I like it, we get Rasho and cash for a couple players who weren't going to get too many minutes next year anyway. Rasho is a big body to throw in the middle on defense and remember how good KG made him look? I think BC is thinking Bosh will do the same. RC Buford got fleeced, Spurs can't use EWill, maybe Bonner (a slower Brent Barry who can't dribble or play defe....ummm, a slower Brent Barry). Unfortunately, that 2009 draft pick will probably end up being an international player no one's ever heard of and by 2011 he'll be a superstar...*sigh*

Yea not crazy about the draft pick, and part of me will miss bonner. He's going to be pissed that he has to move.Do you know how much moving can cost?

Hope San Antonio has public transit.

Were down almost 2 million I think and he is signed thre 08'09 were by that time his contract is in the 7 millions...I definaly don't think he deserves that muhc unless he averages 10 8 and 1.5 this season. I don't think we shoulda gave up Bonner to. Just Eric Williams and maybe 2 2nd rounders.

Good trade!

Got a Center that is serviceable for 2 players that were not. Bonner won't get more than 10 minutes per game for the Spurs, and Eric Williams won't see the floor.

Nesterovic is an upgrade at the 5 position and we didn't have to give up anything signficant to get him. I'm not saying he's great, but he is average, and more importantly, he's better than anything we had last year at that position.

Sam Mitchell must be devastated...he'll have to satisfy his man-crush on Bonner by watching Spurs games on Satellite.

Hmmm... hoopshype does not have the player option, whereas Patricia's site does. $8.4MM is going to be fairly large (although not horrendous for a centre), but I bet Rasho has some great years here. When the contract is up, he'll be 33 and he'll be a cap clear at a time we may need it... (or trade fodder after his 2nd year).

Seems like a nice addition to me... but time will tell.

Whaley was waived... wonder if more moves are coming.

i like the move. Gives us a center who can play meaningful minutes and give bosh some room to operate. I can actaully see rasho prospering pretty well here getting good garbage points, and pretty decent rebound numbers

by scott on Jun 21, 2006 11:04 PM EDT reply actions

I'll vote good trade: Nesterovic can be productve when starting and given the minutes. And at worse he'll be one of the better backup Cs we've had in a long time if ever. Bonner is shaping into an underrated player but I can't see him getting much better than he is now, and I 've read Colangelo is optimistic about Graham improving into a consistent contributor so he was likely poised to eat Bonner's minutes anyhow. And the purging of the Williamses continues. Sorry Alvin, you next! But seriously Alvin, get well man. I'd hate to see his career end but I wouldn't mind if it ended elsewhere if it netted us something decent.

Fantasy GM this is our contract situation next season.

Here are the contracts we are paying next season.

Radoslav Nesterovic - $7,280,000
Alvin Williams - $6,800,000
Morris Peterson - $4,550,000
Alonzo Mourning - $4,000,000
Mike James - $3,720,000
Chris Bosh - $4,235,220
Charlie Villanueva - $2,537,880
Jose Manuel Calderon - $2,300,000
Kris Humphries - $1,703,520
Joey Graham - $1,492,440
Robert Whaley - $664,209

Mike James and Alvin Williams both have the option to opt out this summer. I doubt Alvin will becasue no other team will probalby pay for him but Mike James probably will but for now he is under contract with us. We are also paying the contracts of Alonzo Mourning and Rober Whaley....Now a days after BC is done rebuilding the team I am sure ZO would of wanted to be on our team. He woulda been the starting center for us and we are bound to be a playoff team. Also on another not I think Rasho is way overpaid. Bosh doesn't even make that much.

Take aways Whaley's contract and Alonzo's we still have 6 roster spaces + the Colorado 14'ers roster spots.

Radoslav Nesterovic - $7,280,000
Alvin Williams - $6,800,000
Morris Peterson - $4,550,000
Mike James - $3,720,000
Chris Bosh - $4,235,220
Charlie Villanueva - $2,537,880
Jose Manuel Calderon - $2,300,000
Kris Humphries - $1,703,520
Joey Graham - $1,492,440

everyone pretty much knows that Mike James is going to probably opt out this season and if Alvin isn't traded he will probalby be sent down to Colorado. That will leave us with 8 roster spots. We sign our fist overall pick so that will leave us with 7 soter spots so BC still has alot to do this summer.

Needless to say so far next season we are paying $39,283,269 so that will leave us with around 11 million in cap room and if we sign all our free agents and our 1st overall pick we should be able to sign our second rounders if we want to even if were over the cap. We could also make some pretty good trades with close salary's even if we are getting a bigger contract do to the 25% rule I think it is now. Well this summer is going to be pretty fun I know that much.

colangelo is indeed a miracle worker. havin nesto in the raptors fold is a coup.
the move shd. at least give us a truly capable center .
does this mean that andrea b. is out of the picture ? i don't think so. he's part italian . b.c. loves opera . he loves andrea b. andrea borcelli !

Another piece of the puzzle!

Great trade. Rasho will make BC look like even more of a genius when his stats rise significantly playing against the weak center's in the East and he puts up career numbers.... Addition by subtraction by losing E. Williams.

And it looks like Bargnani is a lock to be playing for the raps next year with the hiring of Gherardini now being official.

I was never on the bonner bandwagon, but I hope he puts up big numbers knocking down wide open shots with dishes from Duncan, Manu & Parker.

What's next!

by Rookie GM on Jun 22, 2006 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

Excellent trade.

A serviceable centre, with decent knees (the curse of Hakeem may finally be shed) for pretty much nothing in return. Bonner was a great team guy but not going to be a big-time player on a decent team. Williams ... just glad he's outta here. Who cares about the '09 second rounder! We've got another one left for that year in case people are really worried.

I like how BC is working it at all angles. Keep it going!

by Dave on Jun 22, 2006 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

good move because we lose no money. eric willams stood to make 4.3 million and bonner stood to make 2 million. that 6.3 million plus rahos salary is 7.3 plus we got cash from san antonia (probable 1 million) therefore 7.3 = 7.3 and we get a legitimate centre for practically nothing. (how many guys on our team can hit open threes like bonner.. no big loss)

by shawn on Jun 22, 2006 10:31 PM EDT reply actions

I am very sad to lose Bonner as this was going to be the year he learned to dribble the ball below his waist.

"Now a days after BC is done rebuilding the team I am sure ZO would of wanted to be on our team. He woulda been the starting center for us and we are bound to be a playoff team."

Hey Lil Scrappy, let's recap, Zo is taking 4 million a year from the Raps and gets to win a championship with Miami. I don't think he's really wishing that he had stayed here to be a starter on a team that could make the playoffs next season.

Splitter or Fernandez to Toronto as free agents this summer?

by Ian on Jun 23, 2006 10:21 PM EDT reply actions

Not a bad trade for the Spurs either. They dump a guy who they weren't playing anyway and get some cap room after next season.

Nesterovic is ok, and better than what the Raps had at the centre position, but it's not like he's the second coming. On the other hand, it's not like the Raps gave up a whole bunch for him, and Rasho doesn't make a ridiculous amount of $, so it should work out for the Raps.

This move also means that Aldridge will not be a Raptor.

by Skywalker on Jun 24, 2006 11:06 AM EDT reply actions

I wouldn't bet on Aldridge not being a raptor... this move totally gives Colangelo the flexibility to draft him and let him fill out before he becomes the team's starting centre. Ditto for Bargnani although he's more of a 3/4 anyway. As for whether or not Rasho's contract is too big, it's a fact of life that an average to above average nba centre is going to make at least 7-10 mm b/c they're in such short supply.

As for what we lost, good riddance to williams. Bonner is a great role player but easily replaceable. The 2nd rounder is pretty much meaningless.
