just wondering

I was wondering if there was any nba-calibre canadian talent in the ncaa. i hear that mutombo kid is pretty good. same with andrew nicholson (who i actually played with a few times at the YMCA in mississauga).

From what i know though, no one’s really turning heads. hoping you can answer my random passing thoughts.

In my guesstimation ...

To answer the question, I think there may be one or two but that would be the absolute best case scenario.

I saw Mutombo at the first National Team camp this summer and he can play. His second team all conference is evidence of that. Nicholson is also a guy I think has great upside after a great start to his college career. Those two are your leading contenders right now.

Other guys that have a shot down the road are Rob Sacre, Manny Arop and Bol Kong at Gonzaga, Junior Cadougan at Marquette depending on how he comes back from the achilles injury he suffered last month and maybe Andy Rautins.

I think mentioning all these guys is really hopeful thinking. You need to have a lot of intangible qualities to make the NBA and though some of these guys can really play, if any of them got a camp invite that may be the closest they may come.

The one guy I left off because he’s not in the NCAA yet is DJ Wright at Mount Saint Jacinto JUCO in Cali. He can really play and he looks like he has an NBA body already. He is pegged by some JUCO scouts as the best player on the circuit now and is a possible NBA player now.

But who knows. Only time will tell and I hope they can all prove me wrong.

Tristan Thompson

what abt tristan thompson? no one really seems to talk abt him as an nba-level talent.
But the fact that he was rated in the top 3 for this year’s high school class by almost every website just confuses me. If a player is so highly touted, doesn’t it mean he has what it takes to make it to the nba?

If you want to talk about HS guys ...

I’m always leary about saying guys have NBA potential when they’re still in HS. Thompson has some game for sure. I remember seing him play in a game at the ACC against Eastern Commerce a few years back before he was THE Tristan Thompson and he was head and shoulders above lots of these the guys playing and there were four cats now in D1. I don’t want to say he’s NBA potential now because the fact is he hasn’t played against college level talent yet regularly. The level he’s playing at is high but there’s no telling how he plays against guys who are at his level skill wise and physically on a regular basis. Just think of other HS guys from the past like Thompson that went to the NBA and didn’t stick. I saw a guy regularly at the downtown Y in Toronto named Sani Ibrahim who went to Oak Hill Academy. He was a top 10 HS guy the year Ty Chandler got drafted. They tabbed him with NBA game and he wasn’t drafted.

There are some other Canadian guys that are highly rated in HS like Cory Joseph, Dwight Powell and Mo Walker for the coming year. Thompson has the best chance at this point than them for the League but we’ll see. Like I said last post, I hope he can prove me wrong.

Mutombo and Sheppard

Mutombo was at the first phase of the training camp for the senior men. After that I don’t think he was was back for the remainder of the two.

Sheppard was on the Senior team when they went Italy. In fact, if you check the clips from the fight, you can see Shep in the frames coming to Doornekamp’s aid after the hit.

Both were obviously not on the final Senior roster. I think the idea was to get the young guys in the camp to get them used to the structure of the camp, the work outs and see what it was like. Both Gherardini and Rautins stressed that it was important to get the young guys that have potential to play for the team in the future in the program early and I think that’s what they were trying to do with these two guys.
