This is awesome. Word to Big Bird!

Aldridge? he is the type of big we need.
Thomas? Unlimited upside.
Bargani? Dirk-like.
Gay? Scottie Pippen 2.

My pick goes to Gay simply because he would be a great fit with Charlie, Sam would know how to motivate him and he would be our first explosive player since VC.

I also would not mind swaping 1st rounders with Seattle for Ridnour and then drafting O'bryant.

Hell Yeah!!!.... damn we should have hired Colangelo a long time ago, first he get's bosh to commit and then he get's the number one pick... This would be the best freaking news ever if the draft class was a little stronger.

Yea, imagine we had greg oden coming here. Nonetheless, this is great news. This creates such a buzz around the raptors, and gives a perception of momentum that will be contageous. Free agents and trade prospects won't avoid us like lepers. Not to mention all the extra articles about the Raptors that will be written from now until tip-off... I doubt I'll actually have to do any work for the rest of the week. Maybe even a nationally televised game here in the US. It's going to be a great off-season. Long live Colangelo.

as a fellow Raps fan I gotta say.. TRADE THE PICK! We need a veteran PG or big man... use the top pick to get a PG or big and a pick lower in the first round.

One deal that immediately pops into mind would have the top pick heading to Seattle for Luke Ridnour and their 10th pick. This deal would allow the Raps to add another young player while gaining the floor general that they desperately need.

take aldridge unless colangelo believes bargnani is the best player in the draft, and considering our new assistant Gm knows andrea better than anyone, we should have an accurate view on which of the two is best come draft day.

Its great for T.O. the good to finally get some good news. It will work out no matter what, but a trade for j. o neal would be great an experineced player to win now and take pressure off of Bosh. I also like Gay, but that will taketime.....and $$$ down the road.

The Sonics are not going to give up Ridnour, he's far too good and works well in their system.

I also say trade the pick, but I'm not really sure if you're going to be able to get much for it in such a crappy draft. Why can't the Raps ever get a REAL break? #1 is exactly the same as #5 in this draft, so you'll have to look to trade down pretty far (#10-15) to find someone who might think it's worth getting the first overall . . .

Incidentally, without thinking about this for even a second (so don't scold me if there's and easy answer) when was the last time someone traded the #1 overall pick in an NBA draft???

by Aaron on May 24, 2006 8:54 AM EDT reply actions

Aaron, I am not sure about this, but I am thinking that the clippers traded the #1 pick a few years ago for elton brand. That pick turned out to be either eddy curry, or tyson chandler. Then again, they might ahve traded the 2 or 3rd pick too. I am unsure

by scott on May 24, 2006 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

Chandler was the two pick by the Clips that year behind KWAME. He was then dealt for Brand.

Raps have to trade this pick - they need veterans not more rookies, even though some of those rookies are nice fits (Aldridge especially). I think they could get more than Ridnour + Seattle's pick too. Ridnour is a good PG but he can't defend at all which is something the Raps sorely lack. I would prefer either:

1) Trade down to #2 and pick up Duhon from the Bulls (Raps may have to throw in something else to make this work.

2) Trade down to #4 and pick up either Steve Blake or Jarret Jack from the Blazers. This makes a lot of sense since Portland is logjammed at PG.

3) If you trade for Ridnour, they should try to get Danny Fortson or Nick Collison thrown in as well to provide the raps with some much needed interior toughness.

4) As a more off-the-wall suggestion, trade the pick to the Knicks for Channing Frye and David Lee. This doesn't bring in veteran help but they're both good young players and Isiah Thomas is crazy enough that he might bite on this.

Draft Aldridge or trade down draft reddick and pick up an interior presence.

Winning the number 1 pick is awesome! It opens up so many doors and has teams and free agents looking at Toronto with a more positive feel. My first thought is that they should trade the pick.

I've heard the possibility of getting J. O'neal or P. Gasol which in my mind would be ideal for Toronto. Another big name bigman possibility was K. Garnett. Now Ive only heard this from one source but there is possibilty here. Garnett will get traded because Minnisotta's not getting anywhere so they are either trading for more All-star guys to support KG or trade KG himself. It's a long shot. I've also heard Collangelo is not highly interested in trading Charlie V. so if they would need trade bait for any of these big men, maybe put MoPete in the trade.

If you haven't caught on yet, I seem to be looking at big guys and not PG's. I've just recently heard that Jay Williams, former Chicago PG who had a motorcycle accident, may be ready to make his return this year and Toronto is one of the cities that have worked with him and he has said that he wouldn't mind playing for T.O. I think they should go after Williams as thier point guard in order to save them from trading thier pick.

My last opinion for now is that Ben Wallace may be available next and if they can get enough cap room and find a way attract Ben to coming here, he'd be a huge boost to the team's roster.
