October 30, 2009

Nothing like kicking off the broadcast with some "Armstrong does Elvis"
Welcome to the show folks – looking forward to a 2 and 0 start here…

I think this shapes up to be an easy Raps win… Raps by at least a dozen.

Somebody needs to encourage the Memphis fans in attendance to move the f@#$ down. It looks like there’s a couple of hundred people there tops.

Looked a little hesitant on that one drive where he fumbled it out of bounds. He needs to take Gasol off the dribble and abuse him.

A loss in this game would absolutely erase any of the good that came out of Wednesday’s victory over Cleveland.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:26 PM EDT reply actions
Totally agree – frustrating thing is that the shots aren’t falling from the perimeter, yet they keep jacking them up instead of trying to get to the rim. Far too similar to last year.

Yep – and good timeout by Jay resulting in that Jose bucket.

Mind if i sit in...?
I am a Spurs fan. While searching the ‘net I came across an article on the Raptors. It talked about Matt Bonner Day up there. I met Matt once and thought he was an upstanding young man.
The Spurs have a site like this also, Pounding the Rock. I enjoy following the comments. Do you mind if I follow along. I will probably ask some dumb questions, I don’t know all the players.
Follow along by all means! I think some of us on the site are still bemoaning the loss of Roger Mason Jr!
by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions
roger jr is fitting in well. Pop is still playing with the lineups, never know who will play or for how long. How is your rookie looking?
by LakehillsFan on Oct 30, 2009 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions
DeRozan looks like a solid pick so far. Good athleticism and gets to the line.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions
He’s been ok so far – he’s a real X factor this season because if he can have any sort of impact in the starting unit, it’s a huge boost because athletically, he can do things that few other Raptors can.
What happened to the Spurs last night against the Bulls?

And the 3!!
Wright looks like Mo Pete’s twin out there – great D.
by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions
He’s been a nice addition compared to what was there last year…but I still can’t believe how much they paid for him. I can’t see much ROI when all is said and done.
by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Honestly, a few of us here at the HQ are not fans of the Hedo signing. Contract is too long and too much money for a so-so player. But you hit a few game winners on national TV and people tend to overrate you.
That being said, I think he can be a solid contributor this season and maybe next.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions
that was my take on him also, good addition, but not a barn-burner
by LakehillsFan on Oct 30, 2009 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Marcus Williams
It’s amazing the number of chemistry-killing underachievers on this Memphis squad. They might as well extend a minimum contract to Starbury and be done with it.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:46 PM EDT reply actions
That’s going to be their style all year I think – streaky scoring.
by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Calderon still starts but Jack is going to get a lot of minutes as well, at the 1 and the 2.
by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Jack is backing up starter Jose Calderon, which is nice because he’s starter quality… Last season, the drop off from Calderon to our backups (Roko Ukic and Will Solomon) was like driving off the edge of the Grand Canyon.

I’m scared for that…he’s been the only one stepping up besides Wright on D.
by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions
You’d think that Bosh going off would free up some open looks from the perimeter. Hedo just hit one, but we’ll see if Belinelli and crew can get going as well.
by RaptorsHQ - Defensive Stance on Oct 30, 2009 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Marcus Williams was the last cut that the spurs made. Good young player, but Spurs had too many at that position.
Rasho was a good Spur, how is he doing for you?
I really like Marcus Williams – laptops or no laptops. Just think he needed to get out of Don Nelson’s madhouse.
Rasho though is a great fit coming back for TO. Just a true pro and someone who can come in and be very effective, even in limited minutes.

53-49 Grizz at the half...
…lucky to be only down by 4 considering the way they played. Bosh needs a lot more help in the second half.
things I noticed
Bosh has over half the points and half the rebounds.
Jack has 4 assists, somebody scores when he is in. He has only played 8 minutes and has a +7
Bargs has 3 turnovers and 3 fouls. He was the Man last game? Replace him with Rasho, they play the same positon, right
Randolph needs to be covered…smothered
Agreed.
Jose’s having a tough night and so is Bargs – I think if they struggle again early, Triano should give them the yank and go with Jack and others.

Perspective
As excited as we were about the victory over a championship-caliber club like Cleveland on Wednesday, you have to remember that the expansion Raptors defeated the 72-win Chicago Bulls squad… If the Raptors are going to mail it in against teams like Memphis, it’s going to be a long season…

So...
A few points now that Toronto has grabbed the lead again.
1. This quarter is a perfect example of why Bargs is such a hotly contested player. On one hand, there’s not question, he’s a great offensive player. Last few plays back that up. However he’s killed this team all night at the other end, and that’s why he always ranks so low in terms of efficiency as an all-around player. I’m going to talk about this more tomorrow.
2. One thing this team does better this year already than last is recognize the hot hand. Bosh could have taken that last shot but swung the ball one more time to Andrea, who was on fire.
There again – no way Bargs should have allowed that pass through the paint to Randolph – luckily Bosh thought he was Dwight Howard there.
by Adam Francis on Oct 30, 2009 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

This season is all about showing those flashes.. Next season DeRozan puts a bit more together… 3rd year he probably explodes into a 20 ppg scorer (and I feel somewhat confident saying that because of his ability to attack the basket and get to the line).

Time to break this one down for tomorrow morning…good chat tonight folks, we’ll do it again on Sunday.
Turkoglu -20 in 37 minutes, Calderon -15 in 34 minutes, Bargnani -14 in 35 minutes.
Calderon looks pretty rough this year and quite thin physically, not sure what’s going on with him.
Turkoglu’s bread and butter seems to be throwing up off-balance shots that he only gets off because of his height/length. I don’t think we signed him to go for 14/2/1 with 5 TOs against Memphis. Only 4.98 more seasons to go on that contract..
Harder for me to pick a bone with Bargnani except to say that Randolph and Gasol got the better of our two bigs, even with 37 and 12 from Bosh. More than 2 defensive boards would be nice though.
When will they learn...
They’ve gotta play all teams with the same intensity. Win one and they think they’re the billups era pistons… Numerous bs calls didn’t help either. No excuse for the bad offense though.
