 15 points at the half performances….

by renato on Nov 25, 2009 8:15 PM EST reply actions

I thought he’s been ok on O, D…not so much.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

That corner three was sweet. He also had a great finish on a very tough pass from Jose as he was rolling to the rim. I haven’t noticed anything particularly bad on D. Defensive rebounding is a team effort.

by Aaron Craig on Nov 25, 2009 8:19 PM EST up reply actions

Is this a joke?

Tell me the Raptors aren’t losing to the Bobcats at half. Don’t make me regret turning on my TV! Haha…

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 25, 2009 8:22 PM EST reply actions

So much for my point about the Raptors’ O being greater than the Charlotte D…so far the latter is winning.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 8:28 PM EST up reply actions

DD

Looks like the real deal at times.

by Evenflow on Nov 25, 2009 8:26 PM EST reply actions

Two seasons from now...

… I think DeRozan is going to put up some big time scoring numbers. I like the flashes of aggression going to the basket.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 25, 2009 8:28 PM EST up reply actions

Gerald Wallace

That dunk pretty much sums up the Raptors defence. Chris Bosh stood there like a deer in headlights watching Wallace.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 25, 2009 8:31 PM EST reply actions

Outside of Amir, the whole team has been like that tonight. Just ridiculous and in a game where the O isn’t there like tonight, you REALLY notice it.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 8:33 PM EST up reply actions

They’re hanging around, the offense can light up at any time…..hopefully.

by Evenflow on Nov 25, 2009 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

hanging around?

They’ve spent the 3rd quarter falling further and further behind..

by dchoubak on Nov 25, 2009 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

This is like the Spurs game

On the rare occasion we get a stop, Cats are likely to get the rebound. Don’t see us winning this game—even if the bench gets us back into it.

by Aaron Craig on Nov 25, 2009 8:36 PM EST reply actions

If the Raps don't get some life here...

…then they might as well call this one at the end of the 3rd. Very disappointing.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 25, 2009 8:39 PM EST reply actions

Oh my lord...

That play summed up the Raps night.

TERRIBLE pass by Bosh which should have been an easy 2 – no defence and the ball is rammed down their throat.

3:31 remaining marks the death of the Raps tonight in my books.

Bobcats

Today I was saying that the Bobcats have improved a lot with Jackson. I watched them destroy Philly earlier in the week and they looked pretty good. Tonight we’re seeing just how improved they are. They r my sleeper team to sneak into the playoffs.

by Member29 on Nov 25, 2009 8:42 PM EST reply actions

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I think I agree…just good enough defensively too fight it out with teams down to the wire.

And against a Raps’ team with no D…well…we’re seeing the results.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

Points in the paint and fast breaks

Just the sign of a horrible defensive team (the way the Cats are killing the Raps in both categories).

I like the lineup by Triano though — a big ‘F you’ to the starters.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 25, 2009 8:43 PM EST reply actions

they’ll need an epic 4th quarter to make this into any sort of game.

by dchoubak on Nov 25, 2009 8:47 PM EST reply actions

Just thinking the same thing – just a pathetic display.

And why is it the 3rd quarter is always the weak link lately?

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 8:49 PM EST up reply actions

lately?

This has been the theme of the season. If the raptors hadn’t screwed so many games up in the 3rd quarter, they would have been no doubt in the top 5 in the east right now.
This must be coaching…

by vicPapa on Nov 25, 2009 8:50 PM EST reply actions

3rd quarter is a weak link because I think everyone attacks DeRozan. Usually the other team’s best player gets really angry and fired up and DeRozan can’t handle

by PConn on Nov 25, 2009 8:53 PM EST reply actions

some food for thought...

raptors scored more pts in the first half last night than they have so far in 3 and a bit quarters.

by dchoubak on Nov 25, 2009 8:56 PM EST reply actions

Never even thought of that angle.

Scary thing is, if they can just some help for Bosh (who’s now being very aggressive), then they can still make a game of this.

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

I never understand why they only get aggressive when they fall behind big. They’re on of the best FT shooting teams in the league yet they don’t take advantage of it often enough. I kinda get the feeling that bosh is trying to show the league that he can be more of a dirk type of player (my explanation for high number of outside shots) in his contract year. I feel like that’s hurting the team big time. We really don’t need him to take 3s.

by dchoubak on Nov 25, 2009 9:03 PM EST up reply actions

That point has driven me nuts for years; one of the top FT shooting teams in the league and yet they never get to the line. This year’s been better, but on nights like this when the jumpers aren’t falling, why don’t they just keep attacking the rim?

by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 25, 2009 9:06 PM EST up reply actions

It’s all in the mentality of the players. You know Bargnani isn’t getting there… Bosh is there, and DeRozan has a chance.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 25, 2009 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

don’t expect that to happen often.(the 74 at the half) it will only hurt you in the long run.

by vicPapa on Nov 25, 2009 8:59 PM EST reply actions
