Toronto Raptors vs. Denver Nuggets
November 17, 2009
TV: TSN at 9:00 pm
Having lost in Phoenix the Raps look to grab a victory in the Mile High City. It will be a tough match-up and the Raps will need to bring some defensive intensity against the likes of Billups, Smith and Carmello. Can the Raps steal a win from this Western Conference contender?
From the opening tip to the last second the HQ will be live-blogging through out the game.

Ready to roll
Tip in 15 and if you’ve been MIA from Raps news today, well Pops is back, and apparently going to be in the line-up tonight.
The Pops re-signing is a bit of a puzzler though to me, something I’ll be blogging about tomorrow morning. Yes, the team has rebounding issues but unless we’re going to see Pops at the 3, or Johnson there, not sure how he’s going to get minutes. With the on and off Wright injury issues, I’m curious as to why BC didn’t look at adding another swingman.
Anyways, should be a tough one tonight – key focus will be on Hedo trying to guard Melo and Bargs on Nene…

Update
And on the Hedo note – he’s apparently out and Wright is in.

Wright contained Melo last year with Dallas
Except he couldn’t make clutch fouls.

Pops
I love the move. Having these energy guys is such a plus. I am not sure this team needs another 3 with Wright, Hedo and Weems able to play there.
Pops has upside…..more than can be said for O’Bryant or Douby. Think the preseason game where he destroyed the Raps left a bad memory in BC’s mind?

the shots early were from good ball movement. Belinelli’s…..not so much and a really bad result.
Fade-away three’s are for late in the shot clock situations only….unless you are Lebron

would ellis & Turiaf for Calderon & Evans make us better?? i know trade talk is anticlimactic but I’m always looking for ways to improve the team. Would anyone do this trade?

Calderon & Evans for Ellis & Turiaf
high risk/ high reward
Here's the thing...

true but
the advantage of having a guy like Ellis is you can slide him to SG (which i think is his natural position) and all of a sudden you’ve got a potent scoring threat that can creat for himself and others. Then J Jack gets more minutes at PG and acts as ur true pass first pg. I guess there are pros and cons to both players. I’ve always liked Ellis tho and a mature version of Monta will eventually be a very very good thing doe some nba team out there. I also think he’s got more resale value than JC so even if it doesn’t work out, we’d still be able to get something for him.

And here’s the thing, the Raptors can torch the twine — but when you go cold, you need to recognize what has to be done (take the ball to the basket, get to the line, etc). Raps aren’t quite there yet, which is evident by the amount of jumpers they’re putting up right now.

Raptors look like a fatigued team. When guys are leaking out and posterizing your a$$, that’s not a good sign…

Weems is useful but he’s gotta know his limits. He can hardly hit a 2pter so not sure y he’s unloading 3s
Exactly – that last take was his game, not 3’s.

Bargs Issues
That last play was the perfect issue I have with Andrea.
You take that 3 early in the clock and then Denver runs out and everyone’s out of position. Bosh has to pick-up Andrea’s man and the ball moves around until Nene takes it right down the hole.
by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 17, 2009 10:54 PM EST reply actions
Not sure who they're going to go to here...
If Bosh and Bargs sit for Amir and Rasho etc, not sure they’ve got the offense to keep things close with Denver.

Agreed. They should’ve put a bit more thought into the big man rotation tonight.

Not out of it yet but they need to draw on some reserves. Tim Chisholm just tweeted “why not use Pops” and I think I’d give it a shot. Just a shot of energy early in the 4th.

can’t and doesn’t play 48. he’s no lebron.
I think bargs is the big x factor right now. he needs to start hitting his shots and he needs to start hitting them right now. it would open up some space for bosh to operate.

apart from running out of gas, i think we were beateb by a much better team. not to stressed abt it. it was an entertaining loss.
Still time but totally agree. I talked about it in the preview today but I think this is the most balanced team in the league top to bottom. Them and the Lakers in the West if they get healthy.

To me it’s both sides right now. Fatigue on D, and poor decisions on offense leading to easy transition baskets that Toronto can’t stop.
by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 17, 2009 11:12 PM EST up reply actions
The fatigue scares me. I mean, what the heck are they going to look like tomorrow night in Utah?
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 17, 2009 11:14 PM EST up reply actions
our defence tonight was the same as lastnight and the night before and the night before that. The second we stop scoring tho, we’ve got no chance. Hedo’s veteran presence was missed tonight as well.
Hedo would not have helped defensively though.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Nov 17, 2009 11:14 PM EST up reply actions
No, but I think another fresh pair of legs might have helped on both sides.

Hi guys, sorry coming late to the chat, but this has been the worst officiated game I’ve seen this year, not saying it cost the game, but just total BS no calls all night.
Reffing was atrocious. 2 FTA for Bosh? Give me a break.
by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 17, 2009 11:20 PM EST up reply actions
After reading the donaghy excerpts where he talks about how they made calls or non calls not to affect a specific basket or play, but to disrupt a player’s/team’s rhythym, it’s just so obvious now how that works. And I’m not saying the fix is in, but if it’s not, then the refs are being unduly partial to the home crowd, the ‘bigger name’ team/players or they’re are just not very good at their jobs. Honestly, tonight felt like the fix was in. The three no-calls in a row in the third followed by a marginal call the other way and the raps gave up. I’m continually amazed that refs don’t get punched in the face during games. I have to say that I’ve been happier than in a long time with reffing so far this season until this game.
Actually, according to the Mavs advanced stats guy, Wright’s best position last season was SF. He was a complete disaster when playing the two.

I'm noticing a pattern here...
Raptors play good Western teams (San Antonio, Dallas, Denver…) and they give up 130+
Bring on the Lakers with a healthy Pau Gasol or the Blazers!

POB
Anyone else notice just how bad he is. U’d think he’d make an effore out there so maybe he can get some minutes here and there but my goodnesssss he’s lackadaisical. There’s gotta be another young big out there we can invest this time and money into developing
Same thing as when we saw him up close in Vegas. I just don’t get it.
by RaptorsHQ - Franchise on Nov 17, 2009 11:27 PM EST up reply actions
I watched him up close during the last game of the season vs. Philly, and ‘soft’ is the perfect word to describe that guy. He’s just getting by on height.

Well...
Raps just don’t have the horses to hang with the Nuggets, especially minus Hedo and Evans.
Final score was misleading though, Toronto hung tight through 3 quarters but ran out of gas.
