Salmons Backs Out

All of the excitement about John Salmons coming to Toronto voluntarily and it being a reflection of the drastic change in perception of the Raptors is for not. Salmons has apparently had a change of heart and decided that the 5 year $23 million dollar deal was not in his best interests. Why? What spurred this on? We may never know the reason but we do know that the Raps now have a roster spot for a backcourt player.

Eddie House?

Fred Jones?

Roko Ukic?

A trade?

Colangelo has some work to do now as Salmons was a multi-dimensional player and the Raps are now left scouring a weak free agent market. We will be breaking down some options in the next day or so.

Don't you love people who cannot commit. Great job John Salmons. Bravo!! Get lost! I was looking forward to having him here, I believe he would of helped us and himself. He has tarnished his reputation now. We have had our share of non-team players, and John S. now falls in that catagory.

My guess is that this will cause Mo Pete to be traded sooner rather than later - he is our best bargaining chip. As for Salmons, he won't get anywhere near that money on the market this year. I assume he'll sign a 1 year deal and wait until next year.

Wow. I don't believe this, NOT a big Salmons fan. Wasn't sure about what his role would be? Is this guy insecure about his game or somthing, we were offering him money and security and he had an oppertunity to be a big contributor on this team. But we can't have players on the team who aren't 100% committed to being here so if he was having serious doubts then it's a good thing he pulled out.

Crap.

Let's see what BC can do now that the summer has become unsettled.

Really, at least this gives us something to think about and ponder for the next while (until something brilliant hopefully comes along and makes Salmons took like a sardine of a deal).

Salmons is right to worry about playing time in Toronto. He'd have to beat out Jose at point and Joey at 2/3 for minutes and there is no guarantee he'll play any better than than the incumbants. But his agent has got to be concerned! Who is left - who has both the need and the cap space to get John a better deal?

jay williams should be a option also

I'm saying bring Ukic over. Get Ford, Calderon (and even Mo Pete and Anthony Parker to some extent) to cover the guard area, and that'd give the Raptors the flexability needed to work Roko into the rotation. I mean, T.J. is going to be their main 1, Calderon will of course be their second option at the PG. If they bring Roko over, you can spread Ukic's and Calderon's minutes around at the 1 and 2 positions without sacrificing too much. If neither of them produce at those spots, use them only sparingly at the 1, and have Parker/Peterson pick up the slack at the 2. Maybe I'm missing something here, but with the (hopefully) lower cost of Ukic than Salmons, I can't see this as being too much of a downgrade from Salmons, especially seeing as how he's not even IN the picture anymore. But hey, maybe Colangelo will get House, or Jones, or, as terrible as it would be, A.I., and my whole theory is debunked. Still nice to think about...

good for the raptors . i am not completely sold out to the salmons deal.
maybe colangelo will go for a tough guy like evans if he's still available.
what about giving keon clark a call .

I'm really puzzled about the lack of interest in Fred Jones, unless he's already made a commitment to go back to Indy or something. But I haven't heard a peep about him. He's not quite as versatile a player as Salmons, but he's an exceptional athlete who would probably excel in the Raptors' promised uptempo offence.

I don't know what Salmons was thinking. Possibly he thought that his minutes would be squeezed with the Parker signing, but where's he going to go now? Phoenix just signed Banks. Philly doesn't seem interested in bringing him back. And I really doubt that this is all part of some ingenious Colangelo conspiracy, although I'm sure he's reweighing his options.

Pierce recently stated he'd like the C's to get Mo Pete...would the raps have any interest in a guy like Allen or Rondo?

Who would you like to see in a trade with Boston (aside from Jefferson, Perk, Paul and Green....who is only good against Toronto)?

Look this is the word around town .....A trade is on the horizion

To Raps: Ray Allen

To Sonics:
Joey G
Roko
Alvin Williams
2 second Round Picks

* 2 million dollar trade exception could be used to

by Kevin on Jul 22, 2006 11:24 PM EDT reply actions

wow that would be somthing else, Ray Allen? He's a player we could get real excited about. Everyone knows he has a wicked shot but the man's pretty efficient at taking it too the hole too. Upon first hearing that, sounds like an ideal situation, even though I want to see Joey do well in a Raptors uniform. As long as Mo Pete isnt traded I'm down for anything.

Toronto newspapers are reporting Raps are close to signing Fred Jones. He's put up better numbers than Salmons and brings that dunk/slashing that the Raptors need. So he's a better fit and he'll be getting less money. Where did you hear the Ray Allen rumour? If the Raps make that signing could that still possibly happen?

by Blaker on Jul 23, 2006 9:11 AM EDT reply actions

The Star is reporting today that the Raps are close to signing Fred Jones, choosing him over other potential FAs like Eddie House.

Other than Salmons' ability to back up at the point, Jones is as good a fit as Salmons would have been here, and should be more exciting to watch and perhaps a better fit in the Raps' projected up-tempo style, so sounds good to me! I'm still happy I bought season tickets this week. :)

Come on. The Sonics aren't trading Ray Allen for a bag of pucks. Heck, we even got a couple of first round picks in the Vince Carter trade.

Here's something more realistic - today's Star is reporting that the Raptors will sign Indiana's Fred Jones in the next couple of days. Jones is a restricted free agent, but it doesn't seem like Indy is all that revved up to resign him. Plus, if they do end up signing Al Harrington for a whack of cash, they probably won't be able to match the Raps' offer.

I wonder if Doug Smith of the Star or even Colangelo has been reading our posts? Well, the squeaky wheel gets the grease, I suppose.

by Skywalker on Jul 23, 2006 10:37 AM EDT reply actions

The Sun is also reporting the Fred Jones signing, so I guess this is a legit story.

by Skywalker on Jul 23, 2006 10:46 AM EDT reply actions

Fred jones is a good choice for the raps... gives us a nice atheletic 2 gaurd who has the potential to start and can possibly put up around 15 a game... he should be able to compliment our team very well! good recorvery by bryan colangeo only thing to worry about is that fred jones is a restrcited free agent and possibly could stay in indiana if the offer is matched but... they just got al harrington and marquis daniels plus there rookie shawne wiliams so it looks bright that he will be in a raps uniform

by Kevin on Jul 23, 2006 11:07 AM EDT reply actions

As much as i would LOVE to see Fred Jones in a Raps Uni in 06-07, i am VERY uncomfortable now that only Jose & T.J are playing the point for us!!! But hey maybe if Jones can try and play the point this could be the advantage. He would be like a Mike James kind of point though but he's a back ups back up for PG so I guess this is another solid pickup by BC. It takes pressure off Anthony Parker and whoever else is playing the SG.

by Gib on Jul 23, 2006 12:04 PM EDT reply actions

The other thing I like about the deal as reported is the length. In three seasons we will have something like 18-20 million come off the books. Rasho/Jones/Parker/Garbajosa/Graham contracts all end at the same time Bosh and every other big ticket free agent of his class are on the market. Summer of '09 could be very interesting.
