Toronto Raptors at Memphis Grizzlies

October 30, 2009
Toronto, ON
TV: TSN2

After a big win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Toronto Raptors look to keep the wins going with a quick Western jaunt to Memphis.  No AI, no problem?  Let's hope.

Franchise, Howland and the rest of the HQ crew will be discussing things live during tonight's Game-Day Thread, and of course, the recap and extra goodies will follow tomorrow morning.

Nothing like kicking off the broadcast with some "Armstrong does Elvis"

Welcome to the show folks – looking forward to a 2 and 0 start here…

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Congratulations on another solar revolution!

Devlin shows some personality — I thought I was watching the wrong broadcast for a minute.

Before we get underway, Happy Birthday Howland as well!

Be easy on Howland, he’s not happy about turning 80 today…

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

You can always feel good watching Jack Armstrong though — dude is in his early 40s and he looks like he’s 60.

Were the fans more upset about losing to Detroit, or that Three-Six Mafia opened up the show?

Prediction

Call it D-Stance – Memphis or Raps win? I say Raps by 13.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:12 PM EDT reply actions

I think this shapes up to be an easy Raps win… Raps by at least a dozen.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Somebody needs to encourage the Memphis fans in attendance to move the f@#$ down. It looks like there’s a couple of hundred people there tops.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

Remember when the Hornets did that in one of their final years in Charlotte? Place was empty because everyone was boycotting Shinn.

Sloppy match so far – looks like pre-season all over again.

Raps are rocking the usual starting five.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m wondering if they should have started O’Bryant, Johnson, Wright, Belinelli and Jack…starters look terrible.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Grizz started Jenny Craig, err, Marc Gasol in the middle with Zach “Killa Crossover” Randolph, Rudy Gay, OJ Mayo and Mike Conley.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Bargnani

Looked a little hesitant on that one drive where he fumbled it out of bounds. He needs to take Gasol off the dribble and abuse him.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:22 PM EDT reply actions

That drive by Hedo is great to see – team really missed that last year.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

Love Carroll – one of those guys I would have liked to have seen Toronto go after late in the first round.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:25 PM EDT reply actions

A loss in this game would absolutely erase any of the good that came out of Wednesday’s victory over Cleveland.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:26 PM EDT reply actions

Totally agree – frustrating thing is that the shots aren’t falling from the perimeter, yet they keep jacking them up instead of trying to get to the rim. Far too similar to last year.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Raptors need to calm down here.

by Frag on Oct 30, 2009 8:28 PM EDT reply actions

Yep – and good timeout by Jay resulting in that Jose bucket.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Weird.

Offence is struggling and they sub everyone except for the PG.

Bosh Time

This is one of these times this year when CB4 is going to need to take over to keep his team in the game until they get things fixed on O and D.

Stepping it up here at the end of the quarter.

Mike Conley...

… with the sick bounce pass into the front row.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:34 PM EDT reply actions

1st quarter

OK, they go over 4 mins without a field goal and still only trail by one at the end of one. I can live with that.

this team is way more entertaining than last yr

by Member29 on Oct 30, 2009 8:37 PM EDT reply actions

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Mind if i sit in...?

I am a Spurs fan. While searching the ‘net I came across an article on the Raptors. It talked about Matt Bonner Day up there. I met Matt once and thought he was an upstanding young man.
The Spurs have a site like this also, Pounding the Rock. I enjoy following the comments. Do you mind if I follow along. I will probably ask some dumb questions, I don’t know all the players.

by LakehillsFan on Oct 30, 2009 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

Follow along by all means! I think some of us on the site are still bemoaning the loss of Roger Mason Jr!

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

roger jr is fitting in well. Pop is still playing with the lineups, never know who will play or for how long. How is your rookie looking?

by LakehillsFan on Oct 30, 2009 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

DeRozan looks like a solid pick so far. Good athleticism and gets to the line.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s been ok so far – he’s a real X factor this season because if he can have any sort of impact in the starting unit, it’s a huge boost because athletically, he can do things that few other Raptors can.

What happened to the Spurs last night against the Bulls?

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Welcome

Ask away — there’s no dumb questions… I was surprised the Spurs lost last night.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

kind of expected it. Back to back, young bulls, Pop playing with the lineups.
I think they were just out hustled?
Spurs usually start slow

by LakehillsFan on Oct 30, 2009 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Bosh is playing exactly like a max player should right now – taking over to keep his team in the game.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:41 PM EDT reply actions

Bosh with the ‘and 1’ right on cue.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

And the 3!!

Wright looks like Mo Pete’s twin out there – great D.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Turkoglu didn’t do much when he was on the Spurs. Nothing like last year. How is he looking to you?

by LakehillsFan on Oct 30, 2009 8:44 PM EDT reply actions

He’s been a nice addition compared to what was there last year…but I still can’t believe how much they paid for him. I can’t see much ROI when all is said and done.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly, a few of us here at the HQ are not fans of the Hedo signing. Contract is too long and too much money for a so-so player. But you hit a few game winners on national TV and people tend to overrate you.

That being said, I think he can be a solid contributor this season and maybe next.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

that was my take on him also, good addition, but not a barn-burner

by LakehillsFan on Oct 30, 2009 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Marcus Williams

It’s amazing the number of chemistry-killing underachievers on this Memphis squad. They might as well extend a minimum contract to Starbury and be done with it.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:46 PM EDT reply actions

It’s like Carleton – Last Chance U.

Raptors have scored 12 since I signed on???

by LakehillsFan on Oct 30, 2009 8:47 PM EDT reply actions

That’s going to be their style all year I think – streaky scoring.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Is Jack your point guard now?

by LakehillsFan on Oct 30, 2009 8:50 PM EDT reply actions

Calderon still starts but Jack is going to get a lot of minutes as well, at the 1 and the 2.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Jack is backing up starter Jose Calderon, which is nice because he’s starter quality… Last season, the drop off from Calderon to our backups (Roko Ukic and Will Solomon) was like driving off the edge of the Grand Canyon.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Bosh is an absolute contract-year beast so far. Haha.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:50 PM EDT reply actions

what happens when Bosh sits? He looks like the total offense

by LakehillsFan on Oct 30, 2009 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m scared for that…he’s been the only one stepping up besides Wright on D.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

You’d think that Bosh going off would free up some open looks from the perimeter. Hedo just hit one, but we’ll see if Belinelli and crew can get going as well.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

has bosh played the whole game?

by LakehillsFan on Oct 30, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Marcus Williams was the last cut that the spurs made. Good young player, but Spurs had too many at that position.
Rasho was a good Spur, how is he doing for you?

by LakehillsFan on Oct 30, 2009 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

I really like Marcus Williams – laptops or no laptops. Just think he needed to get out of Don Nelson’s madhouse.

Rasho though is a great fit coming back for TO. Just a true pro and someone who can come in and be very effective, even in limited minutes.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Marcus Williams

Is pretty crazy. Everywhere he’s gone its never been a question of talent, just of the fact that he’s apparently stubborn as hell.

53-49 Grizz at the half...

…lucky to be only down by 4 considering the way they played. Bosh needs a lot more help in the second half.

yea, he is playing great but cannot carry the load alone

by aagoodfella on Oct 30, 2009 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

things I noticed

Bosh has over half the points and half the rebounds.
Jack has 4 assists, somebody scores when he is in. He has only played 8 minutes and has a +7
Bargs has 3 turnovers and 3 fouls. He was the Man last game? Replace him with Rasho, they play the same positon, right

Randolph needs to be covered…smothered

by LakehillsFan on Oct 30, 2009 9:15 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed.

Jose’s having a tough night and so is Bargs – I think if they struggle again early, Triano should give them the yank and go with Jack and others.

Perspective

As excited as we were about the victory over a championship-caliber club like Cleveland on Wednesday, you have to remember that the expansion Raptors defeated the 72-win Chicago Bulls squad… If the Raptors are going to mail it in against teams like Memphis, it’s going to be a long season…

I just saw the second half, maybe Andrea somehow knew it…..

by renato on Oct 30, 2009 9:36 PM EDT reply actions

So...

A few points now that Toronto has grabbed the lead again.

1. This quarter is a perfect example of why Bargs is such a hotly contested player. On one hand, there’s not question, he’s a great offensive player. Last few plays back that up. However he’s killed this team all night at the other end, and that’s why he always ranks so low in terms of efficiency as an all-around player. I’m going to talk about this more tomorrow.

2. One thing this team does better this year already than last is recognize the hot hand. Bosh could have taken that last shot but swung the ball one more time to Andrea, who was on fire.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 9:38 PM EDT reply actions

There again – no way Bargs should have allowed that pass through the paint to Randolph – luckily Bosh thought he was Dwight Howard there.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Great points

You can score 20, but if you give back 20 or more you’re not really doing your team any good.

This season is all about showing those flashes.. Next season DeRozan puts a bit more together… 3rd year he probably explodes into a 20 ppg scorer (and I feel somewhat confident saying that because of his ability to attack the basket and get to the line).

9:10 p.m.: It’s early yet, and the severity of Carter’s injury is unclear. The commentators were right when they said the Magic’s depth will be tested. Let’s say Carter has to miss some games because of this . . . . Van Gundy could start Redick at shooting guard or could shift Mickael Pietrus to the 2 and start Barnes at the 3.

How do you do that dunk in a game? That’s just ridiculous!

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

It wasn’t ridiculous.. it was Gay!!! (sorry.. had to throw that last one in as I leave.)

by Ustation on Oct 30, 2009 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions

You already tried that sophomoric attempt at humour once before and failed.

Rasho may miss layups like it’s junior high, doesn’t mean we have to behave like that too.

JACK ARMSTRONG

Jack just called Bargnani a ‘Peasant’ in Italian…. ay ya yai…

by Jenge on Oct 30, 2009 10:01 PM EDT reply actions

At least he’s not referring to Bargs as ‘Fredo’…

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Bargs is in need of a new nick name ...

like Alfredo Sauce in stead of Hot Sauce

Dead ringer!

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Huge shot by Carroll

…after some good D by the Raps.

Damn, tie game.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 10:06 PM EDT reply actions

8-0 run by Memphis

Just when you thought the Raps were going to put away the Grizz… And Zach Randolph with one of the 12 blocks he’ll record this season.

Is Evans still out?

Yeah, he’s not playing. They could’ve really used him on Randolph tonight.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow

Bosh is just punishing the Grizz down low. Not settling at all.

However if you can’t rebound the ball…

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 10:09 PM EDT reply actions

Good D by the Raps on that sequence. Like having Wright in there.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 10:10 PM EDT reply actions

“Going with the veteran player on that Gay matchup…”

Yes, I’m 12 — I found that funny.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 10:11 PM EDT reply actions

This game will stand out in my mind for a long time in terms of “the new Bosh.” Relentless.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 10:11 PM EDT reply actions

Terrible play by Bargs – if you’re going to foul, FOUL. As a result, Carroll shooting 2.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 10:13 PM EDT reply actions

And then he fails to box out Gasol… seriously, I’d sub him out for Rasho at this point.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Did the replacement refs just put Carroll on the line? Because that was one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 10:13 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah but Bargs tapped him instead of making sure there was no mistake about when the foul was committed.

Right now, I’d like to see Jack in and Jose out.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

what happened? how did we get down by 4

by LakehillsFan on Oct 30, 2009 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

No help for Bosh, and some bad defence.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

While we wait for replay…Rondo apparently had 16 assists tonight in under 30.

Finishing the 4th quarter...

I’d like to see Rasho, Bosh, Hedo, Wright and Jack

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 10:17 PM EDT reply actions

Of course, we’ll be force-fed Bargnani, who is clearly struggling on the defensive end.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok...

…let’s see if the Raps can execute down the stretch here and not panic.

Not like that Jose…

It’s really difficult to watch a team lose a winnable game.

by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 10:20 PM EDT reply actions

I missed the NBA, but not games like this…wow – OJ Mayo with a terrible shot but one that drops.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Not enough the team can’t get a rebound.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry – meant, not enough time if the team can’t get a rebound.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s tough to say but this team already misses Evans big time.

by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s just insane to lose a game like this with the Raptors’ schedule in November. This was a game they had to have.

Time to break this one down for tomorrow morning…good chat tonight folks, we’ll do it again on Sunday.

Turkoglu -20 in 37 minutes, Calderon -15 in 34 minutes, Bargnani -14 in 35 minutes.

Calderon looks pretty rough this year and quite thin physically, not sure what’s going on with him.

Turkoglu’s bread and butter seems to be throwing up off-balance shots that he only gets off because of his height/length. I don’t think we signed him to go for 14/2/1 with 5 TOs against Memphis. Only 4.98 more seasons to go on that contract..

Harder for me to pick a bone with Bargnani except to say that Randolph and Gasol got the better of our two bigs, even with 37 and 12 from Bosh. More than 2 defensive boards would be nice though.

by bigweeze on Oct 30, 2009 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

When will they learn...

They’ve gotta play all teams with the same intensity. Win one and they think they’re the billups era pistons… Numerous bs calls didn’t help either. No excuse for the bad offense though.
